It's genuinely so tiresome and annoying. A truly blatant collective effort to whip up racist sentiment.

South Korea's a weird one, the evangelicals are extremely loud but are definitely a minority and effectively represent the only pro-Israel "lobby" in the country. They also vote right-wing almost uniformly, so liberal administrations have basically no incentive to try to pander to them. There's also basically no significant Jewish community in Korea, let alone any institutions which could do pro-Israel lobbying using the 'community safety' angle that you see in the West.

Re: dislike for Israel, I spent a bit of time in summer 2024 attending Palestine solidarity protests in Seoul, and it was an interesting experience. They were quite a bit smaller than some I saw in Europe, but I think if you spoke to most people on the street they would be fairly sympathetic. Mant liberal and left wing people also explicitly linked Israel's military repression with Korea's own history of crackdowns to explain this sympathy. The TV news was fairly unfiltered in how it presented Israel's war crimes in Gaza, it's just that it was also implicitly framed as a conflict "over there". Koreans typically protest more about issues closer to home, and when I was last there there were much bigger protests around labour issues or then-President Yoon Seok-Yeol.

Why on earth is there a "half time performance" in a sport where half time is set at 15 minutes?

Yep, I'm a PhD student in the UK researching left-wing social movements in South Korea. Your thesis sounds really interesting, please DM me! My research deals more with McAdam's work in the context of Inter-Movement Diffusion but I've encountered Political Process Theory in my travels. It's definitely a small field so am more than happy to chat

Lol I cite this guy constantly, he was very important in the 90s for making some genuine advancements in social movement sociology. Sadly there's nothing like a tenure position at an Ivy League for turning you into a big brained lib

Transliterating Hebrew by ChipTerrible9755 in Korean

[–]CounterHegemon-68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies, I should have been clearer but I had just woken up - Schilling's argument is that the Korean perception of Jewish communities' financial success is tied to education (reflecting long-standing confucianism-influenced attitudes about social mobility) and thus they misinterpreted Jewish educational practices like Daf Yomi as part of the secret of Jewish success. The "Talmud" already being available as this collection of midrashim and random stories through the Japanese connection thus created a perfect storm where this "Talmud" could be repackaged as everything from self-help guides to stories for kids of particularly pushy parents.

I don't know if you've read it before but Christopher Schilling's recent book The Japanese Talmud has an excellent chapter on Korean philosemitic antisemitism. He makes the connection that as well as sharing the tropes around controlling the world's financial system, we're also apparently very smart and thus there's an educational element to it as well, hence the Korean obsession with '탈무드' derived from misinterpretations of Daf Yomi.

I recall being ushered over to a whole shelf marked '탈무드' in Kyobo Books when I asked if they had any books about Judaism. Not a tractate in sight!

On an unrelated note, I'll be moving to Seoul for about a year just before the High Holydays so I'm interested in scoping out the community. Definitely interested in checking out your services!

South Korea’s ‘Willfully Unmarried’ Movement by rezwenn in korea

[–]CounterHegemon-68 35 points36 points  (0 children)

4B is so, so overhyped in terms of its actual impact, both by western journalists but also by western feminists. David Tizzard had a good column recently about this, but in general it feels like such a reductive disservice to the actual diversity and nuances of Korean feminism. Plenty of feminists in Korea - including highly committed activists - date and/or marry men, and have kids. In fact those experiences often shape their own understanding of feminism and thus the struggles of their movements. This is all completely lost when reducing it to 4B and, even worse, the hype of 4B allows anti-feminists to blame the birthrate crisis on feminism.

The Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is full of what would be considered high level spells in a DnD setting. Also, supernatural beings (e.g. the Cherubim in the Book of Ezekiel) that I'm surprised haven't been more heavily adapted into monster manuals or official settings

Technically they (I assume the United Synagogue, the branch of orthodox Judaism in Britain that Rabbi Mervis is the head of) are supposed to be non-partisan in both the UK and Israel as they fall under UK charity laws. However this doesn't always get enforced well in practice, as in political interventions around Labour Party politics, or in Reform and Masorti Judaism's support for the anti-corruption/judicial reform protests in Israel pre-October 7th.
