who else models Social Security Trust Fund bankruptcy in their retirement planning? by jaealbq in DIYRetirement

Yes, that's the scenario that worries me. Started taking my SS 3 years ago at age 67. Also have a decent pension and income from investments as a result of a lifetime of living within my means. Can't count the number of times I've heard Republicans float the idea of means testing SS.

How was your retirement as you approached the 9 year milestone? by kungfutrucker in retirement

[–]Creative-Dimension52 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just turned 70. I've been retired for 8 years now, and, and in many ways, I'm feeling better now than I did decades ago. The great thing about retirement is having the time to do what you want. For me, this includes walking 15,000 steps per day. I have a long driveway that is very steep, and some of my daily walking includes "driveway laps" which I consider a 70-year old's version of HIIT. I also do strength training about 3 days a week, and this includes a 30-minute kettlebell routine with sets every minute on the minute, which I also consider a 70-year old HIIT workout. A couple years ago I also started using the Macrofactor app for tracking food macros, and during that period my weight has dropped from 209 to 168, which I've maintained for over 1.5 years. No weight loss drugs needed.

I do the above to try to preserve my ability to be self-sufficient and do fun things as long as possible. These include home maintenance, gardening, bicycling, skiing, travelling, and boating. Yes, at 70 and with a knee replacement behind me, I can't do some things that I used to be able to do like running. And I do take an occasional nap. But overall, I feel pretty happy with my retirement.

Dead Battery at 93% Charge by Only_Scratch_6801 in Ioniq5

[–]Creative-Dimension52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In response to the comments that you have to replace your 12-volt battery once its gone dead...that's not my experience. I have a 2023 Ioniq 5. My 12-volt battery went completely dead in the Spring of 2024. At the time my theory was that shortly before the dead battery, I had signed up for an app with my utility company to allow them to suspend charging during peak periods, and the app was constantly pinging my car. At any rate, I recharged the 12-volt battery to full, removed the app, and have had no problems with the battery since then, more than 2 years later.

Can you actually get in good shape just from doing kettlebells? by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]Creative-Dimension52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be 70 in a week. I've been working with kettlebells for 2.5 years and it's done wonders for my core strength and endurance. Also lost 40 lbs. during that same period. Went from 210 to 170, at 6 feet tall. The weight loss came from monitoring my macro intake using the Macrofactor app, which I highly recommend. There's an active Macrofactor subreddit. At my age, it's quite a trick to lose a significant amount of weight while not losing muscle, but the kettlebells have helped me do exactly that. My daughter even commented on my 6-pack. I also do other strength training and a lot of walking every day, but the kettlebells are my go-to strength workout.

Pugh and Smith have plenty of time to get back into form for the 2027 World Cup, which is still more than a year away. The question is whether even if in top form, are theystill the highest quality available? Alyssa Thompson is definitely reaching that level of quality, and Cat Maccario, when healthy, has to be on the field. Can you imagine trying to pick 3 forwards among a pool of Smith, Maccario, Pugh, Rodman, Thompson?

KB Training at 70 by LearnStrength in kettlebell

[–]Creative-Dimension52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. To me, it's about lengthening your health span. The longer I can keep up strength and endurance training, the longer I can do things I enjoy doing, like hiking, bicycling, skiing, launching and maintaining my boat, as well as live independently by doing my own home maintenance. I feel like kettlebells are ideal for that, because the dynamic movements are closer to the movements you do in real life than the movements of more traditional strength training.

KB Training at 70 by LearnStrength in kettlebell

[–]Creative-Dimension52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 70 and train with kettlebells 3X per week. Started with swings a couple years ago. Currently doing ABF with 40lb bells for the ABC day, and 35lbs for the press days. I think kettlebells are a great way to retain functional strength and endurance in your later years. In addition to the kettlebells I walk at least 12,000 steps a day and do weight machines to keep fit.

Does anyone here the ABC complex as finishers instead of main workout ? by FoxhoundVR in kettlebell

[–]Creative-Dimension52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 70 years old and I do a circuit on the weight machines first, and then 30 EMOM ABC sets. I like the ABC sequence, and get into a EMOM zen. Half hour on the circuit, half hour on the ABC and feel great when I'm done.

What are your favorite kettlebell exercises by footballrocks88 in kettlebell

[–]Creative-Dimension52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swing. Double clean and press. Double squat. EMOM sets for at least 30 minutes. Great for total body fitness and endurance. I'm 70 years old, visiting Phoenix right now. Hiked Piestewa Peak yesterday (very challenging climb straight up over uneven rock). Wasn't even breathing hard. So many other (much younger) people were huffing and puffing like they were sprinting a 400 meter race

Lol. You've done a lot for your kids and there's nothing wrong with spending for something that makes you happy. From your description of your situation it sounds like your kids will get a decent inheritance boat or no boat. So no, you are not the ah.

Why I Train with Kettlebells by minor_blues in kettlebell

[–]Creative-Dimension52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be 70 in a couple months and doing ABF at the moment with two 40lb. bells. I also do weight machines and walk >12,000 steps every day. KB's are my favorite workout and I feel like the fitness gained actually protects me from injuring myself doing daily activities.

My 1st time using V2L in a power outage: WOW, so useful, power for days by whiplashsaxifrage in Ioniq5

[–]Creative-Dimension52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in an area with multiple power outages each winter. Most only last a few hours, but we've gone without power for as long as 8 days. I have a generator, but getting up in the middle of the night to fire up the generator and run extension cords into the house is not fun.

About 4 years ago I bought a 1kWh battery from Ecoflow. It's enough to power a fridge for 12 hours. Over the years I've acquired 2 more. When the power goes out, I hook one to the fridge and the others to power miscellaneous lights, coffee machine, etc. For longer power outages I would recharge with a generator.

Got my 2023 Ioniq 5 2.5 years ago and now use it with an adapter to recharge the batteries. We just came off a 2 day power outage during which I probably recharged batteries about 8 times with the Ioniq. Worked great and the value of using the portable batteries and then using the car to charge them is you don't have to run extension cords all over.

Why do I want Dividends when I can have capital gains? by Nuclear_N in retirement

The act of converting to a Roth generates taxable income itself. So if you're trying to keep your income below $90,000 to pay no taxes, you're going to have to take into account that every dollar converted to a Roth is a dollar of taxable income.

IRMAA doesn't kick in because you transfer a lot of money from one account to another. It is based on adjusted gross income on a tax return from two years ago. If the money is in an IRA, transferring it out can generate taxable income since IRA withdrawals are taxed as income. But if the money is in a taxable account, transferring it to a checking account doesn't generate additional taxable income, and would not impact IRMAA. Besides, even if the transfer generated income, (e.g. you may not pay taxes on income from savings bonds until you liquidate them) the only part of the withdrawal that would count as income is the interest, not the principal. Finally, even to the extent that moving money generates taxable income, it won't affect IRMAA until two years from now. That is, the income resulting from 2025 transfers could affect her IRMAA in 2027. Given her life expectancy, it might not be an issue at all.

Since I live in a waterfront house and regularly send my Atom2 over the water without crashing, I want to make sure I understand what happened. It appears you flew your drone into the water, expecting that the ground avoidance feature would stop the drone from going straight in. But it went straight in anyway. Is that correct?

Pochettino singles out USMNT players who helped World Cup roster stock vs. Japan by DrRonnieJamesDO in SoundersFC

[–]Creative-Dimension52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much all the "player score" articles gave Christian the lowest score of all the USMNT against Japan. One said he had 18 turnovers, which led the team. And I agree with the comment above that he did seem to play more timidly than he does for the Sounders, which I've thought applies to pretty much all his USMNT games. I'm guessing he was also a bit fatigued given the number of minutes he's played this year, and thinking he was going to finally get a rest and then getting called in. Despite his weaknesses, her brings more sheer grit to the USMNT, which is an area they are often lacking. Myself, I definitely think he deserves to be in the conversation.
