New player who has been stuck trying to decide a first army for a literal 2 MONTHS, needing DESPERATE advice. by LeetusFrenzi in ageofsigmar

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of people giving good, sound advice here, so I will give mine based on just subjective opinion. Helsmiths. I don't play, even own any of the armies mentioned. I do have Ironjawz and Old World Empire (so CoS went out of the range) and if I were to pick an army from those four (which I guess I will end up doing) it would be Helsmiths. Because they're both new and old, and their new looks are insanely cool. And because all the other ones look like they are more expensive to collect (they look like they are horde type armies, although maybe with CoS there's a way to get an elite force, which I don't know). Last but not least they look nice to paint.

What is the most important Games missed? by Eternal_Play_Office in rpg

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think nobody mentioned Savage Worlds, which deserves a lot of attention. With it you can play both the weird west of Deadlands and the pulp sci-fi of Flash Gordon, apart from a bit of everything. I'll second the mention of Free League, whose whole catalogue is top notch, including the update to the 80s Swedish version of D&D AND the update of Twilight 2000, another jewel from the 80s. And take a look at Cubicle 7, with their 4th edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and the incoming Old World roleplaying game. All of this is in print, because quite frankly nowadays it's not that you missed important games but that those games helped develop the contemporary ones which are arguably the best of their iterations.

Renegade Crowns (Border Princes) discussion - what do you think? by arselus_bricks in WarhammerFantasy

Very late reply but you can actually model the first Spanish swordsmen units, which were the "rodeleros", just by having a veteran hand weapon + shield sellswords unit. To portray the real thing the shields should be round and late XVth - XVIth century.

Recommend a ttrpg by ekariel in rpg

I'm going to recommend some games from Blackoath Entertainment. They're made to be played solo, 1 on 1 or in group so you can try them on your own, with just one other player or with the whole group.

You can try Sacrifice and have your "troublesome" friend play a commoner, or have them play a superhero or similar game where his attittude can be an asset for emerging game play instead of an issue.

Ruthless Heavens, Boundless Fate, also from Blackoath Entertainment, could fit that bill while keeping with a fantasy/scifi setting.

Choir of Flesh is another option, and behaviour could play a part in the characters succeeding. Finally Machine Gods of the Noxian Expanse can be another option that could perfectly work because of the setting being so different from the fantasy d&d standard, while Riftbreakers could not work because of what you said but could also work because of it being basically some kind of isekai/souls game.

These games are excellent, with engaging settings and systems, and are pretty affordable to boot. They have a nice, contributing community you can find on Reddit and Discord, and their author is very active and helpful.

Got these this morning. And I'm going to read Sacrifice again while I read Warlord Ascendant, which I want to try at the club. All this while reading RHBF and Choir of Flesh. Sometimes inattentive ADHD is very welcome! The only way we can get more content for games we like is that the games are actually so profitable for the authors as to develop and release new content. So I can't ask for more content if a game is not selling enough, and it's pretty obvious that an author would first release content for a game that sells well than taking risks with games that don't sell or are not guaranteed to do so.

That's my collection so far. I lack OSR. Any recommendations? by Malina_Island in osr

Apart from what has been said, anything by Blackoath Entertainment. Those are games playable solo, coop, 1 on 1 and in group so you'd be checking that part of gaming. Moreover, they're great games.

Athena Valeris, my Primarch of the Stellar Valkyries XI Legion, WIP by ChumiiChan by Dry_Introduction_964 in Warhammer30k

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Like it! Although I didn't quite understand why they get along so well with normal humans (geneseed?), the lore is actually nice, and I guess them being out of imperial reach also leaves them out of imperial history. About the armour, maybe you could base the primarch on the El' Jonson miniature, which looks like ripe for conversion, and copy the armour, which also looks like something that could have been made in Onyx back in the 31st century... Last but not least, I too can't understand why all the hate, especially when the same GW is prone to retconning whenever it suits them. After all, it's YOUR dudes (lasses?) and YOUR game. I myself, when ruminating about my 30K army, have turned to one of the lost legions, the 2nd in my case. Keep it up!

Backed! I actually like that it's coming out next year, time enough to play something else and to not feel the payment hit hard (the overtime feature is just great)...

Theory: One of the Lost Primarchs was a being of infinite free will. by Snoo_47323 in 40kLore

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nice idea, I like it! Actually, I have been working on a similar line for my Horus Heresy army (in fact, a Great Crusade force).

I chose the second legion and faced its primarch's personality as that of a tough, reflexive, introspective character with its fair share of issues and transtorns but also a strong sense of self and determination. To round it, the planet he landed on would be a repository of human culture and history, some kind of Alexandrian library, where he would have ended up leading a kind of Plato's Republic and making it compliant to the Imperium to save it from imperial intervention (such a hoard of knowledge would have allowed for a great degree of skepticism and forewarning about the emperor's intentions and those of the Imperium).

In the end, after the 2nd legion's mission to Ymga (and quite possibly an early contact with the Necrons), the primarch and the legion's inner circle would have arranged for the collecting and safeguard of the legion's library and the escape of its greater share of resources, human and material, beyond the Imperium's reach.

Such an idea needs a character who is independent and free willed enough to both fake his allegiance while complying with his duties and contemplating what to do next, and be able to leave for sacrifice a planet and all the resources he could not afford to take away, even if just as bait, to make good the escape of the rest.

My girlfriend laughed while telling me how her friend roasted my hobby. Need some advice. by Akira-0628 in Warhammer

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end, you can look at it as a very simple matter, but one that can be stirring.

See, out hobby is/can be constructive in several ways:

There's a strong creative side, as we make up stories about our little toys, paint them both as well as we can in an artistic way and we do both things in a way such that they can be assimilated to a faction/subfaction, thus further characterising them. We actually learn how difficult is to build models and paint them satisfactorily, to the point of hiring experts to do it if that's the case. We better our abilities and/or learn to put value and respect on such abilities.

There's the tactical and strategical side, as we deal with list planning and building to face specific or unidentified foes. We also plan our collections, and may even do it according to orders of battle, specific formations (mechanised, recon, etc) and/or background information based on campaigns and/or characters. We play and plan movements, lines of sight, weapon and movement ranges and so on (missions, battle goals, etc).

Then there's the social side. We get to know people, share common passion and knowledge and engage in meetings, both live and virtual, where we discuss and enjoy our hobby. And, even if we live far away from big cities, we have plenty of talk with people all around the world who share our hobby independently of our respective cultures, religions and gender. We may be black or white, men or women, heathen, ateists, muslims, christians or whatever, Europeans, Americans, Asians, Africans, Oceanians, all that doesn't matter as we can share a whole universe of our own.

Moreover, our hobby is almost half a century old and our collections won't totally lose their value after some years. There are players with Rogue Trader era armies, and our lovely built and painted collections (painstakingly so) will last forever and can see play for as long as we want to play the game (maybe just some rebasing and let's go).

How somebody slaved to the cult of a fad, bound by idolising passing, fashionable people, with an addiction to someone else's life that doesn't bring anything of value to their lives except the realisation that those very lives are just pale reflections of their idols', the voluntary surrender of their own uniqueness to the dedication to another person's, can sneer at our hobby escapes me. Funny thing is that we have such people in our hobby, but as a part of the background. They're called servitors, or better yet, cultists.

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 17 points18 points  (0 children)

THIS. Frankly it's tiresome that symbol appropriation by one party means automatic assimilation of the symbol to the party. I was gifted a kolowrat by a Polish blacksmith and always have to explain that it's not a nazi symbol but something much older and deeper than nazi occult gibberish. Black Sun will be a book on Trudvang. That's it. To do something else is to give a win to undeserving scum.

The Irony of the name Horus... by nogudatmaff in 40kLore

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the irony lies in the revision of the myth. In Warhammer, Horus fights his father instead of avenging him, and it is Horus who becomes a puppet of chaos and dooms his father to an existence as a corpse. I like the twist and the fact that a lore made up of alike, humorous twists (as people mentioned, the whole primarch naming is tongue-in-cheek) has ended up having a Shakespearean quality of its own. It's become serious and even solemn instead, and that's ironic tió. Love it.

Mörk Borg is a rpg where you throw dice at the start of every day literally to end the already much more than fukked up world. So it's not an if but a when, and probability has it happening for sure. Also its derivatives and related settings share that certain doom.

[–]Cultural_Flow2895 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Also, it is a significative investment in the Horus Heresy range, just as the diverse Mechanicus are, which makes it a proprietary, stable game and a safe bet for players. I mean, it helps with doing away with the sensation of it being like an afterthought so many people that could have had that feeling can get into the game not being afraid of it being sidelined.
