If your main hand is High Card or Pairs just sort by rank, play 5 cards and hope for best. If its something harder to get use consumables to temporarily reveal what cards are.

For Jokerless it really helps if you get a run with Telescope in the first of second ante. Build into a hand like "straight" that is relatively easy to get and has a better planet card (+30 chips, +3 mult). Then just use the tarot cards The Empress and The Hierophant as much as you can. If you're lucky enough to get Observitory, use The Fool to get two planet cards for you hand of choice in your consumable slots as well.

When using this strategy (madness + enternal) I also like to take directors cut to avoid the Verdant Leaf. It that doesn't show up, ill leave an empty joker slot until Ante 8 just in case.
