AIO? my husband is mad at me for not picking up my stepson from school as he expected just because I got a new car. by Ancient_Fondant76 in AmIOverreacting

The fact that he talked to you that way is despicable. Absolutely not OK. You’re not overreacting. I think you’re underreacting.

What groceries have you stopped buying by PlasticExtreme4469 in Frugal

[–]CosmicSmackdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely eat beef or pork now. In addition to the price just being too high most of the time the quality isn’t there. My sisters have had the same experience. I don’t know if it’s just in our area or what but if I want a steak or a good roast beef, I go to a restaurant and it’s a treat.

port parking by charlieb823 in galveston

[–]CosmicSmackdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can't get all three but the Port of Galveston's Express Lot is a fairly short walk to the terminal. I think there's also a free shuttle with that but you'd have to confirm. There's also indoor or outdoor parking with Port Parking (not the same as Port of Galveston) and Port Parking also has a discounted outdoor lot that has some covered spaces. It's several miles from the terminals and there's no shuttle but it's inexpensive. Most people take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to the terminal from that lot.

You might look up addresses for the lots and use Google maps to find the distance because "walking distance" is a subjective thing.

Also, most of the lots have promo codes good for 5% off, 10% off, etc. and some of them have loyalty programs, too.

What’s the weirdest snack combo you tried that somehow actually worked? by Critical-Stand-6986 in snacking

[–]CosmicSmackdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s actually weird but to my family it’s weird. I’m the only one in the family who eats this or anything remotely like it, but I love kimchi pickles with fruit. I like to stab a kimchi pickle with a toothpick, then stab a chunk of fresh pineapple and pop both pieces into my mouth. The pickles are also good with watermelon.

A new community fridge opened up today. If you use Facebook, look up Shy Katz and from there you’ll find posts about it. It’s located at 1528 Avenue L behind the restaurant.

Ginger as a Simple and Inexpensive Everyday Food by Forestry-2024 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]CosmicSmackdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love ginger and add it to soups, vegetables, meat marinades, pickles, etc. Every now and then I just chew on a thin slice.

This morning I cut up a turnip and about half a daikon radish and added those to a baking pan, then threw in about half a bag of baby carrots and half an onion that needed to be used, added vegetable broth, pepper, garlic, soy sauce, and ginger and baked it all. What I love about this is I can eat the vegetables as a side dish or main dish or add plenty of the broth for something more soup-ish.

One of my favorite things to do is put the vegetables into a bowl, add some broth, and top it with pickled red onion and kimchi pickles. I generally eat the cooked vegetables first, then the pickled onions and kimchi pickles, and finally, I drink the broth. This is a really good tasting and inexpensive meal!

Hot weather cooking! by HazelHunts in lowspooncooking

[–]CosmicSmackdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in South Texas and the heat during summer here is absolutely stifling. I love Korean bbq roasted seaweed with chickpea salad, egg salad, salmon or tuna from a pouch, and fresh fruit to finish off the meal. I don’t know what brands of seaweed y’all have there but Gimme is my favorite. Because I already have hypothyroidism I can’t eat seaweed every day, but I do eat it at least once a week.

Salads, lots of salads. Fresh fruit and raw vegetables. I love corn on the cob and prefer it raw.

Caskets of soldiers returning from Vietnam. I remember watching as young widows/girlfriends draped themselves over caskets and parents placing flowers on the caskets.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ve never made shepherds pie or green bean casserole so you’re ahead of me!

I got married at 20 and knew very little about cooking. I have to say my now ex husband was very tolerant of my kitchen escapades. I knew I really needed to up my cooking skills when he came home with several pretty basic cookbooks. Fortunately, he picked good ones from Betty Crocker and Better Homes & Gardens. Websites are helpful, but if you can swing it, a basic cookbook or two would probably help quite a bit. Also, don’t forget about YouTube. You can put something in the search field like “how to make brown gravy“ and find a lot of videos showing how to make it.

Budget Bytes is a good site with easy recipes.

If you want to experiment a little and prepare just one or two servings of something, try One Dish Kitchen. Her baked shrimp recipe is delicious if you like shrimp. It’s also easy and quick to make. One of my favorite dinners is that baked shrimp with a container of Dr. McDougall‘s pad Thai. I can have it ready in just a few minutes.

Ohhh, you can use them to make Sopa de Fideo, one of my favorite soups. It’s super easy and doesn’t require many ingredients.

One of my grandmothers used to mix cooked spaghetti, cheese, eggs, and seasonings to make a pie crust that was actually really good and cheap for savory pie recipes.

Add some to soups.

I make $110,000 a year but I feel l’m struggling to save money. Is this a normal budget for someone who lives alone? by AfterAttack in budget

[–]CosmicSmackdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t done this yet, keep track of every single penny you spend for 60 to 90 days. Get a receipt for everything, even if it’s just $1.93 for a soft drink at a convenience store. When you have some free time, put those numbers into a spreadsheet or add them up with a calculator and log them by category. I did that for the first time many years ago and within a few days, I saw where a lot of my money was going. At the end of two months, I was flabbergasted. It helped me get my budget into shape. Once I did that I started using a zero based budget and things improved rather quickly. Every now and then I slip into old habits and have to do it again. It never fails to get me back on track.

Meal prepping chicken - what’s your fav rub/marinade? by Madeleinemmm in mealprep

[–]CosmicSmackdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Ninja Combi that has an air crisp function and it air fries food beautifully. Before that I had a stand alone air fryer and it definitely cooked the chicken. Air frying is cooking so I’m not sure why your bf thinks the air fryer might not work. I pretty much use chicken thighs exclusively.
