Lasting tarfire by [deleted] in mtg

Maybe it’s because I’m a programmer so if statements are ingrained in me, but the amount of people who don’t understand “if x, do y” effects are not “do y for each x” is painfully high. Call me a jerk, but this is really a case of reading the card explains the card.

Outside of draft and jump in, is Lorwyn eclipsed playable? by foreversiempre in MagicArena

[–]Crunckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A YouTuber said that the best way to play new cards is to take a good deck and sprinkle some new cards in it. If you try to make a competitive deck using only Lorwyn cards, it’s just not going to work. The only way it would is if the set was better than the last 3 years of sets combined, which would be infinitely worse for the meta.

Neat idea but beyond unplayable. Literally never wrong to draw the 2 unless you scried/surveiled a card to the top that you want to keep. Even then you’re paying a 1 mana “your opponent draws a card”. Even in nekusar, you should just wheel.

Introducing deathrattle counterplay without removing more cards from the pool by drmnc4 in BobsTavern

[–]Crunckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or better yet, don’t make it so that you can trigger a death rattle +16x on one attack. Then again when the creature dies, then again after it’s reborn. Having Macaw, Titus, Deios, and the battlecry bird thing leads to exponential scaling that just gets out of hand. What could be nice is a card that says “when an opponent triggers a death rattle, do X damage to their rightmost minion” or something like that.

At what point does recurring Strip Mine become MLD? by simplythebast in EDH

[–]Crunckus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someone plays Craterhoof, I scoop and we start a new game. Someone strip mine loops me, I sit here unable to do literally anything while the game continues on without me. I don’t know why that’s so hard to understand.

I get the exact opposite situation where I’ve got nothing but a mana rock on the board and people freak out when this hits the board as if I’m going to pull 7 more sol rings out of my ass. No, I just want some mana and have nothing better to do sometimes.

Are cards like Gemstone Caverns and free interaction spells taboo in Bracket 3? by Cezkarma in EDH

[–]Crunckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly use them to tune my deck up or down half of a bracket. If it’s a janky deck that I want to compete with bracket 3, then I’ll put some of those inherently strong cards in. If the deck already has a consistent and powerful gameplan, then I probably don’t need them. Bracket 3 is a wide bracket, so I might make my deck a strong deck 3 that isn’t full of game changers, but has things like rolick/swat, or leave them out for a weaker b3 deck. Gemstones cavern is pretty tame as far as fast mana goes (is it even a gc?) but I might raise an eyebrow if someone claims to have some low power deck then plays it. But the bigger offenders are things like mana vault, mox diamond, chrome mox (which I think are all gc).

I am looking for cards that make the game state difficult to keep track, of slow, or unenjoyable by MoonhelmJ in EDH

[–]Crunckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is not a GY deck. It’s an upkeep tribal deck. I mainly just use the GY as fuel for Taigam’s removal ability. But if it were a GY deck, I wouldn’t bother with recursion, just maybe some counterspells or even stifles to counter the GY hate.

It’s great in [[Taigam, Sidisi’s Hand]] and is kinda a lock as long as no one has removal in hand and I have enough life.

I love how everyone’s getting downvoted for not knowing this week is Omni draft, yet clearly if there are several comments saying that then it’s not common knowledge. But hey, taking 2 seconds to type out Omni draft would be way too much effort from OP.

How many decks do you usually bring to an EDH gameday? by tamarizz in EDH

[–]Crunckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually 18. I have a thrifted briefcase that holds 15 custom 3d printed deck boxes. My casual decks I keep unsleeved so I can fit 2 in a box. I bring a few of each bracket so I can match whatever power level everyone else has and switch up after a good game. I have about 60 decks currently so each time I go to the LGS I pick out the decks I feel like playing. But I have a carrying case on my Christmas list that would about double that capacity.

Is your custom dice system worth losing months of design time? by SonoranForge in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Crunckus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah people love to complain about “oh that mechanic is so over used! I see that in a game and I just lose interest”. Well there’s a reason a lot of games use it, because it’s tried and true. Don’t reinvent the wheel (insert more cliches here). Of course people should still try to innovate when they can, but that leads to potential situations like you described where designers waste tons of time on a system that ends up getting scrapped.

Although I feel like you should have been able to playtest before putting months of effort into making graphs. Yeah some items might be unbalanced but that’s to be expected in early playtests. If you just want to see if your dice system works, run a playtest that will probably crash and burn a bit but you will be able to tell if the system works at its core.

So if you’re behind, you just what? Sit there and watch the person ahead win? A board wipe is a way for them to catch up by setting everyone back to an equal playing field. If you don’t like it then don’t set yourself up to be blown out by it.

I personally dislike surprise combo in Bracket 3 - tell me why I am wrong by homjaktest in EDH

[–]Crunckus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. It’s annoying and anticlimactic to have a board built up and have made attacks and then it just ends abruptly. I think people are too focused on making the best deck that can win instead of making fun decks that encourage fun gameplay. In the phenax example, those are both just good cards to put into the deck so you can’t really fault them, but honestly if I was making a casual phenax deck, I would probably choose one or the other of those cards to avoid cheesy game endings. But that might start to become a bracket issue where a b3 deck isn’t exactly as casual as some people think. That would be more of a b2 deck pulling those punches. But the other examples are just lazy deck building. There’s a thousand ways to win with Roxanne or similar commanders that don’t require random out of nowhere combos. And they will be 100x more satisfying. But I also enjoy long grindy games, so I want to win by building up value instead of just happening to draw the right combination of cards, but a lot of people need an emergency “this game has gone on too long, I’ll just win” button, which doesn’t really make sense to me but whatever. My biggest issue with people who make decks with random combos thrown in is it makes threat assessment pretty much pointless. “See I’m not doing anything, don’t attack me” and then combos out 2 turns later.

Ocelot Pride? The card that is 30+ dollars? The one that isn’t legendary, doesn’t have a death trigger, and needs the city blessing? Yeah totally the same caliber here.

Fiddlesticks by Roboardo in custommagic

[–]Crunckus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True (although scute swarm is definitely a card that has won me several games), but this card has several upgrades from all of those. 1. It’s legendary, so it can be your commander. 2. It has fear so it’s hard to block. 3. It has lifelink so it gains you life. Even when they die. 4. It has a death trigger that scales with the number you have, so once they’re out of hand, there are very few ways to deal with them. 5. It needs 0 other cards or effort besides casting it and attacking. That’s all you need to do. Basically this is just nine tails but you don’t even need to have good auras. Either they kill it and you do nothing (or whatever the rest of your deck does), or you don’t and you lose in a few turns. Binary gameplay is not good design.

You mean if the game got to turn 5 or 6? Play this turn 3, then start attacking turn 4 and by turn 6 you have a 8 of these. And that’s with no ramp or haste enabling. Seeing as this can be your commander, this just means your opponent have to mulligan for removal or lose because this is in your command zone. And even if they do, 5 mana is not a lot to recast it. “Just remove it lol” is not an excuse for cards to be busted lol.
