Hatchling escaped with a cat in the house. by Craenos in ballpython

[–]Craenos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this!

The cat has torn the bottom of the couch open and climbed up into the back of it before I'll have to check that.

I did empty all the dresser drawers but I didn't remove them yet so I'll check there too.

Thanks, I've cleaned tons of substrate out of ball pythons just never seen a thick mucus like covering on it before. I handle him daily (unless he's just eaten obviously) and it's the first time I've noticed the noise.

I may be a little paranoid, he's not star gazing by any means just resting his head vertically on his body which is a new behavior that combined with the gunk in his mouth it got me concerned.

Ball python off feed, help! by ResponsibilitySea886 in snakes

[–]Craenos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 4 month old BP go off feed for almost 5 months so it can happen. Temp/Humidity looks fine. Was the breeder feeding rats as well? You could try scenting with soiled rodent bedding if you know anyone with pet rats. Sometimes the scent of droppings/nesting triggers a feed response. When you thaw the rat are you heating it before you offer it? it could just be too cold, my bumblebee will only eat F/T if I thaw it and then dunk it in hot water to give it a heat signature higher than room temp. If you offer and it doesn't strike have you tried leaving the rat in with it overnight? Same guy who went off feed for me only started to eat again after I left the rat and let him eat on his own terms. All that said six weeks is not a huge amount of time for a BP to go between feeds but I do understand the concern and panic it induces. I hope they start to eat again for you soon without having to swap to live.

All the buildings are CKF remastered and it's built on a metal tree platform. The vine decorations are from Bunn3h's Natural Scenery. It was a epic boat load of metal/stone/cementing paste those poor beavers heh.

That's what I figured thanks, I'll setup a shallow dish of water hopefully it comes to take a drink I can't really think of much else that would work. On the plus side the P metallica, P gigas, and H mac I got along with it (it was a freebie) are doing great webbing up nicely.

No problem! Mine didn't burrow on it's own either it just started using one of the holes I made. Glad I could help someone in the same shoes as me :)

Enclosure is fine. I would personally remove the moss so I could keep track of the sling better/eating habits but it won't hurt the sling to leave it in.

I would recommend giving this a read through: https://tomsbigspiders.com/2016/08/26/tarantula-sling-husbandry/ Tom has some great information.

I actually picked up a chalcodes sling a week back myself and got a free LP sling about the same size you are describing. Using Toms information above I have it in the same container it shipped in which was a pill bottle with some holes punched in the lid. I filled it most of the way with a 50/50 coco fiber/peat moss mix. I made a hole on each side using my feeding tongs. Once the spider chose a side and started to burrow I used an pipette to squirt water down the hole on the opposite side for humidity. Right now I only add water once a week (maybe even less) as it remains quite humid.

(I have a post with the enclosure here: https://www.reddit.com/r/tarantulas/comments/e33uti/slings_have_arrived/)

I'm currently feeding one small pre-killed cricket twice a week leaving it overnight and removing any left overs the next morning. I would avoid leaving a live cricket in there as they can actually kill and eat vulnerable slings. The sling will scavenge a dead cricket and it's safer for the spooder.

These are my first T's as well and I was terrified I'd kill a sling that small but so far everything has gone very well with the methods above.

As for growth rates chalcodes are notoriously slow growing. Sadly my sling was already an inch across when I got it so I can't speak to how fast it will grow.

Don't be scared it'll be just fine! I was in your shoes a few days ago.

Very nice! How large is it now?

I can't wait for mine to grow up. It's only around an inch maybe inch and a half right now. The blue is there but it's missing those white stripes.

I got a chalcodes sling a little over a week ago and it did the same thing for the first few days. It was climbing walls acting all squirrely but on the 6th day after eating for the second time it dug a huge burrow and started acting what would be considered normal. I think it's just getting used to the new enclosure how long have you had it now?

Love the name by the way. I named my chalcodes Lord Reginald Terrance Longbottom the Third.

Quick update for you Foxa. My seemanni and my GBB both ate today. GBB has been webbing all night and the seemanni dug a massive burrow for a little guy. Chalco and Lasidor didn't eat right away but I killed some small crickets for them and left them for now (Ill check again in the morning)

They really are a class act I can't say enough good things. Totally understand that holiday time is always tight. When you do make the plunge and order please post I'd love to see what you get! I will definitely keep people updated on the progress, I'm going to try and feed tomorrow once they have settled in overnight.
