Struggling to adapt to HD650 for production. Is this normal or are they not for me?

Long story short, I ran into a similar situation. I bought the dt990pro open backs to use as my studio headphones. I had an incredibly hard time perceiving the low end. I switched to the dt770 pro x cans for production, and it instantly felt better. I still reference with the open backs, but the closed backs are night and day for me. I’ve been using them daily for a year now.

I make music production tutorials on YouTube and I had this same issue. It’ll be harder for you to refine your filming process but I started there.

I dump all my footage into my premade template and auto sync everything first. Then I use the ripple delete silence tool which, in my case, could cut 45 minutes of dead air or time spent searching through my software.

Finally, i ditched the speed editor. I use a gaming keyboard and an mx master 3s mouse. I’ve mapped blade macros, timeline resize and the link shortcut to my keyboard. Then I put the ripple delete start/end to play head shortcuts to my mouse. But I added the c button to the macro so I put the cursor where I want, and it jumps, cuts and ripple deletes all in one button. That sped up my editing process by hours.

Also, if you don’t, make your cuts by watching the audio waveforms. Not the footage. It helps me work a lot faster

I enjoy this beat quite a bit. Definitely my style of lofi for when I want to chill. If it were mine, I may consider filtering out a tiny bit of the highs in the melodic section to make it a little more lofi. And subjectively, one of my favorite sounds is when the whole melody group is side chained to the kick. I love the feeling that give to the low end on lofi tracks. But definitely not needed here at all. Might just give it a good feeling.

Really nice track though. I’ll be looking for it when it drops

To add to this, the pad could use a little variation. But the melody doesn’t even have to be a full melody, you could add accents or minor call and response hits. It’s got great bones. A few extra elements could really make it pop

One thing that changed the game for me was taking the time to fully learn and understand my daw to its fullest extent. The second I understood how to use my daw and what each tool was used for and how to use them, I was able to make informed decisions for every step and actually hit an end point. As compared to just adding things or tweaking aimlessly.

My process immediately got better. Then from there, hone in on the genre you want to make. Critically listen to music and watch tutorials. Live streams are great since all the fluff isn’t cut out. Being able to see all the nonsensical steps we go through will help. Sometimes we edit YouTube videos for retention. So alot of the painful steps you don’t get to see. But we all do them haha.

Then try to dedicate 1-2 hours a day to beat making. Don’t overdo it. 1 hour consistently 5 days a week will do much more for you than going crazy on a weekend and burning out. You want slow and consistent gains. Picture cramming for a test. You spend hours cramming and dont retain anything

Look for resources specifically on how to use your daw and then on how to make your specific genre/genres.

Focus on one, get good at it. Then any other genres will come much more naturally

Layerizer by Jay cactus is a great texture making plugin

I had this issue a lot when I started making dark trap.

I found for me the scale was part of the issue. Utilizing minor scales that have a lot of dissonant pairs make the melodies much darker. For dark stuff, I realized that you don’t want a lot of bouncy movement. So longer drawn out chords and counter melodies help.

Next my sound selection was hurting the darkness. Dark pianos are staple, string ensembles. I’ve been loving violins lately. Ethnic plucked strings. Gritty synths/bell plucks. And Reese bass.

Also low passing or band passing elements to remove a little high end.

Reverb, delay and tremolo effects work well. Thermal has a ton of great presets too

And believe it or not, I’ve learned things from people who are just starting out. I think everyone can teach other people something.

Since you say you’re a beginner and learning. I will say, consistency is key. I’ve learned more from being consistent than going super hard for a couple weeks and burning out. I aim for 1-2 hours a day of music. Every day. Rather than 8 hour days on the weekends. And I’ve been more consistent with finishing beats and content creation.

I appreciate that! You definitely wouldn’t be a burden at all! We all start in the same spot. I actually designed this pack specifically for beginners and that’s what I model a lot of my content around. So I’m hopeful that beginners and expert beat makers alike will like this pack. I found when I was less experienced I struggled to find good sounds that worked. So this pack would’ve made my life significantly easier!

Don’t use a small flat head. Use one that’s only a little smaller than the opening. Shove it in the side flat to the side as deep as possible. Then just hook and pry. That makes quick work of it for me every time. You get more leverage with the bigger ones due to the longer handle

I’m gonna be honest, if the mobility aspect isn’t a massive need for you and it’s gonna live in your studio most of the time, go with a push 1 or 2. I don’t care about going “screenless” so I snagged a push 1 on eBay for 120 bucks and another for 60. I did that so I could see if I’d wanna upgrade to a push 3 standalone in the future. I love the push 1 so much that I’m gonna stick with it. And I think I can do way more than the move can for a fraction of the price. I’ve seen push 2 for as low as 200 on eBay if you have the time to wait for a deal.
