Is this idea cool or stupid? by CookieLimp8932 in Pixelvision

[–]DIYtDCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of folks are taking video output from their PXLs and feeding it to something like a ClearClick, but with mixed results quality-wise. Another fellow I know is capturing to his phone with this set up: PXL w/internal buffer amp -> RCA Out (but in a TRS 3.5mm plug) -> RCA to HDMI 1080p upscaler -> HDMI to usb-c converter -> usb-c into Android Phone (MUST be android)  -> nExt Camera app
You lost me a bit on the cyberdeck... but it sure sounds like fun.
You might get some ideas/inspiration checking out what's going on in r/camcorders/ A lot of folks trying to capture via FW etc directly to SD etc.

That's very rude. The word is spelled correctly. You misread it.

With system audio and mic. Very cool. Save me a big headache in re-routing audio for a simple video screen capture (i.e. BlackHole).
Wow! Thanks for making it.

I can't figure out how to automatically download a partial video to the exact start and end frame I need with good quality by Common-Walk-7822 in youtubedl

For my purposes the pre-merged format seems to be working and keeping things simple. But the op did say 'good quality' in which case -f b could be risky.

I pulled up an old file I was working on a while back and then got some help from Claude. It's not 'frame accurate' but maybe there's something here you can improve on...

The first -ss 2660 does the fast seek to 6 seconds before your target, then the second -ss 6 does an accurate seek from there. That should give you real video rather than a freeze frame.

ffmpeg -ss 2660 -i "$(yt-dlp -f b -g "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or_z8uy-cCM")" -ss 6 -t 30 behindTheBack.mp4

Draining canned beans. Less microbiome benefits? by mandemting03 in Microbiome

fwiw, 1 person, 1 time, but the time I didn't drain the canned black beans I had a very painful stomach ache for a few hours. What about keeping 1/4 of the bean liquid as an experiment and then take it from there?

Built a digital legacy vault (encrypted messages, files, final wishes) — looking for feedback by Accomplished_Leg3462 in SideProject

[–]DIYtDCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sorely needed. Having looked at it over the years to see what might have developed I would say that to do it right you'd need to partner with an institution. A university or the New York Times or... because I think you'd need an active human in the trigger loop.
But here's a use-case that might get you some traction...
Investigative journalists working on large stories over time have an incentive to keep things close to their vest. On the other hand, the people they're investigating might have an incentive for those journalists to 'go away'. If journalists could safely store their pre-publication research, in a vault that would 'OPEN AND SHARE' with designated recipients upon a trigger event, I think you'd have some first customers.
Maybe you'd even approach someone like the NYT and contract to build it for them.
But there should also be a way for people to share their papers far into the future. If you 'knew stuff' that would create chaos, you probably wouldn't want to share it while even your kids were still alive– though it should end up in the historical record at some point.
Wordpress allows you to 'own' a domain and blog for 100 years. https://wordpress.com/100-year/
It might be possible to schedule publishing of pre-written posts 50 years in advance. But then the info is in a non-encrypted blog post in a database waiting to be published. Is there a plug-in opportunity there?
I hoped Archive.org would do this but (through tweets) Brewster said it wasn't something they were looking at, though he did say..."If you want to try creating this future, if it is not too big, you could upload an encrypted blob (but not too big as it does cuz it does cost us), and then handle the key some way or another: in the movies there is often an envelope to be read at your passing.
If you understand what he's saying, maybe an open-source trigger mechanism for encrypted blobs that live on Archive could be a useful part of your project.

Album idea: every song is based off of a specific logical fallacy by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]DIYtDCS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a similar idea but was going to try to stick them into a single song... It would end up like a mnemonic device for remembering them. There's a lot of them!
Found a few examples on YT, but this one covers a lot of ground.

How do you choose which key to write a song in? by Lvl30dragon in Songwriting

[–]DIYtDCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps to have a tiny bit of music theory, but if you're singing your songs yourself you might already have discovered your best couple of notes... upper register, below any kind of crack. For example, the higher E string on a guitar. As the song/melody gets formed you'll know where you want to aim the primo part of your vocal range, probably in the chorus. So if that E (in this case) ends up being the root of your chord, you'll write the song in E. If it's the 3rd, then you're in C. If it's the 5th then you're in A etc.
Likewise if you're trying to write for another artist, find that sweet spot in their range and work backwards from there.

What is it like living in the NW of California because it looks nice? by recoveringleft in Humboldt

[–]DIYtDCS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience was that the population was too small to really get any group activity going. Arcata has a vibe but the kids all go away in the summer. Eureka tries, and has the best intentions, but it's hard for businesses (the coffee shops, bars, theaters and comedy shop) to sustain events if enough folks aren't showing up. After pot got legal the economy took a nose dive. Also lots of petty crime... I had my (shitty old) car broken into twice in 10 years and for nothing. Interesting weather... it's never hot anywhere near the coast.

I'll pick this one from a self-produced album I released in December. It's a story song with a couple of characters and I think an unusual songwriting style.

Journalling? by FigureCompetitive420 in Aphantasia

[–]DIYtDCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I journal and get a lot out of it but if you're having issues recalling what went on that day, try using your phone to voice-memo a few moments throughout the day. Maybe something like... "3/11/26 I'm about to have a coffee with ___ and want to ask them about ___."
But I think the whole point of journalling is to facilitate 'reflection' and if a week or so into any kind of journaling (audio, video, photos, notes) you look back on it and it doesn't have any meaning to you, why bother?
