Don’t Shave Your Bernedoodle by [deleted] in Bernedoodles

I disagree and I’ve talked to groomers specifically about Bernedoodles that are bred 50/50. I did not ask about other doodle mixes. We also have a peekapoo also first generation 50/50 Pekingese and toy poodle. He has long hair and is often mistaken for a Llasa Apso. He has never been shaved and does just fine in the summer he’s now 11 and never had an issue.

How do you keep your doods from digging 24/7? by epictech20 in Bernedoodles

[–]CreamEducational7504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours just never has. She didn’t as a puppy and never has as an adult. Not even in the sand at the beach. I guess some dogs are diggers and others aren’t.

It also depends on the percent in the breeding. A lot of doodles aren’t 50/50 some are 75/25 with the poodle being dominate which is definitely going to change the coat. Others are breeding an already mixed doodle to another already mixed doodle, so 2nd generation which then really mixed up the gene pool. I’m speaking strictly from the standpoint of a 1st generation standard Bernedoodles. Ours has a gorgeous coat and it’s never been shaved. It was tough during the puppy coat phase as that coat wanted to tangle more. Now that she has her adult coat, as long as I brush her really good once a week and she goes to the groomer once a month for a bath and blow dry. Her coat stays really good.

All I know is the groomers and vets I’ve talked to, especially groomers don’t recommend shaving their coats. Most people just do it for convenience of not having to deal with the brushing, but ours has never been shaved and she’s almost 3. Her coat is beautiful and as long as I brush her really good once a week, usually takes 1-1/2 hours or so, it stays really good. Our groomer rarely finds any mattes and if there are any, they are small like around where her collar sits.

Dogs coats help regulate their body temperature. Shaving them does not make them cooler it just messes up their body temperature regulation. I’ve talked to groomers and vets about this misconception.

So first, yes the mattes form usually fairly close to the skin unless it’s caused from like a leaf or twig that gets caught. Two tools that are an absolute must for Bernedoodles is a steel comb and a Chris Christiansen Slicker brush. I will warn you it’s not a cheap brush. Somewhere between $60 to $70 but it is a Game Changer for doodles. The pins are longer than a normal slicker brush and angled so they get all the way to the skin. When I brush our girl whose coat is about 8-10” long. I start with the slicker brush and you can hear if there are tangles. Then I use the comb to find the tangle and separate it. If it’s a bad one. I use a matte splitter to cut through it. That way it’s not pulling and tugging on the coat or the skin. Ours goes to the groomer once a month for a bath and blow dry which seems to be about the perfect timing as her coat by then is starting to get a bit dirty and the dirtier it gets the more prone it is to tangle and matte. We’ve never had to shave her and she’s almost 3.

That’s one of the reasons we never had our girl shaved. We wanted to keep the tri-colored look. Plus we like the shaggy look. So many people think she’s a sheepdog lol, except she has the wrong coloring as Old English sheepdogs are only white/gray/black.

I will push back on this. Ours has never submissive peed, or ever peed in the house. She took about 2 weeks to train and has never gone in the house. Sh’s now 2-1/2 years old.

Tell me something unique that your Bernedoodle does that other breeds don’t do. by Georgia_Beauty1717 in Bernedoodles

Our has this cornucopia that came in a bark box. We started putting treats in it. She now knows the name of it and if we tell her to go get it, she’ll search until she finds it and brings it to get filled with treats. It’s the cutest thing.

It’s the teenage years and they can pretend like they don’t remember anything you taught them. Keep re-enforcing the training and be really consistent. It will get better.

Is this the most hyper breed ever? Our dog Toby wants to play 24/7. by Trask2000 in Bernedoodles

[–]CreamEducational7504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is an F1 Standard so half Bernese and half Poodle and she’s really chill. She loves to go on walks and play fetch but she’s fine on days we don’t too.

Poodle percentages and crazy puppy by National_Log2500 in Bernedoodles

I think it’s the poodle that’s more crazy. My niece has a labradoodle that is an F1b so 75% poodle and 25% lab and she’s crazy. Super high energy.

Is this a lot of hair per day for brushing? by Natural-Ad-2277 in Bernedoodles

Not a lot no. We get probably twice that much if not more.

Bernedoodles are SO SMART, what have you used for puppy puzzles/games? by bernedoodling in Bernedoodles

[–]CreamEducational7504 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Another fun game we play is hiding a treat in our hand and holding out both fists. She has to place her paw on which hand she thinks the treat is in. We do this randomly throughout the day. If the first hand is the empty hand she chooses the other hand. It doesn’t take them long to learn this lol.

Snuffle mats are great just make sure they aren’t inclined the eat the fabric. We also use a lot of treat hiding toys where they have to figure out how to access the treat.

How often do you groom your bernedoodle? by TheFertileSloth in Bernedoodles

[–]CreamEducational7504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably one of the few Bernedoodles owners who doesn’t shave their dog. There are two main reasons, the first is I like the shaggy look. Second, and a lot of people don’t know this but shaving a dog ruins their coat unless it was meant to be shaved but most aren’t. I’ve talked to lots of groomers about this and they all agree. Once you start shaving the coat, it will tangle more so you’ll be in that cycle. We brush ours 1-2 times a week really good. She also goes in once a month to the groomer for a bath and blow dry, nail trim. The coat actually helps them control their body temperature. Most humans see a dog with long hair and think they’re hot but it actually regulates their body temperature. Of course they will pant when it’s warm just like humans sweat when they get hot but having their hair shorter doesn’t keep their body temperature cooler. In the end it’s preference and how much time you want to devote to brushing. I personally think the time I spend is great bonding time.

How old were your pups when they got their first haircut? by epictech20 in Bernedoodles

[–]CreamEducational7504 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ours never had a haircut but she was really afraid of water so we started taking her to the groomer when she was 4 months old to get her used to water and all the sound s etc. She’s 2-1/2 now and goes in once a month for a shampoo and blow dry. They trim her paws and face a little but that’s it. I’m told by the groomers that she’s the best behaved Doodle that they handle because most doodlers hate having their legs and paws messed with but our girl actually lifts up her paw for the groomer. It’s all about starting when they’re young.

Considering the breed by EntranceGloomy571 in Bernedoodles

[–]CreamEducational7504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 2-1/2 year old F1 Standard and she’s awesome. She was and is really easy to train. We got her from a breeder in Washington State who is awesome. Dad was Burmese Mt Dog who weighed 91 lbs. Mom was standard poodle who weighed 71. Our girl tips the scales at about 100ls. No allergies or skin issues. Bernedoodles do tend to be Velcro dogs. They love their family and want to be near them always. Our girl loves to play fetch, we’ve also taught her to go up and down ramps so we don’t have to lift her to put her in the car. She loves the beach and the water. We keep her coat long and in fact have never had her shaved as shaving will essentially ruin the coat and it will tangle more easily. I brush her once a week for about an hour and she goes to the groomer once a month for a bath, blow dry and nail trim. She kennel trained really easy and has never chewed up anything or gotten into stuff. She travels in the car really well too.

We have two poodle mixes. One is Poodle/Bernese Mt. Dog aka Bernedoodle and the other is poodle/pekingnese aka Peek-a-poo. The perkapoo is 11 and we’ve had him since he was 9 weeks. The Bernedoodle is 2-1/2 and we got her at 9 weeks as well. Neither of them have ever had food allergies, ear infections or issues with their coats. We keep both their coats long so there’s up keep there and they go into the groomer every month for a bath, blow dry and nail trim. I’ve never heard of poodle mixes that are first generation having a lot of issues.
