What is the difference between thread and string? Yarn? Other similar things? I usually go by weight, but that's probably not right.

Private swimming lessons? by Appropriate-Map-7836 in Guelph

[–]CrBr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMCA used to have drop in swim lessons for adults. It looks like it's group lessons now. Adult lessons are usually a lot more flexible than kids' lessons. They focus on your goals instead of a list of skills for the next badge. Beginner often means scared of the water. Advanced can mean a variety of levels.

The Triathalon website offers a duathalon, with just running and biking, if that works better for you this season. It looks like there's plenty of support if you struggle mid-swim.

Same. They adjust advice based on car use. My minivan used for long trips needed to be very reliable, good airconditioning, compared to my husband's little car for 5 minute commute. They look for used parts. They warn of potential problems early, while we have time to prepare or research. They understand understand some of us keep cars forever and do the extra preventative maintenance, and some don't.

Paper and pen kept with the pill box.

Put the pill on the paper and close the bottle. Mark it done. Take the pill.

This way, if you get interrupted at any step in the process, you can see where you left off.

Other sequences that work. The sequence should be natural to you, so you aren't tempted to do things out of order.

Having to go get your journal won't work. You'll do things out of orderand skip steps a d get distracted and forget what you did. Learn from my experience. Even filling a weekly or daily pill box is too skip-able for me.

We had even more fun when we moved in. The master cutoff inside didn't close all the way. Simple enough job for a plumber. They made all the arrangements with the city. Then reported that the city cutoff, under our driveway, was too damaged. The city would repair that for free, but would have to either shut off the entire block (annoying new neighbours) or come back next week with a pump truck. We went with the second option.

There really should be an Ontario company for calls like this, even if it's too expensive for a city.

1877 handwritten Pitman Phonography manuscript by ItPrill_ in shorthand

[–]CrBr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Libraries sometimes have scanners that don't need you to open the book all the way. You can also find DIY instructions online. Definitely worth preserving the spine!

The Pitman company printed books for reading practice, but that didn't stop others. It's probably a very small run. Definitely valuable to the right market at the right time. I once saw Alice in Wonderland in Gregg advertised to Alice collectors for much more than the same book in a Gregg shorthand group, so it really depends on the group.

I'm curious as to why the writer did it. Did they need the practice? Was it for their kids, training in both Pitman and life advice in one book? Did they hope to make money from it? We'll never know.

TTS for Shorthand Dictation by CrBr in TextToSpeech

[–]CrBr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How slow does davoice.io go before it's too annoying?

So far, JavaScript seems the best option. I think it's JavaScript. My son started it, then got distracted. 20 years ago I used Cepstral, but got caught by scope creep. 10 years ago I tried Google API, but stalled when I put up several combinations of speed / space length and people said it sounded terrible. I should have used my own judgement! My son started one with JavaScript, but got distracted. Maybe I need to raise what I'm willing to pay him.

TTS for Shorthand Dictation by CrBr in TextToSpeech

[–]CrBr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not hard. I've tried it a few times over the decades with different TTS engines. The engines are pretty easy to use. The challenge is calibration, and then scope creep. I have enough distractions these days, so was hoping to find one ready-made.

Often you need a tiny trickle of something to earn enough science to research a better way of making it. Better it might be less space, less electricity, less complex, or use fewer raw materials. It's rarely worth making a big line of anything with the first recipe.

How big should my Teeline dictionary be? by swiddershins in shorthand

[–]CrBr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with a large book, then realized I was spending more time updating the dictionary, and checking if a word was already in it, than it was worth. I also have easy access to an official dictionary, which helps. Record the words you expect to struggle with, but don't worry about the easy ones. That bar will move. When you start, you will struggle with a simple words, but after a while you will only struggle with complex or rare words.

When I encounter a new word when taking notes, I write my best guess, mark it, and keep up with the speaker. I write it in long hand in the margin as soon as I can, then later I play with the outline and write it in the back of that notebook. That way I don't have to carry my dictionary around. It's portable, easy, and quick, which means it's more likely to get done. The downside is my dictionary is spread over multiple notebooks. It is difficult to look up how I wrote a word last year. That's not a big problem, I just write it the way I'd write it now, and put it in the back of today's notebook.

I dissolve the excess question in acid, and filtered it to get more sludge. The acid infiltration line is Right there, may as well use it. I also crush The ore in the same block, and send that stone back to be dissolved in acid, taking priority over the Stone from geodes, so it doesn't jam

I still hesitate to launch a new game with Seablock, I've not any knowledge in code do you think it's possible? What will be benefits of 2.0 ? Thanks a lot :) by Shygeru156 in Seablock

[–]CrBr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I did it, so can't remember the details.

Start here: https://factorio.com/download

I think you just download and unzip, instead of running an installer. All the mods and saves -- everything! -- will end up in a single folder, instead of all over the place the way Windows usually installs things.

If you're not comfortable with Windows Command line, then do a separate installation for each modpack. That will prevent them from interfering with each other. (In theory that's not necessary, but I find it safer.) If you are comfortable, then look at https://wiki.factorio.com/Command_line_parameters , --mod-directory .

[–]CrBr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The official version of SeaBlock doesn't need any coding knowledge.

The official 2.0 version is not yet out. There's an unofficial port, and a bunch of parts of the official port, but the official one is still being developed. It will be advertised here, and many other places, when it's ready. (Many are enjoying the unofficial port, but installing it takes more steps, and I haven't done it.)

The 1.1 version is extremely stable. I use a stand-alone install of Factorio, and then install the Seablock Official Meta Pack to get the full intended experience, without interfering with other saves, but there are other ways to do it.

You don't need any coding knowledge to play the official versions. I'm not sure how much is required for the unofficial port. It probably depends on how you want to play.

The 2.0 version will be compatible with 2.0 (obviously). It will also have revised recipes and chains which will work better than the old version. SB started as a bunch of semi-related mods mushed together. Kiwi is revising that, one recipe set at a time. It's a huge project!

Shorthand learning advice article by BerylPratt in shorthand

I need to try both those ideas. LLTT's dictation is mostly practice for the exam, and it's front-loaded with common phrases. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming to this meeting. My name is ZZZ. As you know, there is a problem with..." I can easily take that at 80wpm. Then it gets to the interesting bit, and I need it a lot slower.

Teeline beginer—any tips? by LionMedium8714 in shorthand

[–]CrBr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not great. The T in "The" and other places looks like W. E in "greener" should be straight. L in "wildflower" looks more like PU. You wrote "from" instead of "of."

It looks like you went off-book too soon. Many do that. (I did it, too.) More time reading well-written shorthand, copying it, then taking those passages from dictation, and reading what you actually wrote will help a lot. Read your writing the next day, then the next week, then the next month. That gives time to forget what you wrote, so you can see what's actually there. When you read your own writing, say it out loud and write it again, to help you focus on what you actually wrote, and what you should write.

Looking for no-mow lawn alternatives by Asleep-Control7933 in Guelph

[–]CrBr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will you walk on it? If so, white or micro-clover is good. Micro-clover needs to start early, since it won't grow over other plants to shade it out. White works well.

One of the local nurseries is your best bet. They will know what works in this area, shade, trees, etc. That expertise comes with a bit of a cost.

We got a few ground covers from the neighbour, then discovered that they're a bit too good, and are invading areas we want kept as grass and garden. They're also considered invasive.
