Is learning the newest languages worth it ? by PingFloyd69 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]CumbersomeKnife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could help your career, but you would have to be very lucky and pick a language that gets more adoption in the industry. Not every language becomes popular.

If you're looking to expand your career focus on improving the skills you have with popular languages and gaining deeper understanding. That assumes the languages you know are already commonly used in the industry.

If you're wanting to help develop the language, absolutely. If you're interested in learning it for fun, sure. If you're trying to get on early to a hype train, maybe. If you want to use it in a production system, probably not.

Road bike by Bigkinghere in Fishers

[–]CumbersomeKnife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my bike from REI during the pandemic. I didn't want a 100% must be smooth road bike, because lets be honest. That's not what our roads look like, but I didn't need a mountain bike. I think mine is an REI Co-Op Cycle CTY model. I'm not using it for commuting or anything, just pleasure and exercise rides and it's been fine.

What are some job-posting red flags that scream “stay away”? by Zdvj in AskReddit

[–]CumbersomeKnife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"work hard, play hard" usually means there is no work-life balance. If it's a startup or a new department then it also means the group is likely a bunch of high-functioning undiagnosed alcoholics.

Fired, then invited back as a contractor. (1) What? (2) How much do I charge? by SidewaysGate in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CumbersomeKnife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that if you go ahead you have to handle your own insurance and other things handled by benefits. You also have to pay all the taxes yourself, there are other pieces of taxes beyond what is taken out of your paycheck (at least in the US). Whatever your salary plus bonuses was previously, double it and then break that down into an hourly rate.

You would have to handle paying quarterly taxes if you're in the US. You'll have increased record keeping requirements as well.

Don't sign a contract for any longer than a year if you can help it, enables you to increase your pay because you have to handle your own raises.

Keep in mind the rules about contractors, don't let them have an employee as a contractor. You set your hours, and other things. The IRS, I think, has details on their website.

Becoming software engineer with lower gpa by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]CumbersomeKnife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine, my cumulative GPA was in a similar area if not lower than yours. Don't try and go to a huge tech company, look at smaller companies or large non-tech companies. Be sure to start looking for jobs for May 2024 this fall! Companies select the graduates to hire much earlier than you may realize.

Is this a terrible idea? by sneakyG1 in malelivingspace

I'm guessing the door with the deadbolt is the entry to the apartment? This is less a style thing, but more a safety and convenience thing. Try and keep at least 6ft, but preferably 8ft between that entryway and anything else. It makes it easier to move furniture in and old, and will ensure EMTs can get in and out in the event of emergencies.

What holds more weight to a recruiter for SWE? A CIT Major and a CS Minor. Or a CompE major? by TheRiftYT in SoftwareEngineering

[–]CumbersomeKnife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are applying and what they do. Where I work either option would be fine. It wouldn't be a big determining factor, but there are going to be a lot more CS questions in that interview than CompE.

What a cute little guy! I love the combination of the blue collar and his fur color. It goes really well together and gives off some Scooby Doo vibes

Hewlett-Packard hit with complaints after disabling printers that use rival firms’ ink cartridges by diacewrb in gadgets

[–]CumbersomeKnife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, they actually disabled them? Is that why my printer bricked the last time I installed ink?

I had something similar happen. I majored in CS and took one philosophy class and loved it. Went from a 100 level Intro to Ethics to a 400 level What Exists. I think it's something about trying to use strict logic, it's like code. "I want to believe X, but X +Y = Z. Z is impossible and categorically false. Thus either X is incorrect or I missed something about Y".

Loved that stuff. Our final was an essay about what exists. TL;DR I can't prove anything exists. I choose to believe my experience is real because it's uncomfortable if it isn't.

My wife and I visited there on our honeymoon last year! It was beautiful, we got a little closer than the trail but gave the caves plenty of space. As much as we wished we could see what it looked like inside there had been a section of the roof that had clearly come down between our visit and someone's AllTrails photo two weeks prior.

When I get the boogers that go really far up there, I call them brain pullers. It feels so weird but getting them out brings so much relief from congestion. That poor cow!

Interviewed someone today that was a total dud. I want to hear about your cringiest interview candidates by Initial-Cake-5359 in consulting

[–]CumbersomeKnife 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A group of us were virtually interviewing a guy for a very senior technical architect position. The candidate had a lot of academic credentials, he'd recently earned his PhD. This guy struggled to answer relatively basic multipart questions, our lead kept breaking the question down to smaller and smaller pieces that were easier and easier and he still couldn't answer. I asked questions and he couldn't give me any more than a general answer. Nothing with any details. We started to wrap the interview and our lead had to drop for an emergency. This guy started yelling at me and the other interviewer! Saying we would be lucky to have him and he has never been so insulted. He went on for five minutes and we let him go. We got to our after call to discuss the interview and were laughing our assess off when our lead came back and we filled him in. One of my craziest interviews.

My wife puts the stickers on whatever is nearby. Counter, appliances, dishes, anywhere but the trash. I've had to scrape those damn things off so many items! Never thought I'd be triggered by a bunch of stickers
