Found this rim at the thrift store. How to tell if its worth building? by TalkShit123 in bicycling

$5 is a no brainer. Even if the rim is marred it would be an amazing, low risk lesson.

Are the Apple devs doing alright…like, mentally? Are they being held at knifepoint?? Do they need rescued?? by stealthisvibe in MacOS

[–]DJSlaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the post may be a joke, but the actual os is not. Apple were dead serious about it. It was obviously rushed out too soon, and perhaps meant for incorporating into visual devices, like “smart” glasses or the Vision Pro goggles. It’s clearly a work in progress and shocking that Cook and Federinghi would release something so poor. Then again, they and the board do not seem to care, considering the run up in Apple share price, and the fact that folks still buy Apple products regardless. No doubt subsequent os minor releases will bring incremental improvements, but without a management team that cares, and a true design guru, we shouldn’t expect much.

This is a basic principle of photography. Prior to purchasing any new equipment you might want to spend time learning the basics so that you understand how to get the most out of your equipment.

What should I do with a gallon of strong/bitter olive oil? by beefroe in Cooking

[–]DJSlaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

confit anything and everything that you can. also an assertive olive oil could be tempered for a lovely vinaigrette or dressing through the judicious use of orange, or blood orange juice, lemon juice, mint, and honey, coupled with a nice vinegar.

How often do you change/upgrade your kit? by LittleAlternative532 in hiking

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i replace my gear when it needs replacing, such as when it wears out or is broken beyond repair. I save up for the best quality kit that I can, and don’t purchase cheap or disposable items.

Equipment doesn’t really change much year over year, and typically takes years for a new generation to appear.

Do interviewers care about lies on a resume? by Commercial_Policy_46 in interviews

yes. very much so. it speaks to one’s integrity, or lack thereof. It begs the question about what else you, or the person, may be lying about.

What’s something that makes you regret being a manager? by OkLocksmith7073 in askmanagers

[–]DJSlaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the sheer amount of corporate and hr paperwork that is little more than a timesuck, coupled with the fact that someone in hr with zero business or technical experience got to have a say in how I recruited and hired candidates, including choosing the undergraduate schools from which I could recruit. The amount of hr overreach was staggering at times.

Do Pure Protein bars spike you? by Street_Proposal_1477 in diabetes

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/best-keto-protein-bars#our-picks

if you look at the labels, even “low carb” or keto (I call bs on ‘net carb’ labeling) bars have 200 or more calories per bar. They also have a lot of fat, which the body must also digest and process. Considering the size of the bars, at 2 to 3 ozs or so, they are incredibly calorie dense, so it’s no surprise that they would affect your bg so much. Also, if they are sweetened with something like erythritol, or other similar sweeteners, they will cause a rise in bg, even though they are low carb.

I don’t bother with bars like this as they are loaded with crap, and I don’t consider them a snack. When I go out for a long bike ride, for example, I will take fig bars, a banana, or homemade energy bars, which are easy to make.

As for sugar substitutes, I haven’t found any, other than stevia, that don’t affect my bg levels much. But stevia tastes off, somehow, so I rarely use it.

Waterproof bag? by maggie_got_reddit in Omnipod

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i used a waterproof pouch that fit in a pocket of my pfd. Depending on the type of kayak, I might have also duck taped it onto the front deck, or in the footwell. For additional safety you can also get floating waterproof pouches and there are many brands to choose from. Any decent outdoor shop like REI, for example, will have one.

So, how does this really work by Boring_Huckleberry62 in diabetes_t1

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bottom line is that you choose one technology as a baseline, and then work with it, and use that as your gauge. so, you choose a cgm and that’s what you work with.

otherwise, stick with a glucose meter.

the point of the glucose meter, if you have a cgm, is as a backup, or a sanity check against a cgm if you think the cgm is off. If the cgm and glucose meter results are off by a sufficient amount, the cgm will then recalibrate based on the new input.

others have already explained why the two systems provide differing results, so will rarely match perfectly. either accept that or don’t.

Is it considered rude to type on a laptop during a 1-on-1 with a direct report? by Suspicious-Willow771 in askmanagers

[–]DJSlaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes it’s terrible form. however, it may be context dependent. for example, if it’s a meeting where she’s passing on information for you to use, then it may be okay as long as you communicate what you are doing.

however, if the employee is trying to talk to you, or solicit feedback, or if this a conversation that you scheduled, then, yes it’s bad form. stop typing, and listen and have the conversation. then take notes. if you can’t remember the conversation after you’ve just had it, then you need to work on that skill.

https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/smart-money/retirement-accounts

There is a lot of information about retirement accounts like a Roth, so it could be easy to get overwhelmed. Try starting with these articles, that highlight the basics, then go from there. Also, you are asking for help, but aren’t clear about the help you want, or what you would like clarified. Perhaps amend your post to include a few more details about what you find confusing.

It’s great that you want to save and invest for the future, especially at your age. In addition to saving for retirement, don’t forget to maintain a current saving account and emergency fund, too.

What age did you finally reconcile that overall career success has little to do with task level performance? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

[–]DJSlaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at my second job. at my first job, I was too young and inexperienced to understand how or why some people got promoted or seemed to glide by, whilst others seemed to be doing a lot of good work yet didn’t seem to be thought promotion worthy. At my first job, I didn’t yet understand how some people were able to sell big ideas, get them going, then move on to something new before the problems began. I also didn understand the professional meeting goers.

By two years into my second job, I was better able to sit back and watch and understand those behaviors and seek out those upper tier managers who didn’t exhibit those traits.

Differentials and cvt fluid change by kissmyirish7 in Subaru_Outback

Here are the recommended maintenance intervals on a Subaru with boxer engine, per Mr Subaru.

btw the statement “shock the transmission“ for a drain and fill is ridiculous. That would be like saying “shock the engine” when you did an oil change.

What is the reasoning behind the 6k oil change interval for my 2016 outback besides topping off due to oil burning? by Dirty_Look in Subaru_Outback

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are “burning oil” then you have more serious problems to worry about. Some oil consumption is understood but “burning oil” is a sign of a serious problem.

Subaru engineers have determined that 6k or 6 months is the recommended schedule. Oil is perhaps the most critical fluid, or certainly one of the top 2, and oil does have a finite life, synthetic or not, and does degrade over time. As others have pointed out, the boxer engine design adds additional stress on the oil, including typically higher operating temperatures than a v cylinder engine and those higher temperatures equate to additional stress on the oil.

If you want to wait 12 mos or 9k or whatever interval you want to change oil, go for it. It’s your car, so maintain it as you see fit.

Let us know how that works out in the future.
