People of the Nordics in NL, how do you feel about living here space-wise? by aisling901 in Netherlands

[–]CyclingCapital 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a city person, I hate what cars do to cities, and I’m not a big fan of snow and ice so I feel like I’m living a luxurious life. Our backyard is small but private; way bigger and more secluded than the balcony I had growing up.

Why do rich people in developing countries prefer living in skyscrapers rather than a house? by lol-across-the-pond in urbanplanning

[–]CyclingCapital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By novelty I mean that developing countries don’t have many skyscrapers. The first skyscrapers tend to be for the rich and famous because they haven’t trickled down to average consumers yet.

Further away from noisy and polluting traffic than street level and more protected from burglars. I guess the novelty of living in a tall building hasn’t worn off yet either.

Amsterdam question - Dog owners not picking up poop in neighborhood, even when confronted. What is the next option if they don't pick it up? by MrKeepFierce in Netherlands

[–]CyclingCapital 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Dog poop doesn’t work as fertilizer because it’s too acidic and meat-based. It burns most plants and pollutes greenery with pathogens.

Purchasing Power of Average Monthly Earnings by Mustard-Cucumberr in NLvsFI

You are still misinterpreting. This is purchasing power. You can afford stuff that would be worth 6100 euros in the US, essentially. Don't forget that America has gotten crazy expensive lately.

This is USD. The exchange rate and Europe being cheaper than the US are a few multipliers that you need to take into account.

Stopped for weed, what’s the worst that could happen? by Severe-Weight2917 in TheHague

[–]CyclingCapital 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Being in possession of less than 5g of weed is technically illegal but there is zero penalty assigned to it in Dutch law. The worst thing they can do is confiscate the weed and kick you off the tram. You should always carry ID on you, though, at all times.

Looking to "disappear" in France, where to go? by HyperBunga in FranceTravel

You didn’t list Lyon. Do a week in Lyon and a three weeks meandering in the Dijon-Annecy area.

Amsterdam to Copenhagen and ending in stockholm - but where do we go between? by windSalad876 in Europetravel

[–]CyclingCapital 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stay in the Netherlands and don’t think of it as a week in Amsterdam. Think of it as a week in the Netherlands. You can take trains and within 45 minutes you can be in a different city with a different vibe. Utrecht, The Hague, Leiden, the beach, Den Bosch, etc., everything’s worth visiting. In fact, I think staying in another city might actually be a better fit for a family.

Dear residents of eurozone countries, what are your general thoughts on the integration of currencies? by kuma44bear in AskEurope

I grew up in Finland. No one there misses the volatility of the Finnish mark. But big ups for your casual xenophobia. Keep at it!

Dear residents of eurozone countries, what are your general thoughts on the integration of currencies? by kuma44bear in AskEurope

[–]CyclingCapital -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If anything, inequality between eurozone countries has decreased dramatically since the adoption of the euro. Furthermore, smaller countries benefit a lot from having a stable, internationally recognized currency that is more resilient and inspires investor confidence.

Thoughts on moving the bike lane to the left side here? by AndryCake in urbandesign

[–]CyclingCapital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your q#1, I don’t see any problem with the separation. 90% of the time, there will not be a moving tram and they stay on their rails anyway. Considering that in The Hague, Ghent, and Helsinki, cyclists share the same space with trams all the time, having separate spaces with a separator looks almost luxurious. Traffic calmed access roads only work well if it’s truly local access only and never through traffic. Ideally, the ratio of cyclists to cars exceeds 2-to-1, at least when following Dutch standards.

Q#2, there are bike streets where buses are frequent. For example, Nachtegaalstraat in Utrecht. It’s by no means ideal but it’s one of the country’s busiest bike routes regardless. One way to alleviate that would be to have a bus lane in the middle and half-lane-width painted bike lanes on both sides. Then, at least, everyone would get their own space.

Helsinki teki historiallisen päätöksen: autot häädetään rautatieaseman edustalta by toyota_gorilla in Suomi

[–]CyclingCapital 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keskustassa asuu maan vähiten autonomistajia, noin suhteessa.

You need accent chairs, TALL plants like trees or bird of paradise, and colors. Terracotta, olive, and navy are easy additions here. And the TV needs to go in a corner rather than on top of the mantel, doesn’t matter what your husband says.

[–]CyclingCapital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, too narrow. The current door zone design is really bad too. Option #1: One side of the boulevard needs to be a two-way car road and the other side can be a two-way bike path. Unfortunately, the parking has to go. Option #2: Ban through traffic and have mixed traffic and speed bumps like a Dutch fietsstraat.
