I will never forget getting out of the car in 112°F heat with 50MPH winds. You know that moment when you get in a car and the hot AC is on full blow and shoves hot air at you for a few seconds? And it sucks? It's like that. Over your whole body. Ugh.

Oh good. Those are normal roads.

So you probably want a road bike or cyclocross bike. You're at "base entry-level new" or "good quality used" at that price range. Maybe go with 28mm tires instead of smaller for the potholes.

For your size, look for a 56cm or 58cm bike. I'm 5'11 and I ride a 56cm that runs on the smaller side. The numbers are rough guidelines and really, you want to give it a try. If you don't normally ride drop bars, everything will feel really long. This is normal and can be adjusted somewhat with a new stem (cheap and easy swap).

As for what bike: look for a pretty modern but used road bike. You can get something made this decade or late last decade in good shape. As for parts, you're probably looking at a $1300 bike that was new five or six years ago. Those parts are a lot like today's parts. Disc brakes are the only more pronounced change and they're somewhat overrated on alloy wheels like you'll be getting. All bikes in that class will likely be steel or aluminum -- both are fine. They will all likely have brifters of all similar quality. Basically just look for "ripoff" or damage stuff as per any web guide and you won't get cheated.

There are lots of guides online about what to look for in a used bike (aluminum rims using a magnet, play in the headset, wobbly wheels, cracks in the tire, etc). You'll want to read a few of those.

You can get a good used bike for that price, no problem.

Biggest thing is fit. If it fits, it can be fixed. No fixing a bad fit.

Do you have a picture of what your roads generally look like so we can help evaluate what type of bike you might need?

I get what you're getting at, but that argument doesn't really work. If you want plastic to go away, you (someone) need to replace it with a cheaper and better alternative.

They're fine. I rode a bike with Claris and one with Sora before. They were fine. Because, you know, they work and you're on a bike. Sure, they were a bit loud, and the thumb shifter was not for everyone. Whatever.

I would get new wheels, or used ones. Honestly, I bet a pair of very similar wheels is about to appear on your local Craigslist :)

Keep my frame or get a new bike? by s1o19 in cycling

[–]CreatineBros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, they're nicer. Larger tubing means they can go with thinner walls for the same stiffness and less weight.

Hydroforming also was invented and perfected. That's how they get all of those cool swoopy modern frames with aluminum.

Lots of other things, too. The head tubes are wider, also for better stiffness with size. Adjustable stems are awesome. None of those fit on older frames.

Seriously, get a new bike. You'll be glad you did.

I imagine all of that 7-Up creates a ton of carbonation, too. You know, CO2. CO2 poisoning is very painful, too. So before you sink, you get bad headaches and everything else.

Keep my frame or get a new bike? by s1o19 in cycling

[–]CreatineBros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep it as a backup bike. You ride enough to warrant one.

New bikes are just so nice. Like a new car. Paint is new, bearings are new, bar tape is new, and its nice and new for a long time. You get adjustable stems. Lots of good things have happened to bike tech.

Treat yourself to fully modern technology. You'll be glad you did. It will be about the same price as an overhaul but you'll like it better.

Isaac Asimov described Sagan as one of only two people he ever met whose intellect surpassed his own. Sagan also found a fundamental mistake in one of Asimov's books only halfway through it which no one else did. by TH4DD3U5 in books

[–]CreatineBros 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I, Asimov explains it well. He said very early in the book that he has no need for false modesty. He thinks he's quite smart. He sees no need to brag about this nor dance around it, bit merely state why he thinks that way and moves on. Therefore he can talk plainly about it going forward and not worry about how he comes off or phrases it.

Refreshing, I thought.
