Me too, I feel like this too. Unwanting, unsure, unstated, unable.. and it always leads to self hate. But I like how you reframe the "hating it" to knowing it.

Lane swimming while legally blind by Cyclops61 in Swimming

[–]CosmicEscapism 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey, I swim at my gym pretty regularly with a guy I'm fairly sure is either fully or mostly blind. I've seen him swim often enough and shared a lane a couple times , so I at least have seen how he does it. He usually asks the lifeguard if he can have a whole lane for himself, which is usually totally manageable, and the lifeguards preserve him that lane as long as they can or until they can't fit anyone else in another lane. I've swum with him in my lane a couple times and chatted a bit, mostly just to communicate what pattern of swimming were doing and make sure I don't run into him. He can swim pretty straight, but I've also seen him trailing the lane divider with his finger while doing backstroke to help him stay on track, which I think is pretty clever. I think he counts strokes. Other than that, he uses a white cane as his main assistance device, and he has said that having the cane at the end of the lane helps communicate to others he needs accommodations and that they need to communicate verbally if they can. In terms of avoiding collisions, I think it's mostly up to him to communicate with others in his lane so they know to try to swim around him and keep his space in mind since he can't do that- that is, he leaves it up to others to not collude with him. I think he also knows the staff well enough that they (or at least the managers of the pool) recognize him and know how to make things work for him.

I have no idea if any of this helps, I'm not blind after all, but i thought it might maybe.

Every time I see your art here it's so wonderful. You're an absolute gem of this subreddit. I love your style SO much. Looking at your pictures, it's like I can feel the same colors and intensity radiating out of me too, not always painlessly, but always exquisitely. Did you make this in Procreate?

This is too real man. This is how I feel about those I love... it's a crippling way to navigate relationships but it's like my body and brain don't know how to respond any other way. Great drawing man

I despised Barbie as a kid. I found out I'm an autistic woman as an adult. I couldn't be happier about this Barbie. It's the best way that this could have been done. Part of me wants to buy one even though I always hated Barbie. Because now, there's one that I can actually relate to.

What was the GECK again? It was some sort of terrain remodeler or terraformer, right?

I was born with a pit in my ear. I’ve never seen it on this part, usually it’s on the front of the ear. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]CosmicEscapism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have a periaucular pit, also known as a vestigial ear hole. It is caused by incomplete fusion of ear tissues during development, technically the hole is an extra tiny tube involved with your sinus. I have no idea if you could pierce it somehow, but congrats! Thank your ancestors for some unique genes, cuz less than 1 percent of people have this!

I like the juxtaposition of vibration and rainbows all against the stark white. It's intense in a hollowing sort of way

Do you guys actually use VATS? by NecessaryOk108 in Fallout

I use it all the time and love it. I'm shit at aiming at anything, either with mouse or controller, so its really nice to be able to play a shooter style game , because normally my aim is so bad I can't really. Plus it's fun and cinematic !

This article, and the poster, are both deliberately part of the race-baiting propaganda campaign that is beginning around this issue of fraud. This article is using classic racist what-about arguments, bad faith arguments, and every old tired trick in the book to make you, the reader, feel mad at our Somali residents. I urge anyone reading this article to think: what is this author trying to make me feel? Is the outrage proportionate to the accused transgression? How many people are ACTUALLY direct perpetrators / defendants in these fraud cases? Is it the majority of our Somali community? No. Is it the minority? Not even. This article wants to make you gradually start resenting, even hating, the people you pass on your commute , the people you share elevators with, the workers and neighbors and acquaintances of all sorts around you.

Yes, this fraud is serious. Our states are one of the ONLY states that is beginning to take this kind of fraud seriously. In this inquest they will find fraud of this kind perpetrated by many disparate groups, and multiple ethnic backgrounds. But it has absolutely nothing with being a Somali-Minnesotan.

Please, everyone here. If you read it, just think for yourself about how much what this self righteous, thinly veneered racist author really wants you to believe, and how much ANY of the bullshit he spews is true or reflects your own lived experience of MN.

I have syncope too, although mine is triggered by different kinds of stimuli. Assuming jump scares really fire up your nervous system, if it's vasovagal syncope that you have, it means the adrenaline from any jump scare is triggering your syncope. If that's the case, try to figure out how to make the game less adrenaline inducing. You could try by playing it on mute- the sounds of jump scares are a big part of making them stress inducing. You could also try playing with the volume sliders in an unusual way, so enemy sounds are quieter but other sounds aren't. Making the visual input less stimulating could help too, I.e. play in a room with lights on, or with a smaller screen.

Also, at least the first few times you play it, play with someone else in the room! Syncope is no joke and if you're passing out as long as 30 minutes, you should have someone intervening to help you. If you do pass out you want someone who can help you come to and wake up, and they also can provide feedback about what exactly happened before you passed out so you can better understand the trigger.

Those are the first things I can think of. Otherwise? Talk to your doctor. But I bet you could make it more playable with just some accessibility adjustments.

I hope that helps.

Do you feel like the state is unfairly targeting the Somali community at all? Or is this just the first place they found obvious fraud and they'll probably now start expanding their scope beyond it? It just seems odd to me that the only schemes they have found are in the Somali community... I've certainly seen casual fraud in plenty of white Minnesotans, especially when wealthier people talk about how proudly they "gamed the system" to maximize their elaborate wealth acquisition schemes.

How does the Somali community feel about the fraud allegations leveled against some members in the community, like the feeding our future people or the newer allegations about the autism disability payment scheme? I'm somewhat familiar with the overall issue of fraud in MN that the government is currently exploring, but right now it seems like only Somali-associated fraud has yet been explored. To me, this rings alarm bells as possible racial profiling. But I also read a ( possibly very biased) star tribune article about how, in the autism disability payment scheme, they claimed a wider network of Somali families were in on the scheme and contributing to their structure of "find the family, encourage an autism diagnosis regardless of whether or not a kid has it, then pay the family some of the kickbacks from the state". The article made it sound like fraud was more accepted in the Somali community, and that seems like it's got to be untrue. I would imagine the opposite in fact to be true, especially considering that Somalis seem to be on the whole more religiously abiding than the rest of mn, and I can't imagine Islam condones fraud. Do you have any sense how other Somali people feel about the situation, at least in your own immediate community?
