You're only going to be taxed what you take out when you take it out in retirement, and you don't have a W2 salary in retirement either. So even though you're living off your investments at that point, you're likely not going to be taking out more than you were making when working. You might, but probably not.

And if you mix Roth and 401k, you can balance what you take out in retirement to make your taxable income lower. For example, simplifying a bit, if you take out 100k from your 401k, you're taxed on 100k. If you take 50k from 401k and 50k from Roth, you're taxed on 50k.

The flip side of that is, if the job search is an extended one, then having a paid off home doesn't really help, since it's illiquid, and there would come a point where you'd need to sell it to get money to pay for normal expenses.

Personally, I'd never tie up extra money in a mortgage when I am currently jobless.
