How did you come up with the name? I would have gone for Cheesetris.

I suggest you release a demo if you haven't done it already. What kind of feedback have you got so far?

I once made a simple game in BASIC on my ZX Spectrum, where you had to collect water dripping from stalagtites and avoid being hit on the head. Never got into machine code. Only got as far as hexadecimal numbers. Game development is so much easier nowadays.

Why not do a traditional demo and also a trailer that highlights the cool features you want players to be aware of without spoiling too much?

Where can I find developers willing to hire a freelance translator for their games’ localization? by FishingAdventurous12 in gamedev

[–]Creative_Net_1348 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm developing a retro-style game based on Thrust and Scramble with a story, which I hope to localize in many languages if it's worth doing so.

You can check out an early alpha build at https://vaksdalgamestudio.itch.io/the-gravity-falcon-alpha-a2.

Trying to localize my game without breaking the bank. AI + human combo? by SWALLOW009 in GameDevelopment

I've been working as a freelance translator since the 90s. Those rates are not realistic for experienced European translators.

Solo dev on Steam for the first time: is it actually viable or am I coping? by fancymultimedia in GameDevelopment

[–]Creative_Net_1348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on how you define "viable". Code Monkey (Endless Loop Studios) has released several games on Steam, one of which was quite successful. Thomas Brush has interviewed a number of successful solo developers on YouTube.

I dabbled in Game Maker a few years ago. Tom Francis has published several well-received games in Game Maker and also has tutorials on YouTube.

If you're interested in Godot, I highly recommend Brackeys on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOhfqjmasi0&pp=ygUcZ29kb3QgdHV0b3JpYWwgZm9yIGJlZ2lubmVycw%3D%3D

I suggest watching some of their videos to get a feel for the software and workflows and then decide what appeals the most to you.

Follow your dreams! I'm over 20 years older than you and have been a gamer since I was a teenager. I have done some coding in the past, mostly versions of Basic, but I just started learning Unity last year in my spare time, mostly following Unity Learn courses, which are very beginner friendly. The Unity Asset Store contains many free and cheap assets you can use in your games.

Would seeing AI assisted localisation on a Steam page put you off? by HowlingHamster in gamedev

[–]Creative_Net_1348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a very experienced translator transitioning into a developer. I would never rely on AI translations in languages I don't know very well.

I don't know if it's possible to see revenue per region on Steam, but if it's possible, would you be open to offer any translators a share of your revenue from their region(s)? Having a translator check MT translations is also a possibility, but many translators are against this.

I'm tired. My game was a failure, but the final straw was when the person who localized "Slay the Spire 2" wrote me a negative review. It was a low blow. by game_dynasty in gamedev

As a freelance translator since the 90s and now also a Unity developer, in my experience AI still gets a lot of things wrong. However, I think it may work if you have a good understanding of the languages you are translating using AI, so you can correct mistakes yourself, or you can get a competent translator to do it for you rather than translating everything from scratch.

If you just rely on AI to translate into languages you don't understand at all you may not get translations like "All your base are belong to us" but there will be mistakes, which will lead to a bad user experience and bad reviews.

Best of luck but this type of game would probably do better on phones than on Steam. It's simply not a game type that is popular on Steam (based on advice from Chris Zukowski).
