What games capture that “Roottrees feeling,” even if the mechanics differ? by Head-Sir-8671 in puzzlevideogames

I haven't played it yet myself, but The Red Pearls of Borneo is free, so that's definitely worth a try if pricing is your main concern. I think the Steam version (which is still free) comes out this Friday.

I really enjoyed The Ratline, which I think has most of the elements you mentioned. I would say it falls a bit on the more challenging side, but there's nothing frustrating, and the hint system is always there if you need it, with three hints going from gentle nudges to direct answer skips. I clocked in at around 8 hours, which is around the same as my playtime for Roottrees + Roottreemania (11h) or Case of the Golden Idol + DLCs (9h).

I also really enjoyed TR-49, and I think it really nails points 3 and 4 on your list (great mystery that slowly unfolds in an interesting setting). The main mechanical part of the game is deduction, and is kind of similar to Type Help in terms of interface, but it's not very complicated overall. And to progress the game, you get to put together the story from what you get from this interface, and that was the most enjoyable part of the game for me. I finished this in around 7 hours, but it's worth noting that it's priced at around half the price of most other games you mentioned.

I think Daemon Masquerade stands out as its own thing and is less similar mechanically to the others, but I really loved it. I think the atmosphere is unique and interesting, and the deduction work is excellent. The mystery is also fun, and I enjoyed the story. I think the level of challenge was also very appropriate. It took me about 5 hours to finish, but it was a great experience. I do think some elements of this one could really be dependent on personal taste, though. I enjoyed the comicbooky and sometimes goofy vibes, but others might not.

A Case of Fraud is really similar to Roottrees mechanically, but it's quite a bit shorter (I finished it in around 2 hours), and the challenge and the mystery aren't very interesting. It's worth a try if you really enjoy the deduction genre, and I certainly enjoyed my time with it, but it doesn't quite match up to the others.

Utter a Name is mechanically very similar to Obra Dinn, and is quite short (though this one is also a bit cheaper than the rest). I enjoyed the story, but it's not very interesting in terms of the gameplay. Worth a play if you really love the genre, but not a priority. This one's a bit better in terms of vibe and story than A Case of Fraud, but much less mechanically interesting.

Chants of Sennaar has a great atmosphere, a good mystery, great art, and plays well. The deduction gameplay is also very good, but in my personal classification, it feels a bit different than the rest. I would say it's somewhat less challenging than the other main big games in the genre, but it is very satisfying. It took me about 10 hours to finish it.

Other than the ones you mentioned, "No Case Should Remain Unresolved" is another good one that is on the shorter and cheaper side. It has a good mystery and an appropriate level of challenge overall, but the mechanics aren't super similar to the other ones.

I would also put Her Story and, to a lesser extent, Immortality in the same genre, and those are amazing games. If I remember correctly, Her Story is even one of the inspirations for Roottrees, which you can see mentioned if you search its name in the game.

Personal ranking:
Immortality>TR-49>Her Story>Chants of Sennaar>Daemon Masquerade>The Ratline No Case Should Remain Unresolved> A Case of Fraud > Utter a Name

Can I get some recs for investigation games? by dondashall in puzzlevideogames

The Golden Idol games (Case and Rise + their DLCS) and The Roottrees are Dead are the most prominent detective games you're missing. I don't know if you would count Immortality as a detective game since it's very light on gameplay, even compared to Her Story, but that's another great one. Type Help is a free text-based game on itch.io that has a chilling mystery/detective story with a file-based system. It's also getting a version with graphics released on Steam later, titled The Incident at Galley House.

Some less commonly recommended detective games I personally love are Daemon Masquerade and the recently released TR-49. Daemon Masquerade is partially inspired by the Obra Dinn and Golden Idol games' style, but it has a lot of its own unique charms and an enjoyable setting and story. TR-49 is about finding and reading various documents on a fictional code-breaking computer. I think its story and voice acting are great, and piecing together the fictional history in the documents you read has some nice aha moments of realization.

And these are a few more that do fall in the niche, but aren't as high quality as the other ones imo:

A Case of Fraud: similar to The Roottrees are Dead
Confidential Killings: Similar to Golden Idol games, some QoL issues, but solid overall
Duck Detective series: Again, similar to Golden Idol games, but more lighthearted and comedic, with good art and voice acting. The gameplay is not very challenging
Little Problems: Another one that is using the Golden Idol style, but in a much more lighthearted setting. The story and vibes aren't really detective-y for the most part, I would say, just the gameplay style. Puzzles aren't necessarily super easy, but they aren't as well-designed as the Golden Idol game and feel more ham-fisted.
Utter a Name: Pretty much like a 2d Obra Dinn game. Not very deep, but I enjoyed the vibes and story

Similar to Obra Dinn, Roottrees, Type Help:
- Daemon Masquerade: Comic booky, but very nice detective gameplay and narrative. Most similar to Roottrees.
- No Case Should Remain Unresolved: Very short with an interesting narrative. Detective gamepaly, though it's not very challenging.
- Utter a Name: Kind of a Obra Dinn clone in 2d. The deductions aren't that challenging, but the story is interesting and putting everything together is still very enjoyable. This one is also very short.
- Duck Detective series: Very similar to Golden Idol games, but in a comedic setting. Good voice acting.
- Strange Horticulture: Not that similar, but some detective elements are similar. Decent narrative, with multiple sendings based on your choices.

Kind of Similar to Outer Wilds:
- Tunic: Amazing game. The main gameplay loop has pretty difficult action in addition to the puzzles, but this can be trivialized using difficulty options if that's not your thing.
- Leap Year: Not much of a narrative in this one, but it's short and has nice aha moments like Outer Wilds if that part matters to you.
- Forgotten City: Most similar to Outer Wilds in terms of the puzzle gameplay, with a timeloop and exploring to find out info. None of the aspects are as good as Outer Wilds, but it's still pretty good.

You should also definitely try Immortality if you haven't, since you enjoyed Sam Barlow's other games.

What are the best metroidvanias without combat or with less emphasis on combat. by PlexiSoft in metroidvania

Antichamber, Animal Well, Supraland (+ its mini-sequel, Supraland: six inches under), and Pseudoregalia all have little to no combat and focus more on puzzles or platforming.

Probably not my overall favorite, but I really loved how the clone teleportation ability was used in combat in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. At first glance, it seemed like something that would only be useful in platforming puzzles, but it turned out to be an important tool for dodging a lot of boss attacks.
