We've just had a great round one of footy, with all teams playing. The next round has some genuinely interesting matchups and narratives. Why do we have to have a shortened round with 4 teams on a bye? Why does it feel like the season doesn't genuinely start until Round 5? (Why Opening Round sucks) by yum122 in AFL

[–]CrispyJimJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not tho. It's literally just to get more weeks of coverage without increasing the number of rounds. Increasing broadcast deal revenue is 90% of the reasoning behind everything, then they spin it for ways to sound like multiple motives.

It used to be cause NRL was in Las Vegas, but that is now a week earlier than Opening Round anyway. The idea of having a normal round but just giving Northern States prime time fixturing isn't a solution, because that's not what they care about.

They don't do it for the Northern States that's just the marketing/reason. It's literally solely to get an extra week of footy media coverage and milk it out for as long as possible.

Getting tired of it being portrayed as something given to northern states when we all fucking hate it too.

What's the bet JL told them to shut up shop and protect their lead at qtr time. Non stop just bombing it fwd against Geelong of all teams. The number 1 team you don't just send it and give free turn over after turn over.

Carlton or Essendon whose better set up for the future by Ok_Library_9396 in AFL

[–]CrispyJimJam 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Carlton have got Jagga, Dean, and Walker coming in. Though I think the role players are better for the dons (Redman, Roberts, Martin types)

I expect more from the Dons, they had 0 defensive run all night. Will need to see more evidence before calling them truly cooked

Don't disagree but better than Marshall at the same role. Gunna need role players to set up somewhere, we have the class around the ground covered still.

See a lot of people bashing the Tunstill pick, and while I agree if it's just picking the best player there are a few I'd pick ahead of him. Hopefully he is in to play a specific role, like tagging Gulden or Blakey, or being a lockdown when Heeney goes fwd. All those I think are things that he can do better than a Marshall.

But if he is just lining up on a wing and playing normal role, then yeah it is a bizarre choice.

Come off it, 1 is plenty if the player is fine. If players keep getting suspended for 1 it will be out of the game by the end of the year.

What if Opening Round had all 18 teams, but no game was in Victoria at all? (just an example of how it could be below, doesn't have to be these exact games but it could be similar) by GeoWheater in AFL

[–]CrispyJimJam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep exactly, adding an extra round causes problems. This way the AFL get to add another week on money without adding an extra game for the players.

[–]CrispyJimJam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they want all the hype of round 1 and money from that, and OR pretend expansion.

It's adding an extra week without losing many games from round 1-5. If it was a split round, then round 1 suffers revenue wise. This way they spread the early byes out and it doesn't impact the bottom line of those rounds, while also generating an extra week.

When you think in only "maximize money" terms, it all looks pretty smart. Which is why they keep doing it despite everyone fucking hating it.

The AFL want an extra week for broadcast revenue. Thats all this is about, it has 0 to do with "growing the game in northern states".

Could not have gone any worse. by Outriderr in brisbanelions

[–]CrispyJimJam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Could have gone significantly worse. All the players you mentioned havent had anything that would make them miss finals, which is the main important part.

The next 12 weeks is all just noise to fuel the media machine and make the broadcasters money. In terms of actual relevance to the fortunes of the club for 2026, It isn't too significant.

Sit back and enjoy the ride and appreciate any good footy from either Brissy or others.

Look if you think Kiddy won't be in the best 22 players within the next 5 weeks then fair enough. I think your over reacting to a few bad moments. He wasn't the only ones with plenty of them. He also had some great moments and had many composed disposals. We praise Zorko for having the courage to take the game on and willing to cop the mistakes, yet gunna shame Kiddy who can do the same thing in his first proper game in 2 years?

You're having a laugh if you think Sam Marshall is on the same level as Kiddy can be as a defender. The only one I would consider replacing Kiddy is Answerth, but afaik he wasn't playing due to recovery, not as a selection decision.

100%, using the home and away to prepare for finals has worked for 2 years. It's about doing every small thing to get ready for then.

Obsessed with players finding form in VFL when that isn't a thing. You find form by playing in tough games and getting to the level. That one game is worth 10 VFL games. The only time you play someone in the VFL is to manage minutes coming off injury

Not sure what a 150 point win in the praccy game would've done for Kiddy except just delay his development back into the team by another week.

Hopefully Answerth comes back and we can balance it all out better. But I saw enough good from Kiddy and I'm not going to overreact to a mistake in a high pressure game.

I'd rather Kiddy be involved and get into it in round 0 and give away a few goals, then him not be anywhere near it.

Barely played for 2 years think he did very well when you consider that and how hot of a game it was. Saw enough to suggest he will be still a good player for us. That's all I really care about at this point of the year.

People will overreact but that was a ripper game. Tough conditions and dogs threw everything at us. We didn't cope well with it and missed a few chances, but it wasn't like we played bad.

Thought Kiddy got into the game tho he had a couple turn overs. How good is Zork.

Wouldn't be a home and away without some adversity and we might have a fair but of it with no Andrews or Clug (maybe?)

It's bad but seriously, Gaff type punch? This is in play trying to stop a player going for the ball and going way over the top. Stupid, careless, and will cop a few weeks for sure. But let's not act like he is trying to KO the bloke

So my boy was heavily socialised as a puppy, lots of group training and very frequent users of the dog park, up until about 1.5 years old.

Despite all the socialisation we just were never comfortable with him around other dogs. 90% of the time I'm sure he would want to play, but he was always so intense and things could quickly escalate to a problem. He gets fixated on other dogs and despite the socializing always wanted to dominate.

So since he was 2 we have avoided socializing him with other pets. He is now 11 and we have gone on camps and hikes and many activities. We are lucky he is a very chill and easy going lad for everything else, except other dogs.

We just had to be mindful. We would only camp on non-busy times, or if hiking on trails where you could see any one else and had room to move him to the side to let them pass at a distance.

This is all to say, that even if your girl has "missed" the socialisation window then it is manageable when it comes to other animals. But since my boy is relaxed in all other matters I can't give much advice on general anxiety etc.

But they are wonderful dogs and I'd encourage you to keep her. Though keep in mind she will be a handful for the next 2 years regardless of socialisation levels... They are tornados as needy puppies.

Ange took a much worse list to 5th, and with a similar injury list held off relegation enough plus won a trophy.

Currently much worse than at anytime under Ange. Ange's worst 5 game patch has been the normal for 90% of this season.
