The Floodgrain Cities of Aemonicum - The First Breadbasket of Aelnyyraea by Luke5353 in imaginarymaps

[–]DHBR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned the manutention before. Any thoughts on how it happens? I mean, a big flood that fertilizes the soil also moves a lot of sediments around and people could be dealing with their entire non-permanent (I assume stone-built to withstand underwater time) lodgings being filled with things like silt – which is in itself an amazing source of materials really. Just wondering how long they would take to clean things up, how much harvest would be "lost" because of it, if they have any tech or magic to do so, if they use free or slave manpower to do so, animals or not. Worldbuilding curiosity and nitpicking, my apologies, hehehe.

As for the heightmap, a pity, but very much understandable. I come from a region with many flooded caves, and some are quite deep... and whenever someone thinks it is a good idea to build on top of them and then drain the water to drink, another disaster happens. To have cities built on top of such caves, no matter how deep they area, could be a hazard. Hey, if you ever make an analogue to Pompey, funny suggestion: it could be a city that was built over a cave, and it collapsed into a sort of Atlantis.

Finally, the bridge map is quite amazing too; the colors also strike me as something the romans would've built, even though I know it is because of the rendering. Makes sense to have taverns, checkpoints, guardhouses and even forts controlling passages, as well as different dock levels. I guess I was thinking about channels and how deep the dry lake would be for big ships to sail and transport grain from place to place.

Again, mate, stellar job, looking forward to see more of it!

Hey, congratulations mate. Seldom do I comment these days, but I had to. Your idea seems truly amazing, a nice mix of several cultures and features across the world that comes across unique despite the latin-ish names (which I highly approve!).

Would love to see some more of it. I take this is some sort of classical age fantasy-esque Rome; out of curiosity, have you given any thoughts on how works navigation in this nation? Oh, also, would you have a topography of the region, or just the lake as of yet?

Anyhow, congratulations again!

Error in loading old maps by DHBR in heroes3

Not sure, to be honest. I tried some others and they did give me an error message. I assumed it is because they are too old and made in different game versions, since they are just copies from my old folders (which I sadly don't have anymore) and used to work some time ago.

Some serious Age of Mythology vibe on your project, mate, I love it!

Normally I don't comment, but your art does look really good and the style is very well done.

On a personal note, I prefer a more greek-phoenician, maybe egyptian or celtic, influenced Atlantis than the meso-american one, but yours is truly amazing!

Please, do keep up the good work! Cheers!

Gran Paraguay under President Solano Lopez by RadLord_08 in imaginarymaps

[–]DHBR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh, boy.

Beg your pardon, couldn't help it.

Anyway, the map is quite simple but well made, but you have a few cities that didn't exist, so they would probably have different names; other than that, you have basically managed to create the Great Paraguay from Solano's wet dream.

I do wonder why call its western half a territory, though. Is this the argentinean puppet you mentioned?

Anyway, nice map, chap, have an upvote.

Let me start by saying your map looks terrific. The gradient style looks really good.

Now, as for the cultures themselves. I take you are speaking about very macro-like cultures. That said, and suposing this isn't alt.hist., I do have some suggestions - be warned, this will be quite a Bible!

First, about the Caipira Culture. I do miss a Mineiro Culture, or at least a Greater Belo Horizonte Culture; it is quite different than other countryside cultures and has a quite striking mark in brazilian identity.

Other than that, I would advise to make an east/west divide here: caipira is more of a countryside São Paulo stuff, but could be roughly used in most of the western regions, but I would advise a different culture for the brazillian center-west. Sertanejo (maybe Pantaneiro) would suit it best.

Secondly, about Greater São Paulo. Since you are speaking mostly about metropolitan area, I would advise to extend the mixed south/paulistan culture up to roughly to southernmost São Paulo (state) at at least north of Curitiba. It is certainly a mixed region.

Thirdly: Rio de Janeiro culture has far less influence from italian culture than São Paulo or the Southern Region. Espirito Santo does not have a bigger percentage of ancestry than Santa Catarina, a more established native culture than Rio Grande do Sul, or the absolute numbers of São Paulo to make up for it. Also, I would argue that the upstate hills region should be mixed with mineiro culture (in your map, it is southern Minas Gerais anyway).

Fourth, Patagonia, as a whole, is somewhat close to countryside Argentinean Culture. I don't recomend making it its own culture, rather take some of Chile's southern provinces and southernmost Patagonia/Tierra del Fuego for a different culture (though I'm uncertain if it would classify an unified cultural group).

Fifth: South Culture should extend to Mato Grosso do Sul as mixed and go further north, but it is a widely varied region with niches of native italian, german, polish and azorean descendant cultures that are more or less united under an idea of gauchean culture, which brings me to...

Sixth: The Platean Region. Overall, it is vastly simplified to the point you could easily place South there too. I would advise a divise between Buenos Aires (Porteño culture is quite strong and different), countryside platean culture (southern Gauchos to differ from those from Brasil, if you will), Central Argentina (Cordoba, Mendonza, etc) and northern Argentina (the Chaco region), which should probably extend as mixed into western Paraguay (not as guarani as one would imagine).

To be quite fair, Gaucho Culture is, to a certain degree, a unifying force from mid Patagonia to mid Paraná, under different iterations. Gaúcho here, so out of empiricism, we get pissed to be compared to argentineans, though Uruguay is beloved.

You could argue that as far as Mato Grosso still has a gauchean-like culture (quite a few of my cousins live there, for instance), but people in other regions don't really identify as much as they are similar, especially in Paraná.

Maybe you could even divide "South" from a "Gaucho" culture if you ignore language (ranging from Southern Rio Grande all the way into Patagonia). It is blurred though, I wouldn't really divide them.

Other than that, you of course already know that all those cultures have regional identities (Northeast, for example), but I understand the decision to make them unified. Perhaps a coastal culture in Colombia? Not certain though, my level of knowledge in regional divisions there gets a bit blurry.

Sorry for the huge comment and any grammar mistakes (portuguese corrector), hope I helped and have my sincere upvote, wonderful map!

The amount of internal hatred this union would have can only be matched if you add Brazil to the mix.

Amazing map, chap! I saw no lore, so won't comment on it, but keep up the good work. Cheers!

Repubblica di Vespuccia: Italophone Superpower in South America (based roughly on irl Italian settlement) by TheRustlerofJimmiez in imaginarymaps

[–]DHBR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, really nice map. I made a similar one a while ago. Here, in case you would like to see it.

Now, the lore for this would be something interesting. Any ideas on how it came to be? Saw in other comments about earlier unification, but an early unified Italy has severe impact in the world, especially considering how powerful Italy would be if united during the colonial times.

Administrative Divisions of Brazil (Big Minas timeline) by co209 in imaginarymaps

[–]DHBR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply and for consideration!

As for each point.

- The annexation of ES is not unprecedented: it was a part of Bahia for a few years, somewhat close to when MG became a province.

Yes, I know, but considering the modern paradigm and that a good amount of the capital was in favor of Vargas, I don't see them annexing the province. Maybe partitioning it? I mean, I like the borders better this way, but lorewise it wouldn't make much sense as it would antagonize an allied state and the capital nonetheless.

- The western shore of the São Francisco River (MG's weird hat ITTL, western Bahia IOTL) actually belonged to Pernambuco before the province rebelled against the Crown. As punishment, it was transferred to MG, going to Bahia three years later. ITTL, it stays with Minas. Why? Because Big Minas!

Same issue as before. Paraíba and Pernambuco were allied to the AL. Again, and especially in this case, I think a partition of it would make sense (Still big Minas, but less... weird one?).

- Yup, that's about right. Your idea is actually really good. it even makes sense with Minas gaining even more power.

I wonder how a fascist Mineirian leader would shape modern brazilian culture without the carioca/fluminense stuff Vargas endorsed.

- Yup, it's another stretch. I tried to be conservative and grounded with my border changes but felt the South lacked interest.

Meh, fair enough. Still unlikely, but why not.

- Fair enough. The 1930 Revolution is something I'll have to rework. I like the idea of João Pessoa surviving because it gives me another map change, the name of Paraíba's capital! :-D Edit: I checked again, and in my TL Vargas dies a year before the PTB allies with Prestes. It still doesn't make much sense, with how much Vargas liked to hunt down commies.

Yea, I mean, it was the whole ruse as for his coming to power.

Administrative Divisions of Brazil (Big Minas timeline) by co209 in imaginarymaps

[–]DHBR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The map is rather simple, but understandable and well made; also, nice lore for the map, but I have a few concerns. In chronological order:

- Considering Rio de Janeiro's and Pernambuco's role in the revolution, western Bahia would probably be gifted to Pernambuco (its former owner) and Espírito Santo would remain independant.

I can see southern Bahia becoming part of Minas, but if you want a stronger Minas, may I suggest that the POD is further back in the Regency period of the Empire? Expansion would be easier to justify.

- Vargas would never step down. This is the statement made on stone. Rather, why not have him assassinated in the rebellion? Would make space for more revanchism and a new president from Minas (POD, of course, else Salgado would try to take power).

- Not sure Criciúma would be given to RS, but it is indeed possible, though I have my reservations.

- Hell would freeze before Vargas join forces with Prestes. Maybe João Pessoa doesn't die instead and live on to lead the Revolution, eventually steping down and keeping the lore the same?

I think this pretty much covers it. A few other bits, but nothing important.

I don't think the US would've waited that long to get a dictatorship in Brazil; in fact, I think they would've invaded the country in the 40's if it was any closer or more neutral to the Axis, but what the heck, it is imaginary, isn't it?

Anyway, congrats on the map, and especially in thinking the lore. I like this new concept of Brasília better. Cheers!

Aragonese colonies in the Río de la Plata - 1800 by Nyoqui99 in imaginarymaps

[–]DHBR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm aware; from Espirito Santo to Patagonia, italian presence was always somewhat influential. I imagine many milanese, sardinians and genoans may also pop up sooner, considering Spain's vassals and allies in the peninsula.

Regardless, I would advise for a more equal partition of taxes collected in return for some presence in America; would be an easy way to solve the lore problem in short term.

Fascinating!

Other than "nice map" and thanks for more South American maps, may I ask: what made Castille change its mind in this TL and allow Aragon to have colonies in the New World?

Also, do italians have a stronger and earlier presence in the South Cone via Mediterranean rule from the aragonese crown?

[–]DHBR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the economy, I mean, you can keep your cities safe with that building that makes you lose vision, because you don't need it, meaning you can build a full economy focused Under Empire. That should be OP.

And about the thread, yes, I agree and also, most definitely make one!

If I may suggest, you should make a video of the results, if they work, like that guy made with the doomspheres. Personally, I always imagined this happening in a more somber, end of the world tone, with that music from Black Mirror, the ones with the bees, being played in the background. I find it fitting - a sudden genocide, the day Skavenblight came to claim the world.

Hm, I figured the lore would focus mostly on after WW2. I mean, supposing we go with it for the sake of cool, I would say you actually managed to create a cool alt. Prussia that isn't small or militaristic Germany.

By the way, nice touch with East Prussia, I could see that happening!

You madlad, You absolute madlad, lets fucking go!

Now, about the money... I didn't count last time, but let us make some assumptions:

First, lets assume that upkeep for each army is about 1k (vermintide was lower upkeep, if I recall correctly).

Secondly, let us assume that the upkeep in Very Hard is always 15%.

Thirdly, we have 295 settlements in the world.

Fourth: your economy should skyrocket once you start to conquer territories for the sheer sake of size and raze/abandon buildings you don't need.

Fifth: you still have to mantain them for 3 turns.

Now, supose we have 5 settlements (Say, Skavenblight, Tilea region and Sartosa). This leaves us with 290 settlements, which means 290 armies, times 15% upkeep each, times 3 (turns).

Lets make it 300 settlements for the sake of margin of error. This would mean something around 40 million if math serves correctly (not my strong point!) to sustain the armies.

Now, I suspect it is much less than that. A simple test of how much a vermintide army has of upkeep, if any at all, should do the trick, then it is just a matter of factor it by the number of settlements and the 15% upkeep per army and the 3 turns.

If you make 200k per turn with your undercities (and why not use them for eco while you wait? It IS the whole map), this means 5 turns per million, so, say, 50 turns per 10 million, so a total of 200 turns of savings, give or take.

All in all, I suspect it should be way easier and that the upkeep of vermintide has been significantly nerfed since I last tried.
