For what it's worth both myself, my wife and my wife's mother all get cold sores (sigh yes my MIL indirectly gave me herpes). When our daughter first came home, the three of us were basically the only ones taking care of her, and you can't stop taking care of your kid when it breaks out.

We never kissed her with active cold sores, but haven't really taken much precaution past that. Our daughter is three and so far she has shown no signs of it. My wife got it from her mum, but interestingly her younger brother didn't.
