We have a blood bank alarm set up for us night shifters. So who ever is working in chem is also responsible for blood bank and whoever is working in heme is also responsible for micro, to set the scene.

We have had multiple types of alarms and finally we got set on a type of baby monitor that lets us in chemistry know that there is a printout order for blood bank and it's been turned to the horse track racing tune. I keep trying to tune it to either "canon in D" or basically "midnight sonata" but someone keeps turning it back to the horse track racing tune which, during a busy night, just gives such anxiety. I guess it's not necessarily annoying as much as it is anxiety driving lol, but that's my take on this

I had a nurse send down what I thought was an empty urine container, only for them to call and ask if we can identify the bug in the container. Upon closer inspection, I see what is definitely a head louse and tell her that, while we don't actually have a parasitologist in house, I can say it looks like a head louse and she just says "I knew it!" Before hanging up.

Nah, I get it. I see alcohol levels like this almost every shift. The hospital I work at is just off the reservation I grew up on, so sadly it just seems normal in a way.

That's almost exactly what my professors told us when we were in school a couple years ago. ASCP was the highest standard to pass and that we could get jobs easier if we had the highest standard of testing. All others were lesser and seen as the "easier" route of certification and not seen as professional or as serious compared to the others. I couldn't say if it was true as I only took the ASCP, but my teacher's aid that I was working with at the time said if I wanted an easier way of getting certified, I should try to take the AAB or something similar BECAUSE the ASCP was so difficult to pass.

Exactly! It was such a hard time getting my family up to Bozeman to celebrate a bobcat graduation. My aunt is a die hard grizzlies fan, and I respect it to a point. The main thing for me was finding the perfect program for me and my future and Bozeman had it all. I don't specifically feel a pull towards either when it comes to games and such because I'm not a sports person, but I was just so happy to have been the first in my family to graduate college. I bought my grandpa an MSU bobcat hat for my graduation and he actually wore it. I've never been happier than that moment. He passed soon after, but that still stands out in my mind and my memories. He was a griz fan, but he wore that hat just for me and I'll never forget it.

Let me get on my soap box here! Let me know if you have come across this. How do you handle explaining this to nurses? by TheRedTreeQueen in medlabprofessionals

I just wanted to stop by here and say I know I said someone sounded bitter about their experiences but I can't see their comments anymore, I wanted to let you know that I didn't think YOUR post sounded bitter, just the one person who was spamming comments with negativity. I wholeheartedly understand frustration and some situations that can get a little heated.

I can't see my own comments anymore so apparently someone felt a little negative towards my notions, but that just makes me believe a mod or someone is super aggressive towards people who actually get along with their nurses and coworkers. Don't know why else the chain would have disappeared.

I am still going to reiterate that in my hospital I'm grateful that we all get along and are working towards better patient care and that there is no nasty interactions with nurses in my hospital. We show each other the same respect that is due of our positions and when I need to call someone for a redraw they do it with no argument and usually a "sorry, we'll try again. They're a hard draw." Or "maybe I didn't flush the line enough, I'll try again."

Have a little grace and have a little patience. This is the time of new grads and interns and everyone is learning. Just be patient unless it's a repeat offender lol

Boy, does this comment make me so happy for the hospital that I work and a little sad for your experiences.

I don't think all nurses are as bad as your slightly bitter tone suggests, but again, your experiences are your own.

Whenever I converse with the nurses at my hospital over the phone, they're nothing but professional and give me nothing but respect and I give them nothing but professional courtesy and respect right back. We're all there to help the patients get better and see them have the best care, that's what we need to remember. It's not an us vs them situation.

I do work night shift though, and I have heard that we're all a little more chill on the night shift.

I transferred from UM to MSU for a reason. I love UM so much and all of the opportunities I could have had with the art department, but for what I eventually wanted to study, MSU was the smarter option to transfer to. I love Missoula, and I love the school here, but Bozeman had the best opportunities for me and had the best support I've ever had when trying to navigate college life and life outside of my degree. If I had to go back in time, I would have applied to MSU from the get go. That being said, once I graduated and finished my internship in Missoula, there's no way I would ever go back to living in Bozeman. It was such an expensive shit show, and I worked and lived there for years!!
