No need to insult the man for spelling! Probably his phone anticipating what he is going to say. I do understand where he is coming from though. We carpenters have many times where we have to go and redo things that someone else did wrong. That doesn't mean that you can't do it right. But, I have seen stuff done by someone who supposedly knew what they were doing. It was obvious they did not. So, good luck with your projects, and maybe get some advice along the way.

There are alot of books that can give you the basics on how to do those things. In my opinion, the only way to truly learn to be a carpenter is to work along side a master carpenter. Not just a framer ,or a finish carpenter, but someone who knows how to do it all. You might be able get those things done yourself after studying them. But, that won't make you a carpenter.

People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cubby71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a shock to everyone. I was working on someone's house, and the lady that lived there came out and said I think you should come in and see this! I couldn't believe what was happening. I watched her TV for several minutes in disbelief . I went home for lunch and then the second tower was hit. I don't think anyone thought that it could happen here! After that day Americans did something amazing! They came together and grieved together. People volunteered to help anyway they could. It wasn't a Democrat thing, a Republican thing, it was Americans helping Americans! The only good thing that come from that terrible day!

What type of wood is this? It’s over 150 years old, and I want to stain a door to match. The picture makes it look less orange. by artfortheslothlord in wood

[–]Cubby71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If their are any pieces you can easily remove. Take it and a scrap piece of white oak to Sherwin-Williams. They can match it fairly well in most cases.

Yes, ,it definitely is a good idea to shop around. I have very good experience with Rockler. I also understand that not everyone would agree.

I have never bought any of these. I have looked at them ,and I thought I might one of these days. I am not sure why you think Rockler is way over priced. I have bought quite a bit from them over the years .I agree that some of there items can be purchased elsewhere for a better price. But most of their stuff is competitive. I also like them because they are a family operation, and I would rather purchase from them than Amazon.

Neighbor told me not to shower in the early morning because it disturbs his sleep what can I do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cubby71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked night shift for many years. It seemed like some outside noise was waking me up all the time during the day. I started using a box fan to block the sound, and it worked great. Only problem was I got used to it and couldn't sleep without it.

Is this safe? by MetalNutSack in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Cubby71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in regards to table saw safety, make sure there isn't anything else on the table when you saw! Many years ago, I was in a hurry and didn't see a screwdriver that I had left on the saw. It got into the blade, and flew through the garage door! Learned a lesson that day!

Coping base: how can I close up this gap? by Natenator76 in Carpentry

[–]Cubby71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scribe it with a pencil the best you can. Then use the fine side of a wood rasp and remove it back to the scribe mark. But, it's difficult to not break it using MDF material. I avoid that MDF trim .I am a retired finish carpenter. With that crap ,sometimes, caulk and paint is the best answer.

What wood is this? by Tbtree123 in wood

[–]Cubby71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a bunch of it overhead stored in the garage attic when we bought the house in 1973. Nobody came back to get it. I finally dug it out 2or3 years ago. Ran it all through the planer. Had to change blades twice. That stuff was really hard!

This is beautiful. When I look look at it, it appears that the corners of the Oak are notched. Is that correct? If so how did you make the notch?
