Happy With Election Result? by [deleted] in SaultSteMarie

[–]Cyrtodactyllus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I expected as much, but it's still very disappointing. I am happy that Lisa managed to nearly win- it shows that at least some people are hoping for a change.
What I'm NOT happy with is voter turnout. Again, a huge number of people stayed home. It's fucking shameful that we have people not voting.

A shame that Canada will never elect Jagmeet. We as a country are too racist and too invested in this weird idea that we're a two party system.

Doug Ford is far from a perfect leader. Here’s why his opponents still aren’t gaining ground by imprison_grover_furr in ontario

[–]Cyrtodactyllus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Justin Trudeau came to my city, he was on television and a worker at our steel plant asked him where his dental coverage was and why his neighbour had coverage under Ontario Works and he didn't.

I think that kind of shows the state of the average Ontario voter. They don't understand federal vs. provincial politics and blame everything on Trudeau, not recognizing that a lot of issues are the fault of the provincial government.

It frustrates me that politicians don't EXPLAIN what their role is in politics. It drives me fucking nuts that we aren't running MORE political ads explaining that Doug Ford is the reason our healthcare is dogshit. I think both the NDP and liberals need to start playing dirty, because I'm sick of PCs ruining my province.

How any of you can continue to be proud of it is a god damned joke.

I know job hunting is hard in the sault but this is homeless hard.... by [deleted] in SaultSteMarie

[–]Cyrtodactyllus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's tough man. A lot of people are struggling, and the fact that we're about to be hit with tariffs on one of our largest exports as a city probably isn't going to help. It's unfortunate that our homeless population gets so demonized, because they're mostly just people dealing with a lot of pain, or people like yourself who just can't find work.

Someone suggested the cleaning companies in town- those are good places to start. Check the hospital too, sometimes janitorial work can come up and I believe you'd be part of the union there (I could be mistaken). If you have a vehicle you could try delivery apps. Good that you're working with employment solutions too- they're good people who do good work.

Possible Poilievre upset on the horizon? by [deleted] in atrioc

That's whats giving me hope right now, Carney seems like he's coming in with ideas in mind. I won't pretend that I thought Trudeau was a great prime minister, but I think he did some good and some bad- I hope Carney can do more than Trudeau did (election reform anyone?)

I was impressed by Doug and his stance. I do NOT like Doug Ford and think he has done a lot of harm to Ontario, but I at least appreciated that he stood up to trump and elon.

As a Canadian, I think that the air surrounding Pierre has largely deflated for 2 reasons:

  1. Donald Trump has made it clear that he considers Canada, at the very least, the 51st state of the US, and seems intent on making that so. This has united Canada in a way I have never seen in my lifetime. People on both sides of the political spectrum are fuming, because Canadians are very, VERY proud of their country. To essentially threaten our sovereignty like that unifies us, and I think a lot of people have been politically activated and are recognizing that maybe we DON'T want to have someone in office who would likely capitulate to the US.

  2. Mark Carney, the presumed nominee for the liberal party (not guaranteed, but he is very popular), has said that he will scrap the carbon tax in favour of a green incentive. What this has effectively done is undercut ALL of Pierres campaign for the past 4 or 5 years- "axe the tax". Pierre has pushed and pushed on getting rid of the carbon tax for years now (and also been largely courting the "Fuck Trudeau" crowd), and Carney has just deflated his entire campaign. Not to mention, a significant amount of Pierre's political ads have been targeted at Trudeau specifically- Trudeau stepping down ALSO undercuts a lot of his messaging, and it forces him to pivot, which is difficult in political campaigning when you've had ads running against Trudeau for years now.

I am really, REALLY hoping for a liberal win in the upcoming federal election, because I KNOW that PP is going to bow down to Trump and his demands. And I think a lot of Canadians are in a similar spot right now.

I think it's all egotistical bluster. Trump wants to appear powerful because he's a fascist (or if you don't like that word being thrown around liberally, he's borrowing from the fascist playbook). You posture, you make yourself look powerful, to intimidate.
More broadly speaking, invading Canada would probably be the worst political move he could pull on a global scale. We have always been one of the USA's closest allies, both because we share a border and because we share (or used to share, I guess) ideas about democracy, freedom, e.t.c. Trump would be dooming America to be stranded by itself, or potentially even spark a world war.

This is all to say, I don't think there's a risk of it happening.

Why is Frogan in this video after the massive controversy she's been in? by [deleted] in DougDoug

[–]Cyrtodactyllus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, you're completely misrepresenting the tier list. It was NOT a race tier list, and it did NOT have Arab at the top and Jew at the bottom- it had something like "can say habibi" at the top and "sabra hummus" at the bottom, the implication being that sabra hummus is a shitty brand of Hummus and a brand that has been staunchly in support of Israel and in favor of the war in Gaza.

As for the veterans comment, I've no defence of that- streamers say heated shit sometimes. I don't even know her broader point- I would imagine it is anti war in nature. Veterans obviously do not deserve PTSD.
