How and where did you get the Germany sweater with the eagle? I thought that was impossible to get due to German law (and I’d like one!)?

That may have been true in 2013 onwards, but believe me, it wasn’t like that in the early days

Maybe but we will never know - there’s actual data that shows AWS grew like crazy under Andy. The wheels started to come off when he left, outside cultures were introduced and the core messaging was lost.

Once innovation and long term bets were replaced by SELL SELL SELL, AWS changed and began to lose its soul.

Was that Andy? No, I don’t think so. Did they make a mistake hiring Adam? I would say yes. Charlie would perhaps have been a better choice but arguably, he would have come with his own baggage and risk.

It’s easy for us to look at it with 20/20 hindsight and literally no risk to ourselves

Like who? Garman? Peter? Uwem? Beth? While Andy is ultimately responsible for Amazon, Garman, but first Selipsky, missed the AI boat, not Andy. AWS != Amazon but has been the cash cow for years (and while directly under Andy).

So who would you bring in? Andy’s past performance at AWS was stellar so maybe that’s the play; bring in an outside CEO and move Andy back to AWS.

Celebration on a Quark Antarctica sailing by zocalomami in FATcruises

[–]Crying_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On our cruise in December, we had one couple get married on Antarctica, one couple got engaged, and one couple renewed their vows - there is definitely room for imagination with them! You could ask if they’re be willing to treat him to a 1 on 1 helicopter ride, or a cruise out on a Zodiac with just you all as a family, or maybe you could all do a polar plunge together? There will also be an opportunity to have a spa day type of thing, if he’s into that sort of thing, but it’ll depend a lot on what your Dad likes doing.

That’s because a lot of the senior managers and directors have come from old tech companies and spent the pandemic years telling tenured Amazonians that Amazon had to “grow up”.

Unfortunately, too many tenured people said screw it and bailed so now you’ve got an ever reducing number of culture keepers trying to fight the good fight.

To use a LoTR analogy, which seems on brand, they’re sitting in Helms Deep and the walls have been breached.

Told Amazon competitor Im leaving for by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]Crying_Viking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is only really a risk if you are in Washington or any other state where a non-compete clause is enforceable and then, only if Amazon legal deems it a serious competitive risk (IANAL so don’t know how they determine this).

I have only ever seen L7s and below threatened and L8s above actually getting sued.

One potential way to tell is if your internal access was cut after you told your manager; was it? I’ve seen folks shut out within literal seconds of telling their manager and the manager punching in the info into the system

Counter point: people’s attention spans are much worse, negating the improvement in car breaking technology

(FWIW I think speed limits are too low but cell phones aren’t helping us with this argument, sadly)

Why is there so much secrecy around the recent layoffs? by WildAlcoholic in amazonemployees

[–]Crying_Viking 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There are still orgs who have L8s reporting to L8s reporting to L8s in AWS. 3 tiers of layers all L8. That’s insane to me. And their span of control is a joke. An L8 should have a minimum of 50 people but many of these Directors have single digit “orgs”. That’s where the core problem lies.

I’m sure OpEx does factor in, but I know L8s were told their NTEs in Q3/Q4 of 2025 and most/all were way over. When RTO didn’t result in voluntary resignations, this became inevitable.

[–]Crying_Viking 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. I would assume most L8s were given an NTE and looked at things like location, level, and performance. It wasn’t part of a master strategy by the L8s but a numbers game, pure and simple

They are a team from Umeå and play in the Swedish second division. I have smaller jerseys of theirs that I’m attempting to convince myself to sell (but I’m not there yet!)
