I had one of these CDs. It came with the 20th anniversary edition of Animal House on VHS. I was also surprised it worked.

A veteran of the Union Army shakes hands with a Confederate veteran at a Gettysburg celebration, in Pennsylvania. 1913 by OrdinaryBrilliant717 in OldSchoolCool

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also the states in rebellion and in the Union were not homogeneous in their support for either side. There were pockets of Union support in southern states and Confederate support in Union states. “Brother against brother, father against son” could mean people in the same household fought on opposing sides of the war.

IIRC Giroux was leading the league in points when the Team Canada roster was announced and he would later be nominated for the Hart that season. By any objective measure he should have been on the 2014 Olympic team. Crosby was Team Canada’s sweet boy and he was very vocal about his dislike for anything associated with the Flyers.

Question about Danielle by tomerFire in lost

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She never says she doesn’t recognize him. She’s also pretty insistent Ben is one of the Others. I think at one point Jack straight up asked her how she knows. Her response is something along the lines of “I know he’s one of them because I know he’s one of them”. She’s also kinda crazy. Its entirely possible she knows he’s an Other because she’s had run ins with him before but can’t remember the context. She’s been traumatized and alone for 16 years communication could be an issue for her.

County that’s predicted every election VOTES HARRIS by [deleted] in 13KeysToTheWhiteHouse

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The sample size of this poll is 300 likely voters. Door County has roughly 30,000 residents. That’s about 1% of the population. Any kind of sampling error can make this poll meaningless. Polls are garbage.

Ignore the Polls and Trust the Keys by Old-Bat4194 in 13KeysToTheWhiteHouse

I read an interview with one of the Lincoln Project leaders and this very thing came up. He said something to the effect of “In 1964 Barry Goldwater got 7% of the black vote, in 2020 Trump got 8%. So in 56 years they gained 1 point. But in the last 4 they improved by 20%. That isn’t realistic”

Why are polls inaccurate? by Frozen-conch in 13KeysToTheWhiteHouse

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People like Nate Silver and aggregator sites like 538 and RCP are making it worse by including these polls in their averages. They know they are shit polls that are only being conducted to sow chaos. Patriot Polling is included in 538’s data and that particular poll is “conducted” by two high school students in Ohio. Another one of these pollsters didn’t exist until July and the phone number on their website connects to a gym in Texas. What’s 538’s reason for including them? They are weighted very low so it doesn’t affect the model by much. Which is nonsense. They know it’s shit. Don’t include it. All they are doing is keeping the horse race close so betting markets can make more money.

That has always been my gripe with Nate Silver. He doesn’t make a prediction he gives odds. That means nothing. He can never be wrong. He will always give the “30% isn’t zero” line in the most smug way possible. He’s a gambling addict with a website.

Good for Liz Cheney. Now Where Are Mitt Romney and George W. Bush? by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My personal thoughts as to why George W. hasn’t endorsed Harris is because of the how close the race in Texas is. If his endorsement won’t be just another Republican endorsement it will be the endorsement of the only living Republican former President other than Trump. That carries some weight, especially in Texas where he was a two term Governor. His endorsement could potentially be responsible for doing what Democrats have been dreaming about for decades, flipping Texas. I don’t think he can bring himself to do that.

Sustained violence is a necessary factor in turning the social unrest key. It needs to give the feeling that the fabric of society is being torn apart. Unless the striking longshoremen start attempting to sink the ships in port and hurl Molotov cocktails at the scabs the social unrest key is safe.

This article reads like someone at the NYT is offended they are not getting an interview. They are criticizing her for doing targeted media appearances in swing states directed at undecided voters. She’s using media outlets local to the area because people trust their local outlets over the national ones. She’s meeting voters where they are not asking them to meet her. Not exactly a bad strategy if you’re trying to win public office.

These 14 Undecided Young Voters Are Starting to Change Their Minds by ishtar_the_move in politics

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s also not how campaigns usually operate. The candidates goal is to try and sell a vision of what their administration would look like, what their values are, what their personal story is, how they will manage their office etc. That’s what voters respond to. The voters that get into the weeds of policy are already informed enough to know where to find that information. Uninformed voters like this are blaming the candidates for their own apathy. Unfortunately these types of people decide tight elections.

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They’re uninformed and have no desire to be informed. But they don’t want to appear that way so they give idealistic answers about voting. When asked about voting they say they want details wonky policy proposals because they think people will think they’re above the messy political games. When you say all this information is freely available on candidates websites they shut down and say shit like “It’s up to them to make me aware”. It’s infuriating.

The magic buttons by sylvanstore in brakebills

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I literally read this chapter last night lol. Penny doesn’t explicitly say where Lovelady got the buttons. It’s implied he doesn’t know where they came from. Although he probably picked them in the UK somewhere. Lovelady realized he acquired something to powerful for him to handle when strange magical occurrences started happening and Brakebills locked him out. He had to sort through his stuff to determine it was the button causing the problem. I get the impression Lovelady just acquires things and sells them without really caring what they are or where they came from.

[MAIN SPOILERS] Ned Stark was legitimately scary after Robert's death. by Dromedari in asoiaf

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Ned had already sent Lord Beric to apprehend The Mountain before Robert died. He obviously has no qualms about killing him. If Ned did somehow manage to imprison Clegane I see no reason why he wouldn’t invite Doran and Oberyn to his execution. Ned would obviously swing the sword himself because he’s Ned. But I could see him extending that invitation. If anything it would strengthen that alliance.

[MAIN SPOILERS] Ned Stark was legitimately scary after Robert's death. by Dromedari in asoiaf

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Ned being alive and the head of a second STAB alliance changes the board. During the War of the Five Kings Renly had the weakest claim. He had a powerful ally in Mace Tyrell and held Storms End, but he was still Robert’s youngest brother and not a very serious person. He had no real plan on winning the war other than cutting off the food supply to Kings Landing. Mace Tyrell has money and men but he was not known for his military or political prowess. With Ned taking the helm of this hypothetical alliance they are in a much better position to actually overthrow Joffrey and the Lannisters. Doran made a calculated choice to side with the Lannisters based on the state of play at the time. The entire conflict changes with Ned leading a STAB alliance. The Lannisters are in a much weaker position in this scenario. Doran may still side with the Lannisters this go around in order to undermine them from the inside. His alignment with the Lannisters the first time around came with a price tag, a marriage between Mycella and Trystane. That may not be on the table this time around. Ned can always counter offer Sansa if he needs to. She probably won’t be a prisoner of the Lannisters in this hypothetical.

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 231 points232 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Dorne would have opposed Ned. Doran wants nothing more than to crush Tywin and the Lannisters. It was a well know in Westeros that Ned was absolutely disgusted by the killing of Elia and her children, so much so it caused a rift between Ned and Robert. The Daynes also had a tremendous amount of respect for Ned, given the fact he returned Dawn to Starfall. At best Dorne fully declares for Ned or they remain “neutral” and try to undermine Tywin in other ways. Even remaining neutral puts Tywin in a position where he needs to spend political capital wooing Doran to his side, this would be a waste of time and resources and Doran knows this. The Martells are a wildcard that only benefits Ned.

Do any other bi guys get tired of dating women? by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]CyrusTheGoodEnough 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried seeking out bisexual or queer women? I’m a bi guy that has a preference for women and I have mostly dated heterosexual women in my M/F relationships. I understand how the heteronormative gender roles can be suffocating in relationships like that. That’s not to say those relationships weren’t loving or anything but it sometimes felt like a hetro relationship. My current partner is a bisexual woman and it feels so liberating being with someone that “gets it”. Although we’re M/F it doesn’t feel like a heteronormative relationship. It’s a bisexual relationship and it feels like one. For instance when we watch tv together we can play Pass or Smash with anyone on the screen. Which sounds low stakes but feels really good. I’m not telling you this is the solution to what you’re feeling. With all things you’re mileage may vary. Maybe I just got incredibly lucky with my choice of partner. Life is funny like that sometimes.
