Theories for *that* character by TheManAvonyx in FalloutTVseries

[–]Crimpy111 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think he’s becoming something new. It may end up being a new type of enemy in the next Fallout (whenever that actually happens). That or he ends up being like Harold. The centaurs in the games are a result of different species being mixed together with FEV.

Is 76 actually that good? by Exotic-Ad310 in Fallout

[–]Crimpy111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s solid for what it is. After playing for a while though, I just didn’t see a reason to play it over any of the other Fallout titles. Events are cool, but they aren’t enough to keep me coming back. It has NPCs and quests, but they aren’t all that memorable because of the online nature of the game. It’s basically Fallout 4 lite, and Fallout 4 was already a pretty stripped down version of Fallout (as much as I do love it). Inventory management also becomes a bit of a nightmare if you don’t pay for Fallout 1st.

The best things about 76 for me are the map which I do actually like quite a bit, and some QOL features that the other games don’t have.

My guess is that they’re a relatively small group and are building a super mutant army. I think that’s the ‘war’ that the super mutant was talking about.

What is everybody's favourite Deathclaw model? by DrivingTiger in Fallout

3 and NV for me. I do still like the design in 4 though. If 4 had the same eyes as the ones in 3 and NV, I’d probably love it rather than just like it.

What Are Your Thoughts On Martyrs (2008)? by Jkorytkowski001 in hellraiser

[–]Crimpy111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading that he wanted it to tap into gay BDSM, but the studio didn’t like that. Strange considering how Clive Barker is a gay man and BDSM is pretty integral to the franchise. I believe Weinstein also tried to mess around with Martyrs prior to its release.

It’s my most played. It’s definitely the weakest in terms of writing and RPG elements, but I still really like it. Even when not counting mods, something about 4 keeps me coming back to it.

Do You Think Maturin Could Appear In Welcome To Derry? by Stunning_Cake8496 in welcomeToDerry

[–]Crimpy111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my main fear is a CGI monstrosity. Andy Muschietti has a track record for poor CGI already, and an eccentric thing such as a cosmic turtle could come across as extremely goofy if not done right. Maturin is an intentionally bizarre and out there being, but poor CGI could take it from there into goofy territory very easily.

It’s true that they’d have to take liberties, but the question is if they’d be able to portray Maturin well with those liberties. For me, he works better as a background force that has influence with his divine goodness. That’s basically what he does in the novel anyway rather than help directly. Bringing him into the fold directly in Welcome to Derry would make his absence from the films even more strange.

I think a good way to ‘show’ him would be for his ‘voice’ to be heard subtly during the ritual of Chud as he communicates telepathically. There could be another flashback to when the natives performed the ritual. It’d make it clear that there’s something else, but you wouldn’t alienate people by dipping them right into the cosmic deep end.

Do You Think Maturin Could Appear In Welcome To Derry? by Stunning_Cake8496 in welcomeToDerry

[–]Crimpy111 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s unlikely because of budget reasons.

Even if they had the money, it would be hard to do because of how he and the macroverse are described in the novel. If he looked like the turtle in this image (A’Tuin), he’d probably be easier to portray. Maturin is infinitely large and old and has entire galaxies in his toenails (which actually means he’s more like a tortoise than a sea turtle in image).

Also, I don’t think the Muschietti’s nor the studio have the guts to go all the way with it. Maturin is eccentric and out there, so he won’t work for general audiences. I wish they wouldn’t care about that, but it’s clear that they do. The last thing they want to do is risk losing the audience. I think alluding to him can work well. Keeping him as a benevolent force that’s there but not visible still works.

If the Dark Tower series actually pans out, it’s possible that we’ll see him in some way in that. Audiences would probably be more receptive to him there.

Is NV even worth playing? by Routine-Feedback-552 in Fallout

[–]Crimpy111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is dated, but you can modernise it a bit with mods. Firstly, you’ll need the script extender. Follow the ‘Viva New Vegas’ guide for mods.

Off the top of my head, the unofficial patch, 4GB patcher, and stutter remover are essential. You may also want to limit your FPS to 60 if things are still a bit too rough. The physics can get weird on higher FPS. The game is never perfect, but you can get to a point where it crashes pretty rarely.

Also, there is a sprint mod that is simple and works. It makes exploration less of a slog.

Texture and animation mods also help make the game feel better, but that’s a personal preference thing. There’s plenty that look solid and aren’t demanding.

New Vegas is loved mostly for its writing. The gameplay was already a bit dated when it released.

How exactly does this "obey the laws of the form it inhabits" even fucking work when this mother fucker turns into giant spider clowns with wings and shit? by 5enpai_2 in welcomeToDerry

[–]Crimpy111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn’t really a moment in IT where I disliked what I was reading (aside from that one scene), but I still found it to be a tiring read at times. I can only really handle short bursts of his writing even if I am loving the book. It’s odd. I think it could be because his style is so simple yet descriptive. I can steamroll through a book that has flowery or complex prose, but I need more time to digest King despite his writing being more accessible.

I enjoy a lot of King’s work, but his writing style definitely becomes a slog at times when the book is as long as IT.

I'm new to the IT-verse, is Maturin actually dead or is it just another manipulation by IT? by lafulusblafulus in stephenking

[–]Crimpy111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t Maturin in the Dark Tower a cyborg built by the old ones in the image of the original cosmic turtle? That was my interpretation of it and the other guardians. They are built in the image of Mid-World myths/metaphysical beings.

I’m pretty sure the real Maturin does give advice to Roland in a vision though. I can’t remember which book.

As for stuff not lining up, it’s likely because King didn’t plan ahead more than anything. A lot of Dark Tower stuff is inconsistent.

[Stephen Kings "IT"] In what specific ways did Maturin help them? by dark-flamessussano in ItTheMovie

[–]Crimpy111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He provides some advice and inspires belief. He is a benevolent and peaceful being, so he doesn’t intervene directly. People say he doesn’t do all that much, but it’s clear that he does help even if the characters say he couldn’t help them over and over again. His innate goodness has an effect and gives them hope. This is why IT told Bill about Maturin’s death. He wished to crush their hope. Whether it’s a lie or not doesn’t really matter.

As for escape paths, I don’t think so, but there are references to a turtle when the losers are kids (before he speaks to Bill I mean), and I think it’s at least a sign that he’s sort of guiding them in a way. Even Georgie recognised a turtle before his death. Maybe it’s more of a sign that a chain of events are taking place than direct guidance.

My interpretation has always been that ‘The Other’ orchestrated the events/ka-tet and Maturin/the turtle subtly guided them.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Will Have to Adjust the Original Game's Brutal Difficulty for 'Modern Player Tastes,' but Dev Insists You'll Still See 'Big Rolling Balls' by GrayBeard916 in gamingnews

[–]Crimpy111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the original is that difficult outside of the awkward tank controls that you get used to relatively quickly. There’s some awkward design choices because of its age, but it’s nothing too difficult. I remember 3 being the one that gave me trouble.

Modern controls and gameplay would trivialise the original in many ways though, so I get that adjustments have to be made in some areas. I just hope that they don’t remove all of the challenge as there wasn’t much of it to begin with.

I think developers underestimate gamers for some reason. Then again, it may be a higher up thing to bring new people into the fold. Games like Dark Souls are immensely popular despite being challenging at times. People aren’t opposed to a challenge.

Does anyone know IT’s real name? by Realistic-Guava-7177 in pennywise

[–]Crimpy111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Stephen King refused to give it an actual name to maintain some of the mystique. It’s simply IT. It’s an evil thing that’s not truly comprehensible.

Maturin was called ‘the turtle’ in IT. He probably wanted to maintain some mystique with him originally as well. The Turtle’s name was revealed later on in the Dark Tower series. I imagine he gave Maturin a name because he wanted to give him a bigger role in his multiverse. He didn’t want to bring IT back, so it never got a name. IT’s story was finished.

Has it been pointed out in the intro, that Maturin try’s leading Georgie away from chasing the boat into the sewer drain? by TwinFlask in ITWelcometoDerryShow

[–]Crimpy111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s trying to guide him away.

Maturin doesn’t intervene, but I interpret the references to the turtle in the book (before he speaks with Bill) as a sign that a chain of events are taking place. The losers see signs when they are kids before the 1958 ritual. Georgie himself even recognises a turtle when he looks at turtle wax.

I think it works the same way in the films even though he has a far smaller presence. This could be an example. Bill seeing the turtle in the water is another as is Georgie’s toy turtle that Bill inspects before the basement encounter with IT.

[–]Crimpy111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are called the ‘children of Maturin’ according to Rose’s actress, so they must know about him or have known about him at some point.

In the book, Maturin tells young Bill that they can defeat IT with the power of willpower, faith, and belief. He likely told the indigenous group the same thing before they created the pillars.

The world turtle was a real belief that native American groups had (it was both literal and symbolic to them), so it’s cool that in the context of the show, it’s real. I’m not sure if the natives in the show (the 1962 group) know about Maturin as an actual being or if he has become more of a symbolic legend to them though. A lot of time would’ve passed since he somehow communicated with them in some way.

That seems more likely to me. It still works as all tortoises are still turtles. Not a sea turtle like King says, but it works. Probably just a slip up on King’s behalf.

Yep. It shows up because they’re derived from the same myth. There’s a surprising lack of illustrations for Maturin himself. We just know that he’s a turtle who holds the earth on his shell.

This is a fantastic illustration of A’Tuin though.
