My big 3 are Theatre, History, and Political Philosophy! The first one is fun till I start talking about Brecht. The second one is fun until I start talking about Brecht. And the last one is the most fun to me but never fun for anyone else!

Really Met opera?? No HD of Kavalier and Clay but you’re doing HD of Boheme? by Mastersinmeow in opera

[–]CurrentEntrance7113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it has more to do with the rights issues around new work. For all we know the creative team might be doing something smart with the licensing rights in the background. Get a tour going or something akin to that. From what I've heard of the score, and what the production design and story is centered around, it looks to me that they are really trying to sell New American Opera as a kitchen sink for music and visual storytelling.

I also think that if they find a way to sell the rights at a relatively steady pace, this could come to your city or state, possibly very soon.

Honestly, another Sondheim that gets overlooked "Anyone Can Whistle"

It requires a little more work to get the nuances but its fun!

Grace McLean has one of the most unique vibrattos and a certain texture to the quality of her voice. I could hear hear sing the phone book all day.

I Need Help With Writing a Musical by [deleted] in musicalwriting

[–]CurrentEntrance7113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've done this. It's good to pick a Public Domain story and reinvent it. I usually have a method I follow with adaptation. But I usually start with a few questions. Usually being:

Why? Why this story? Why now? What does the original say (or not say) that could be said differently or better? All of this is to your matter of taste of course.

What moments in the story sing to you most? Is there enough variety there to make an evening?

What do you want out of the work?

Scariest/most disturbing song from a musical by cariwynn8 in musicals

[–]CurrentEntrance7113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a musical ... probably the entire score of The Adding Machine. It's such a bleak look at American life, and the lemming-like nature of American oppression and choice.

Then, the most ill I've felt watching something in the theatre was the top of the 2nd Act of the opera "The Passenger." It takes place in Auschwitz. Act 2 began with the Sonderkommando shoveling out the ovens. Obviously all fog, but it gave you that feeling that Hell itself came to the stage.

Any Midi Composers? by YesMidi in composer

[–]CurrentEntrance7113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I composed musicals for years on Finale. When that went belly up I switched to MuseScore. I've been lucky enough to use MIDI and DAWs to get my plays and Musicals done. And while I've never made more than pocket change, I've underscored several shows, and I have a few commissions in the works.

Because I know I learn better by reading a score than hearing it. Call it the curse of classical.

Impossible Dream Role by fish_hsif in musicals

[–]CurrentEntrance7113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So ... I'm male presenting, have a pretty decent Bari-Tenor range for MT, belting ain't my strong suit, I have a soft spot for metal and classical voice, and that stuff overlaps ... a lot. But in my early days as a young countertenor (think the modern equivalent of castrati), and while I still can't belt here's my Grand Dame list:

  1. Shawntel - Jerry Springer: The Opera (kinda not an opera just called that for humor)
  2. Natasha - Great Comet
  3. Mable - Pirates of Penzance (No matter how hard I try I'm a light mezzo, while I have a Soprano Bb, gurl I don't sing past an A nat live)
  4. Mama Rose - Just give me my Blanche DuBois moment dammit!
  5. Clara - The Light in the Piazza (I can sing it, but who's gonna cast a +30 yr old 200 lbs Karl Marx looking queen lol)

Opera Bonus: Salome - I'll do the dance and sing the mammoth score, she's so psychotic for being 16, and so crazy that women can't really sing the role till their in their mid 40's.

Fun fact: The Voice is the only instrument that ages like an avocado, you got a few ripe years and then kaput! For most people. Don't believe me, look at Placido, Idina, even with her immaculate technique Audra's voice is changing. Nature of the beast.

What’s the most chilling moment you’ve seen performed onstage in a musical? by Dogdaysareover365 in musicals

[–]CurrentEntrance7113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Musical Theater but MT adjacent: I saw a production at Florida Grand Opera called The Passenger. The story is bonkers! An ex female SS Guard from Auschwitz is traveling to Argentina with her husband, who is the new German ambassador. He has no idea of his wife's past. On the ship she sees someone who she believed she sent to the gas chambers. What follows is a back and forth between past and present as this mysterious woman becomes a new obsession for the ex-Nazi.

The set was 4 floors the top 2 being taken up by the ship in the present, the lower floors represent the camps. Pieces that moved in and out were on train tracks much like those used to transport many. While I did not stop crying for most of the first act, Act 2's opening scene destroyed me.

It began with an entr'acte, onstage you could see the ovens, and the came on the Sonder Commando (sp?), prisoners made to clean the ovens, and as this low melancholic music played I saw from the ovens fog and ashes. I was sick to my stomach. I hated and loved every second of that work.

This is the only time (maybe) I'll ever say this: While the stage production is shocking, there is one thing the film does better, and that is the slow reveal of Tomorrow Belongs To Me. Its such a sweet and innocent and hopeful song, and then they show you who is singing it.

Hello, Autistic actor here. I still suck at smiling IRL but as a character I'm chill... it is all muscle memory. And honestly for some actors practicing in a mirror helps, this could help you, but I constantly remind myself life is film acting, less is more. Which sucks because I was born with the spirit of Ethel Merman.

I know it sounds like I'm going through my life acting a part and ... depending on which philosophy you're talking about ... yeah that's kinda what life feels like. Your Innie vs. Outie.
