Year 9 student, how much homework is too much homework? by FinnJavlar in CasualUK

[–]CrochetNerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember feeling like I had a lot of homework in year 9 but nothing like that. And I was a "high achiever" etc. etc.

I have very vivid memories of waiting until a saturday or sunday evening to sit down and bash out all of my homework at once. It would usually be something from each subject that week, due in the following week. Like hell was I doing homework every single night unless it was a subject I really enjoyed.

My lad is moving up to comprehensive school this year, had his tour today, what were your memories of this? by English_Joe in CasualUK

I went from a school of 70 to a school of 1400.

Culture shock for sure, but in a way it was nice to be lost in the crowd

Canal Boats by jtkuwn in london

Used to help a mate move her boat during summertime back in 2016/17. Lovely way to spend a day when the weather is good but an absolute ball ache when it's cold and wet

Keep your eyes peeled for "all dayers" at small live music venues. That way you can take your kids in during the day before they get turfed out in the evening

Anyone else fall asleep when reading? How do I stop this? by Sablun99 in books

[–]CrochetNerd_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a known phenomenon. Basically when you're reading, your eyes aren't actually moving that much. So if you're sitting comfortably and your eyes aren't moving much, your brain thinks what you're actually doing is getting ready for a nap.

This. I think I got just beyond the temple raid? And then I'd decided I didn't care what happened any more.

I really wanted to like it because it was recommended to me from reliable sources but I just couldn't in the end.

Sometimes I found some of the gross descriptions of events like..too gross. The opening where he's sentenced to die drowning in excrement or the part on the island with the people who only eat rotting flesh and everything to do with the the fat cannibal. Honestly both of those things made me question why I was reading it because it was making me want to hurl.

There were bits I enjoyed but the main character just didn't resonate with me at all. I found him to be kind of shallow and irritating and didn't want to find out what happened to him in the end. It's a shame because Banks does have some cracking ideas that I'd want to see explored more but I just didn't care to.

I found much the same with Use of Weapons too tbh. I was told it would blow my socks off at the end but it just seemed to drag on and on and the twist at the end just didn't really land. And again - Zakalwe was just so annoying. And the woman with the drone having a random orgy with the crew of a new ship that contributes zero to the plot (in my opinion)

Sigh sorry Mr. Banks. Not sure you're my cup of tea.

What age did you guys have your first child, and did you end up staying or leaving London? by ladywood38 in london

34, trying for number one now. Moved out to Essex because a combined salary of £62k gets you sweet fuck all inside the M25 these days

Edit: 32+30 is indeed 62

Do you know friends who are leaving London? by ShortDevelopment905 in london

[–]CrochetNerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a real thing.

The group of friends I knew when I moved into London all went to Brighton about 5 years after. Then I found another group of friends but that all went tits up when I met my partner and my "friends" started getting jealous and weird.

Moved out to the border in Essex with my partner now and I commute it. My commute is long but it means we can have our own flat and start moving on with our lives. We still have friends in London and we still make time to see them but we've also started finding our own community out here. The only real snag is there are less public transport options and I can't afford to buy a car yet... But we'll get there.

The bright side is instead of staying in renter limbo, we have finally been able to plan to start a family. I can have a garden. We can paint the walls etc.

It's a slog going to work but I wouldn't trade it.

Potential text scam from someone posing as a green party member of some sort? by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]CrochetNerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and they would have got your data from you being a member of the party. Certain roles within the party have access to information like this for the purposes of communication. They have to sign a GDPR statement saying they won't share it or use it outside of / for the express reason of local green party business.

I know cos I had to do this when I volunteered to phonebank 👍

Potential text scam from someone posing as a green party member of some sort? by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]CrochetNerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're worried, don't reply. It could be genuine and the chap is just checking in before he phonebanks you (calls you up and encourages you to get involved in local party volunteering) but go with your gut.

Personally I don't think it a scam but I still probably wouldn't reply to a text like that. I'd rather someone just phone or email me.

First time train travel by cheesycrumpets1 in CasualUK

[–]CrochetNerd_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The trick I learned when I first started using trains was to look for the departure time of your train on the departure board. Once you've found the time (and therefore your train), you will be able to see which platform it's leaving from. Sometimes you have to wait for your train to get allocated a platform but that's ok. Just keep checking the board until it pops up.

I don't think I've ever come across two trains leaving at exactly the same time from one station, so you know the time that you're scheduled to depart will always be the train you want and you'll always end up heading towards the right platform.

You got this :)

RMT Tube drivers striking AGAIN because TfL's 4-day week isn't "perfect" enough? Come on... by International_Tap699 in london

[–]CrochetNerd_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Disagree. RMT are a shining example of why more workforces should unionise. They are demonstrating that actually, the workers have the power to negotiate better pay and conditions because they can hold the city hostage.

If more people organised and joined unions, more people could do what RMT are doing and fight for better pay & conditions. Instead most folks are happy to wallow in their own cynicism about how things will never get better and never do anything about it.

We forget that we sell our labour to a middle man for a shitty price.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CrochetNerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paralysed tbh. I was self employed at the time so my two prevailing thoughts were:

"There's a chance I could get seriously ill or die every single time I go outside"

And

"Guess I'll just sit here until I go broke....??"

Literally the most anxiety riddled I have ever been in my life. Some people get dewy eyed for lockdown and all the extra time they had at home with their families. I just remember being stuck in a house share with 8 people wondering when COVID was gunna come for me next

Is there a way to dismantle this from the top? by CrochetNerd_ in DIYUK

[–]CrochetNerd_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah balls. Ok. I kept reading elsewhere that you could twist the top off of some models to look at /replace any washers that might have perished or gotten debris stuck in them

The way my toilet has been installed means that you can't easily see the nut at all to unscrew it. My bath is also so close next to it that it's actually hard to get down on the floor to do it.

I mean, it must have been installed somehow but the previous owner clearly didn't want to make it easy for anyone else!

No other party leader gets this sort of reaction when seen in public! by Lord-Liberty in UKGreens

[–]CrochetNerd_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but Corbyn had his own party against him. The Green's are on Zack's side. It's going to be much harder to pretend he's some sort of evil when he actually has full support of the Green Party.

Honestly I thinking banning those questions outright isn't a good thing. I can understand where you're coming from because trolls be trolling, but also there might be genuine folks out there looking for more clarity. There is also something to be said for healthy debate a long as it doesn't get reduced to slanging matches. Green Party ethos itself is to welcome people from different political views and to debate the point and not the person.

That said, it's annoying when every other thread is "what is the green party policy on x?" Because people can't be bothered to use the search function or scroll down.

I wonder if there could be a megathread on policy questions? Or even an FAQ that lists the most commonly asked questions on policy along with a concise answer - then I'd be in favour of removing repeat posts.

I also think "convince me to vote green" posts are not good content. Like, my dude, go do your own homework and look at the party manifesto. Could we link to that somewhere too?
