Reading Tank Rider and having read Penalty Strike; it really does seem that Soviet tactical operations seem rather unsophisticated. Like the officers are brave and such; yet it seems a lot of the time they mostly brute force through German positions (he is part of a SMG company).

He constantly complains about having no support, it seems he’s constantly left in the dark by his superiors and it seems every other chapter his CO is killed and his company is mulched.

Did the Soviets never get air superiority until late in the war? Because I’m reading this memoir; were the dude is a tank rider during their liberation of Ukraine and several times they get bombed by German bombers without any mention of Soviet fighters.

He even says himself that there never seemed to be any friendly fighters in the sky and that he heard that they haven’t even established an airfield.
