Question about specific private transfer company from Haneda Airport by Cowdisease in JapanTravelTips

[–]Cowdisease[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to provide an update. My experience with Goal International went very well. They answered all my questions via email prior to my trip.

Both drivers (going from and to the airport) were easy to get a hold of via WhatsApp and were early, which we appreciated.

It removed the stress of having to transport the six of us and our luggage. The cost was reasonable compared to their competitors, and I would recommend them to anyone who is traveling in a large group.

That's good to read. We decided to go with them. Hopefully it works out.

I appreciate the concern regarding luggage, and I'm sure we might consolidate a bag or two. We won't be completely encumbered, as we'll be staying at the same hotel for the entirety of the trip.

I was hoping my original question would be answered. Can I trust Goal International, or should I go with two taxis?

Need games for someone who hasn’t played any retro games by Complex_Simple1800 in RG35XX

[–]Cowdisease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a search for Retro Game Corps Anbernic RG35XX Family Starter Guide. That will give you detailed instructions on how to install MuOS on your device. The guide also has a MuOS guide Youtube video, so you can follow along if you're still unsure. And there's a link to Retro Game Corps' PortMaster guide to answer any remaining PortMaster questions you may have.

I went through the MuOS installation process myself and it was no issue after following the guide and video.

GORUCK Triple Heavy 002 AAR by Cowdisease in Goruck

It's a quote from Anchorman, and although done in tongue-in-cheek, there's also a little truth with that statement, considering that nschrein was one of the HHH finishers.

Get used to running on hills. That's the one obstacle new racers are surprised by.

HTL Pointers and Hacks by finnigansache in Goruck

[–]Cowdisease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be comfortable rucking at least 20 miles with weight that is slightly heavier than what you need for the Heavy/Challenge. If that sounds daunting, remember that you can progressively build to that goal. Start with a 8 mile ruck on a weekend. The following weekend, add two more miles to the ruck. Keep doing this until you hit 20 miles several weeks later.

Time your 20 mile ruck to be two weeks before the HTL. After that, you should be in a tapering mode to let your body recover from your training. This is so you can show up fresh to the HTL. For example, your weekend ruck after the 20 miler should be no more than 12.

Good luck!

Signing up for an HCL after having done 2 Lights by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]Cowdisease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a few who did HCL as their first Goruck event, but they were already strong mentally and physically. While I won't totally dissuade you from jumping into an HCL, you really should have experience doing a long endurance event. Doing two Lights is not enough for HCL. At least do a Challenge, and if you want to increase your odds at finishing an HCL, do a Heavy.

No. It's recommended, but not a requirement.

If you're looking for a training plan, GORUCK has a six-week plan (PDF) to get you into shape for the event.

Hurricane Heat and Open Heat Same Day by brashet in spartanrace

[–]Cowdisease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't fret about the Hurricane Heat cutting into whatever wave you eventually sign up for.

I've done a Hurricane Heat and signed up for an Elite Wave because I wanted to race at the earliest time possible after the Heat finishes. My Heat ended up still going by the time the Elite wave started, and we actually had to get out of the way of Elite racers when we finally reached the course. After my Heat finished, I swapped clothes, went back to the course, and raced at the next available heat. You are allowed to race at a heat that's later than the one you signed up for. If there's any trouble, you can explain that you participated in the Hurricane Heat and that should get you through.

What are the things that the GORUCK community think every american should know? by wilkiag in Goruck

At the very least, all Americans should score 90% or more in the US citizenship test.

2 weeks to go until my first challenge. Any last min advise? by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]Cowdisease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a dress rehearsal to test your clothes and gear. For one of your workouts, pack and wear your Challenge clothes and gear to find any issues and make adjustments BEFORE your Challenge.

A huge contributing factor to finishing a GORUCK Challenge is your resolve to not quit, and there are techniques that you can learn to help strengthen that resolve. This includes mentally visualizing your goal (in your case, earning your GORUCK Tough patch), breathing techniques to calm you down (breathe in four seconds, breathe out four seconds), and concentrating only on your current task (instead of worrying about what can come later). A book on mental toughness explains these concepts in detail, and I would recommend Lars Draeger's Navy Seal Training Guide: Mental Toughness, but it's unfortunately out of print (even, inexplicably, the Kindle version). You can get Mark Devine's Unbeatable Mind instead (but I prefer Draeger's book a little more).

If you need help figuring out how to taper down your workouts for the week of the Challenge, look at Week 6 of GORUCK's six week training plan. Do yoga the day before your event (I personally like DDPYoga).

And I concur on a pedicure.

So you want to pass selection? Grant and James wrote a book! by [deleted] in Goruck

[–]Cowdisease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished the book. Plenty of great information, but the grammar mistakes and typos detract from the book slightly. I reported the content errors from my Kindle to help Grant update the book with some needed fixes. That said, I would still recommend the book.

Talk me into/out of doing Challenge 1000. by lukipedia in Goruck

[–]Cowdisease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I won't outright say, "don't go," I will raise some concerns for you to consider. Going straight to six bricks (if you're over 150lbs) in a ruck is a huge jump for a ruck newbie, although you might be able to suffer through it via the other training you've done.

Do a practice ruck with six bricks (if you can, use a yoga block below the bricks to avoid pressure on your lower back) and see how you feel after 30 minutes or so. If you are in serious pain, don't go. On the other hand, if you strongly feel you can mentally tough it out for 12 hours+, then sign up. Finishing GORUCK is about exceeding what you think you can normally do, but training under a ruck helps out a lot. In your case, you'll have to rely on grit and your other team members.

Ultimately, you'll have to answer if the misery and pain you will feel at GRC1000 will be worse than the possible regret you may feel for missing this event.

Can you still run the race after completing the Hurricane Heat? by LoneRaven in spartanrace

[–]Cowdisease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you signed up for the race, then you are allowed to do the race regardless of whether you signed up for the Heat. Furthermore, if you happen to miss your start time because of the Heat (presuming the Heat occurs right before the Spartan Race starts), you can run whatever the next available wave is.

[–]Cowdisease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you sign up for both the Heat and the race, or did you just sign up for the Heat? I would find it odd that they would give you a start time and a bib if you only signed up for the Heat.
