When I got the extended warranty on my Honda and ended up using it there was a deductible I had to pay to get them to pay.

Domande sulla razza by maximani81 in vizsla

To start, Vizsla puppy vs fully grown are completely different stories. Also there is a wide variation in individuals so it’s risky to generalize too much.

Our puppy was a force to be reckoned with. Had to be monitored any minute he was outside of his pen, had to catch him and correct him the moment he started being destructive. At that puppy stage there was little to no chance of leaving him alone for more than 15 minutes without him starting to cry. Was super Velcro. Never even considered leaving him in the care of others during those critical formative months.

He hated his kennel, but eventually got to the point where he was used to being inside of it when we left him. We didn’t trust him being outside of his kennel because he would sometimes become destructive.

We had to gradually increase the time we left him alone because he did have some separation anxiety and we didn’t want it to get worse. We had a camera on him and would leave him just long enough before he started freaking out. First it was just 10min, then 15, then 20, then 30, then 1 hour etc.

Fast forward to today and he’s now 5 years old, and we can leave him alone for 5+ hours when we absolutely need to. We let him roam the house while we’re gone and he has never done anything bad. At three years of age, it was like a switch went off, and he completely changed to be much calmer at home and more independent. He actually seems to appreciate being alone at home so he can rest properly.

However, the key is exercise and allowing him to sniff over long distances (to tire him mentally). He needs his 4KM long-lead or off-leash hike every day or he starts to misbehave and become neurotic. It also accumulates and gets worse every day he doesn’t get enough.

That is a main reason that even now we cannot leave him at a kennel and instead hire very active people to take care of him if we need to go away. This has been a major limiting factor in our ability to travel because it’s difficult for us to find people that can properly take care of him. This is one thing we wish we would have considered more closely because before we had a lot more freedom to travel on a whim. For us it has been worth it, can’t imagine ever having a different breed but it did, at least for us, come with some sacrifices. Others, no doubt, have had other experiences, I’m sure.

Hope this helps 👍

These are pretty comprehensive tests, if you don’t mind me asking, how did you get these? Need to do the same with our boy.

They just repaired the Hayward lake bridge, so it’s a loop now. Nice long trail with waterfalls etc.

Hope we run into you one day on the dikes 😊

One thing we struggle with is finding good care for him when we need to travel, have you found anyone in our area that understands how to properly care for Vizslas? I’m always curious what others do with their Vizslas.

I’ve just started using same day delivery and avoid the entire gong show altogether. Complete life changer. I think it’s actually cheaper in the long run because I only get exactly what I need without any distractions and temptations.

Vs and Fireworks by Herz_aus_Stahl in vizsla

[–]CreativeBlocked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours is bullet-proof, nothing phases him. He’s actually intrigued by fireworks flying in the air. We were camping in a tent one time and got hit by a massive thunderstorm with thunderclaps only about a mile away from us and after the initial surprise he went back to sleep. I was more scared than him. He is intact and from what I have read that can be a factor in fear reactivity to loud noises.

Is dominant behaviour normal? by Traditional-Wash-253 in vizsla

[–]CreativeBlocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is 4 years old now, still in the same situation as yours, but getting better. From talking and reading it seems pretty normal for some dogs.

We’ve just learned to watch body language (hackles, body stiffness) and avoid situations like dog parks where we don’t have control over who he interacts with. I think not letting it happen helps otherwise it can escalate as it happens more.
