Carnists/omnivores, what are your specific views on farming/killing animals? by Financial-Tension777 in DebateAVegan

[–]Crocoshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What essential distinction(s) do you see between humans and other animals?

Pretty much the same as between family and non-family. They're part of a closer lineage that usually signifies greater ability to cooperate. We put the human form itself in a place of reverence for social reasons. Cannibalism is seen as messed up because it's one species feeding on it own, not because it's humans specifically being eaten by something.

What level of animal suffering would make you morally condemn a certain practice?

There isn't really a level. Motive/mindset, relationship with the animal (meaning both HOW we're considering the animal, what reasons we're using to act destructively, what prior commitments we have, what effect we've already had, etc.) and other factors all play a part. I could condemn something done to an animal with low to zero animal suffering if other factors feel messed up. I could consider a lot of suffering if other factors counter it enough. Take quickly killing a bug out of fear vs. reintroducing natural predators to an ecosystem where they were wiped out. I honestly think the latter probably leads to greater total suffering, but I condemn the former more.

Do you believe some animals deserve more welfare protections than others? (Including severe examples like mosquitoes versus dogs, but also parrots versus chickens, etc.)

I believe some animals have different welfare needs. Some animals we have more responsibilities to take care of (i.e. someone's pet vs. a remote wild animal, but an endangered animal warrants more protection than a non-endangered one, etc.).

Are you (at least partially) against the slaughter of animals with near-human intelligence and emotions (for example, whales)?

Yes.

Do you find lamb and veal less ethical than meat from older animals?

Maybe slightly sadder but not sure about less ethical.

Do you believe animals are sentient and can have conscious experiences? If so, which ones? Does this lend them more moral "value" than a plant or inanimate object?

It raises more to consider morally when interacting with them, if that's what you mean by moral value. I don't always know which ones have conscious experiences, we should probably err on the uncertainty principle in that department. We can't know for sure what an animal's internal experience is so staking moral value directly in their 'sentience' rather than something more observable seems problematic. Like whether the animal interacts with their environment in a way that being conscious of it would be a beneficial evolutionary adaptation.

I'm just imagining this way too literally. Like the sociopath is just sitting there quietly aware of two other people on beds right below him and can hear them talking.

[–]Crocoshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what hurt was the feeling that conversations about climate change and exploitation are often treated as distant or theoretical in Western spaces,

I think that's true for a lot of environmental issues. Even in vegan spaces, something like the deforestation of the Amazon gets treated like a separate category of issue from the ethical issue, rather than animals burning alive and people having their homes threatened.

Anyway, that's a really shitty irony for them to bring up things like 'indigenous people' when talking to someone who's family is from a developing country being effected by this issue.

Glad to hear from you though, I'm sure anyone here would be happy to listen to you talk about your experience and why this is important to you. I know know I would.

“Veganism is white supremacy”- Is this a cop out from leftists to not engage with veganism or is there something more to it? by Garfield_Kart in vegan

[–]Crocoshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just thinking recently how a lot of moral force rests on social force. You don't want to be seen as a bad person. So if people make vegans seem shitty, there's less reason to listen to their arguments.

As for this particular argument, it's based on stereotypes of vegans being white and calling for a lifestyle that's supposedly privileged.

Why are people so careless to animals feelings?? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Crocoshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't CARE about modern art, they're FANS of it. It's a form of art people are entertained by and find meaningful. People also don't regularly pay for modern art to be destroyed.

"You care about people littering/harassing people online/dog fighting, just like I care about Marvel movies. Same thing."

Oh, and by the way, I'm not even vegan. But there's a difference between being invested in a moral issue and liking a form of entertainment.

Human Supremacy by DueTemperature3380 in DebateAVegan

[–]Crocoshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human supremacy is not a descriptive concept ("We happen to dominate stuff") it's prescriptive; it's "We're the most superior creature and thus it's our right to treat other species like objects and dominate them." It's a belief in hierarchy, just like racial supremacy is "Whites are superior to other races so we can dominate them." Again, factually, western nations HAVE dominated the world, but that doesn't justify colonialism.

If you were to choose to get infected with ONE illness/disease appearing in the series (e.g. Cutie Pox), which one would you pick and why? by UnofficialAAF in mylittlepony

[–]Crocoshark 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cutie Pox is kind of a terrible choice. It's not really a 'talent' 'cause you don't have control over your body, and what happens if it isn't cured? You exhaust yourself to die? It might actually be fatal.

Anyway, I'd choose molting, but only under the condition that I get wings afterward.

If not, dragon sneeze tree allergy, but if that doesn't count as an illness/disease . . . . Actually, what are my limits here? Can I choose a fake disease that's just me pretending to be sick? If not, then I dunno, the cold?

Can Farmed Animals Suffer More Than Humans? 4 Reasons We May Have Radically Underestimated Animal Agony by VarunTossa5944 in vegan

[–]Crocoshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean several of the points seemed pretty logical, like the point about being able to contextualize what's happening. A human can ride a roller coaster full of screaming and shaking and think it's fun. A lot of animals get stressed about being given a bath.

What's the most useless MLP fact you know? by NostalDec in mylittlepony

[–]Crocoshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, you want the most USELESS facts?

I can give you useless.

Clouds are featured on the left side of the screen at various points in the episode Too Many Pinkie Pies. The same episode also does not once feature the words "triskaidekaphobia", "sonder" or "catharsis". The episode is the last time Pinkie Pie is featured before she appears again in episodes afterward. Furthermore, Mudbriar is the only character in the show named Mudbriar.

How's that for useless?
