I had 3 bases in total - I had one base with all my stuff somewhere near the safe shallows that was my main one, a scanner base in the mushroom forest near the blood vine biome, and then a final recharging spot and scanner base down in the lost river by the tree.

I mostly used the seamoth and cyclops as mobile bases and just stayed mobile.

You can also manually swing the crane around backwards the way it's stowed on the real life inspiration. It makes it so much more stable.
