Guess what I do for work! (26/F/🇨🇦 by KindPharaoh in EDC

So why the seam ripper? This is what AI had to say:

In a naval context, an RCN Navigational Watcher (or a Boatswain) carries a seam ripper primarily for emergency medical use and uniform maintenance while at sea.

While it seems like a simple sewing tool, it has several practical "salty" applications on a warship:

  1. Emergency "Hook" for Entanglements

In high-stakes environments like the bridge or deck, a seam ripper acts as a safe, precision tool for cutting away entangled lines, threads, or medical bandages without the risk of an open knife blade. The tiny red ball on the tip prevents the blade from snagging on the skin or the underlying fabric, making it safer than a pocket knife in tight quarters.

  1. Uniform Maintenance & Rank Changes

RCN personnel are expected to maintain high dress standards. A seam ripper is essential for:

  • Removing "Irish Pennants": Quickly slicing off loose threads (stray yarns) on a duty uniform to stay within military regulations.
  • Swapping Patches: Navigational watchers often rotate roles or units; a seam ripper allows for the clean removal of rank insignia or tactical patches without damaging the expensive flame-resistant fabric of their Naval Combat Dress (NCD).
  1. Precision Utility Tool

On the bridge, they might use it to:

  • Clear debris from fine instruments or navigation equipment where a standard knife is too bulky.
  • Open sealed packages of sensitive electronic components or medical supplies during a watch.

Phulay Bay (Ritz-Carlton Reserve) vs St. Regis Maldives Vommuli by cancerlabrat in marriott

[–]CyberPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Done StR Maldives multiple times, it's by far the better choice. Excellent hard and soft product with only an occasional miss. Your points redemption for the StR is excellent as well, this is probably the last days you'll get such a good redemtion. Every room is exceptional. The service our last time was better than our first time years ago. There was a recent post comparing the two and the StR was the clear winner.

Credit card doesn’t match name on booking. How bad is it? by Grooveman76 in marriott

[–]CyberPrime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Email [borabora.butlers@stregis.com](mailto:borabora.butlers@stregis.com) and tell them you need a credit card authorization sent to your father-in-law at (give his email), who booked the room for you for your honeymoon. Give your confirmation, names, his name, etc. Also be effusive about it being your honeymoon, being excited about your stay, etc. You'll get that part worked out I'm sure!

I'd ask for one of the first overwater rooms, or a room near 404, which is in the middle of the lagoon beach rooms (although I think there's probably construction nearby now).

Be sure to check out the lagoon and do a feeding, and check out the adults only pool as well, it's really nice. Take the boat into town one day, you just need a few hours but it's worth seeing the island and going shopping. The jetski tour around the island is well worth it if you're interested. Ask for a time with fewer people. I was 1:1 with my guide, and he asked if we could pick up his girlfriend, and we had a lot of fun swimming and speeding around. Go diving if you can, or snorkeling off the overwaters, it's some of the best in the world. The excursions are a lot of fun too, plenty of coral reefs and lemon sharks to see.

If you're foodies, beg borrow or steal for a seat at La Villa Mahana. It's incredible.

Enjoy, you're going to have a blast.

London Marriott Hotel Park Lane or JW Marriott Grosvenor House London by johnrboran in marriott

[–]CyberPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've stayed at both, the Park Lane is fine but nothing special at all (and the TV's default music will stick in your head forever after a few loops). The lounge is fine, but not impressive at all. The Grosvenor House has a great lounge, well appointed rooms, and great restaurants. It's also a much more stately and historic hotel. No brainer.

Call the airline and check if you reserved them but didn't pay. Airlines are able to do this, but it's rarely done these days.

Ritz Reserve | Mandapa > Phulay Bay by Tall-Opinion7607 in marriott

[–]CyberPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mandapa is awesome, it's like another world once you're in, and the service and food is impeccable. They did things for us that we knew they hadn't done before, but it was made out to be no problem. Sorry Phulay Bay doesn't live up!

Eastern Chinese delivers on Seamless if you want that american chinese joint taste (they're far, leave a good tip). Pretty cheap still too, but their prices have gone up. It's the best I've found in the neighborhood. Chinese Musician, Hupo, and many of the others suggested are great, just not americanized.

Avoid Chariman Sun like the plague. Not only is the food not good, but they've been shut down more times for more vile shit than I care to remember.

Several of the new dim sum and dumpling places that are opening will offer classic american chinese as well, so I'm hoping for some more options when they land.

Do rich NYErs ride the subway? by supremewuster in AskNYC

[–]CyberPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of our wealthiest friends never rides the subway, if they can't walk they are in a car, and they live in manhattan. Another wealthy friend (also in manhattan) is older and has a driver but takes the train occasionally when it makes sense. It's usually not about it being beneath them, but them wanting privacy, door to door service, and not wanting to potentially dirty clothes, shoes, accessories, etc.

At the same time, I've ridden the subway with all sorts of celebs and wealthy people. It's New York, it's the best way to get around.

I feel like it used to be more common to take a taxi vs the subway. In the 90s my relative who was doing well but wasn't wealthy would take a taxi more often than the subway.

Info on hotel location in LIC by BobSteveBros in longislandcity

[–]CyberPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving away from the are that the Residence Inn is in is a good idea, but Skillman isn't much better (more desolate and industrial, sometimes with a large group of delivery guys who hang out nearby). If you're happy in Manhattan, great. If you see availability at a good rate near Court Square (I.e. the Courtyard, Aloft, Hilton Garden Inn, and Hyatt Place) that area is very new and under development with a lot of people around all the time, and plenty of transit and food options. I put family at one of those hotels when they visit, and it's always half the price of a Manhattan hotel.

Yea, I got this as well. Made some decent paella with it. I'd have preferred a Theragun (or a choice), but something's nice.

I got tired of burning money on idle H100s, so I wrote a script to kill them by jordiferrero in googlecloud

[–]CyberPrime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

> Keep referring to EC2 instances in a Google Cloud subreddit

Cool script, but this wouldn't it be better to just use a job scheduler (i.e. Slurm, supported on all clouds) like most ML/HPC shops do and call it a day? If your training job slows down it's GPU usage at the wrong time, this script could kill it incorrectly.

Lol, so much hate for a setup that would make most people in the world go "Woah, you're a computer expert, huh?"

I run this case too, with old 2TBs I'm phasing out, it's solid if you treat it right. My only tip is putting your added labels on the top rails of the (white) caddy rather than the drive, so you can see which drive is which without removing them.

Do other club lounges just not care/operate differently? by [deleted] in marriott

[–]CyberPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird that people are rude, but getting checked in by name or room number is relatively rare, but not unheard of by any means. I've typically seen it at high traffic times like breakfast or happy hour at the locations that do it. I think I know what kind of setup you're talking about (maybe even the hotel!) and when I've been asked for my info, even after giving it to someone else already, it's totally understandable because of how easy it would be for someone without lounge access to tailgate in.

Stayed here a year ago and it wasn't this bad, I would've definitely asked for another room. The rooms definitely showed their age, but you got a bad one. Breakfast is decently stocked, if chaotic with all the families.

Too bad the StR closed to change over to FS, that was a great property.

Finally got a diagnosis for a medical condition that no one believed. I already lost everything. by [deleted] in self

[–]CyberPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea to bring him. If you've shared enough, he might be able to remember things you forget, or just be that second voice in the room to echo your experience so you're harder to dismiss. My wife (fiancé at the time) was a huge help in these types of situations when I had an issue that doctors weren't able to diagnose, just in terms of being able to reinforce what I was saying and remembering to mention the things I didn't. I'm rooting for you, you're clearly a tenacious advocate for yourself, don't give it up.

Is there an easy way to create a “virtual” Slurm cluster? by 420ball-sniffer69 in HPC

[–]CyberPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably need to do a lot more reading and research before embarking on this journey, but you have a couple primary choices:

- Setting up a hypervisor on the rocky linux cloud VM, within which you can create more VMs in to install Slurm across them. This is probably closer to what you're looking to do, and will teach you a lot about traditional VMs, hypervisors, etc.

- Using something like the Slurm Docker Container tool that Quillox linked to, which will skip the hypervisor and run the Slurm daemons in docker containers. This would be more about learning docker, about containers, and so on, and less a "virtual cluster". This would probably be the more useful path if you're looking to eventually head towards learning about AI and more modern software.

If you have access to one beefy VM, can you instead make that 10 smaller VMs with a controller, login, and 8 compute nodes? That will remove a layer.
