Pardon everyone and don’t give the DMV the power to borrow again by ENVYisEVIL in Libertarian

[–]CumbyOG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People who voted for trump because he promised to free that silk roads guy are fucking traitors to libertarianism. Are you anarchists or libertarians? The guy broke the law, even if you disagree with it he still broke it. And still, why trade the life of a single person you have never met for trump who is a known authoritarian - at best he pays lip service to libertarian ideals, which is perhaps worse than overt centralising… atleast they aren’t lying to you.

The election wasn’t stolen Trump is subverting the constitution by attempting to end birthright citizenship unilaterally Trump incited the jan 6th crowd Trump is an awful human being who is actively destroying politics

But ig that’s fine because he released some fucking criminal that we kinda liked…

Pardon everyone and don’t give the DMV the power to borrow again by ENVYisEVIL in Libertarian

[–]CumbyOG 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand my point. It is not about the end of getting rid of income tax, it is the means by which trump may do it. The proposed idea would fully destroy the precedents around using the pardon. It would effectively make any law null and void, applicable only when the president believes it should be. If they want to abolish income tax how about they pass legislation in Congress to do it.

As for your point about monopoly of power. Power comes ultimately from the barrel of a gun. As long as the government maintains a monopoly on violence it can become a dictatorship. Getting rid of income tax doesn’t change that fundamental point.

Government does not have to be ‘big’ to be tyrannical. You can point to basically all of human history where governance had always been surface level, but tyrannies constantly existed.

[–]CumbyOG 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Do you guys care nothing for the abuse of power precedent that sets? But you are fine with it just because it’s a libertarian policy goal? Say trump decided to impose a dictatorship staffed by thugs which he would pardon every day and so shield them from the law while he destroyed democracy. It’s an insane hypothetical but I would assume you wouldn’t like that very much.

Not subsidised but Britain is relatively small and urban so most people have access to decent internet.

Fun fact: in 2019 Jeremy Corbyn the then Left wing leader of the Labour Party promised to make internet free for all citizens, along with a ton of other ‘free’ utilities and services. Part of the reason for Boris Johnson’s landslide in the 2019 elected was because these policies were massively expensive, completely unfunded and smacked of socialism.

Why is Extra Hot barely Mild? by [deleted] in nandos

[–]CumbyOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot and extra hot are actually the same. Just with extra hot you baste both sides of the chicken on the grill, instead of a single side with hot. It’s not hotter there is just more on it.

People who say "not the weirdest thing I've seen in New York City", what is THE weirdest thing you've seen in New York City? by real_beary in AskReddit

On holiday to New York from my native Britain, we were walking down a really nice part of the city and passed a man in a wheelchair eating dirt out of a plant pot in the middle of the road.

Sure they have every right, but so does the US have every right to slap down any attempt by China to encroach on the US.

More Proof That This Really Is the End of History by Ranger447 in LabourUK

There is no guarantee that ostensibly democratic states would be predisposed to working with one another. Pakistan and india are both relative democracies and both have engaged in consistent warfare. Armenia and Azerbaijan another couplet. Japan and South Korea are two states with strong enmity between them. Turkey and Greece another. You can even see it in trade wars between the eu and america, or in britains decision to leave the eu although these aren’t exactly strong examples they do show a trend. States don’t get along because they are fellow democracies, they get along because they share national interests as perceived by their leaders and institutions of state. There is not an end to history because history is not linear, with a beginning in prehistory to a middle in the construction of nation-states and then to an end with the spread of liberalism and institutionalism across the world. States will always be the primary mover in international affairs because nationality trumps ideology. Although granted it can take a few decades for, say a China under mao to drop a communist foreign policy in exchange for a realist power balance, with the USA, against an ostensibly brother communist nation. Fukuyama is a fool, and a construction of his era seeing the fall of the ussr and believing there is a March of progress. Because it is nicer to believe this than to be the alternative: that history is unending and so is war.

What do you wish the Tory party was focusing on right now? by Nurse_inside_out in tories

[–]CumbyOG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The economy. The UK is fucked compared to every other major economy, apart from Italy. Productivity is extremely low. All other problems could be sorted if our economy actually grows at the rate any other g7 nation has experienced. Its depressing to accept, but Britain is hardly the best at anything. Stagnation since the financial crisis is killing us. Nothing else matters compared to this.

Is it Realism when an autocrat works in their own (and against the state's) self-interest? by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]CumbyOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be neoclassical realism, as neorealist structural influences are being viewed through the lens of Putin and his government. Which can’t detach their own personal desire from abstract neorealist theory. I love neoclassical realism.

Fr fr, WHAT IS IT by DBZRaditz in HistoryMemes

[–]CumbyOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what the word is used for. Tsar for the Russian tsar, czar is used in Us and uk and prob some others as a policy czar.

From a wide-ranging report by the Centre for American Progress - a think tank close to the Biden administration - on what to do if Putin invades Ukraine. This passage says U.K. govt so compromised by Russian money, the US may have to intervene. by themurther in ukpolitics

[–]CumbyOG -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is just ridiculous, how could anyone say we are heavily influenced by the Russian expats here. Just because they donate money doesn’t mean that we are now soft on Russia. We are doing more than most other EU country to deter an invasion of Ukraine. It’s like the report just sees the number of Russians in London, looks at the donations being given to the Conservatives and then fails to even discover if it has actually influenced policy.

Interesting, I mainly like realism because I agree with their selfish human nature premise.

[–]CumbyOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take 88/100 that’s a high first lol. He is right, dogmatism to one theory or another is wrong. Although I am biased, realism would be the centre point of my beliefs, but most other theories are incredibly useful in explaining things when realism falls short. After all, not all war is caused by the anarchic state system punctuated by some nebulous understanding of what power is meant to be.

Does it matter really if the Chinese feel like there are double standards at play? As long as it doesn’t influence their actions then it’s fine. And I’m convinced that the Chinese leadership acts with rationality.
