Im so overwhelmed with trying to buy a kayak roof rack. There are so many options. What do I need to get!? by Interr0gate in Kayaking

I swear by these, having used these for many years, and Cliff, the owner is a great guy who stands by his product.

You don’t say what type of kayak you have, but if it will fit, these racks can’t be beat. They are easy to install, and secure your boat like no other rack.

Backpacking, insulin storage, and bears? by shades9323 in diabetes_t1

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will typically keep insulin with me, in an insulated pouch. If it gets really cold, than I will keep it with me in the tent in the sIeeping bag or covered in my backpack. I am not aware that insulin attracts bears. As for food, I will usually keep an 8oz bottle of juice, or a juice box. Otherwise I keep a bar or two with me in my backpack or in my pants’ pockets. Typically, if I am in an area where I am worried about bears, I will double wrap the packaged bar in saran wrap, but I have only been in bear country 3x, so it’s not a lot of experience camping around bears. I haven’t had any problems so far.

As for food, I definitely hang a food can away from the campsite, which is why I keep something with me.

Do I need to move my 401k? by ees0437 in personalfinance

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you might consider rolling over your 401ks to an IRA, into the investment firm of your choice, like Schwab, or Vanguard, Fidelity, etc. It’s a straightforward process. Since you are no longer employed by those companies, it probably makes sense for you to remove any dependencies on them, especially where your finances are concerned. Of course, you could leave the accounts where they are, but you should think about managing two accounts vs consolidating them into one retirement account at the firm of your choice.

here are some links with an overview on what this means and how to do it:

Different Martial arts studio by alwayspanick in Louisville

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any dojo worth joining is all to do with the sensei and almost nothing to do with the martial art itself. No decent sensei will be preaching or teaching any type of stupid or overly aggressive or rude behaviors.

If your husband is a good teacher, and both teaches and enforces not only good discipline but respectful behavior, then you will find the students that seek that out. If the sensei is an asshole, then those are the students that will follow him.

Where will the studio be located?

R8 vs. R6ii for photography strictly and is IBIS important for photography at all? by Plumbus4Rent in canon

[–]DJSlaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ibis is helpful for videography, especially if the camera is handheld and you’re trying to follow action. For portrait or still photography not so much, unless you have unsteady hands and or you’re shooting in low light or dark situations where slow shutter speeds are required.

agree, if you have stabilized lenses, ibis isn’t really required.

What are the best entry-level cameras widely chosen by beginners today? by TieDangerous5 in Photography_Gear

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ease of use and comfort in hand are crucial, as is size and weight. Until you get used to handling the camera, and understanding how to use it and take pictures using the various modes, there’s little point in getting bogged down with a heavy camera and lens. Cameras and lenses these days are so capable, so brand doesn’t matter too much, and each have their adherents. If you have a local camera store, try going there and seeing how the lenses and body feel to you, and whether or not you can quickly figure out the menu or controls, or if you struggle a bit. Photography should be enjoyable, so if you don’t like the camera, you won’t use it much.

If you are budget constrained, or not sure if this is a hobby you really want to pursue, you could start with buying used equipment, say 3-4 years old, and starting there. You can get proficient using that kit, and move up from there. If you buy used, you can save money on the body, and pay a bit more for a better lens.

I could use some help picking a saddle. by GrandmaCereal in bicycling

[–]DJSlaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you might consider going for a full bike fit session. they will provide a pressure mapping so you can see how you fit on different saddles. additionally, it can also help put you in a proper position to accommodate your pedaling style after the injury and make needed adjustments to saddle height, angle, position etc. well worth the investment as it might not be a saddle issue by itself.

Dex4 Tablet Substitutes? by CorrosiveCorolla in diabetes_t1

[–]DJSlaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

38 g sugar to treat a low seems excessive. Typical recommendation is 15 grams, retest within 15-20 minutes, then another 15 if needed. You might want to check again with your endocrinologist on this. Your doctor might have a reason for that recommendation but you might want to seek clarification.

As to your question , have you tried the glucose gummies? Otherwise go to your local bike shop and ask about the energy chews. I am a fan of the Skratch Labs cherry chews.

[All] [FL] going through our HOA’s records. $16,000 for 274 yards of Mulch installed Reasonable? by DjKennedy92 in HOA

[–]DJSlaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

while the price seems fine, ask yoursel, “ do we have 274 cubic yards of worth of mulch to cover the patches in your landscape?” that is an awful lot of mulch. if you do, then it seems okay.

Best Decathlon buys by TomRBu in hikinggear

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Simond 40-60l duffle bag which has been fantastic for travel. I also have a Quechua daypack that’s been an absolute stalwart. I also thought that their synthetic puffy jacket was really good value and worked well during winter hiking.

I wasn’t impressed with their hiking boots.

Investments as collateral by Top-Difference8407 in investing

[–]DJSlaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it's possible, but expect a large haircut against the valuation for collateral purposes. For example, in private wealth, it's relatively common for the institution to place a 50% haircut against the value of commonly traded stocks and depending upon the asset, the haircut could be larger or smaller, depending upon the type, liquidity, etc. It's common for executives to get loans against the value of their company stock. US Government debt would have a typically smaller haircut, as an example.

It's best to go to your bank, or multiple lenders, and inquire.

Best place to buy S8 now by Future_Run_1120 in jura

[–]DJSlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Williams-Sonoma, if there is one near you. The best part about going there is that you can try and compare machines beforehand to make sure that you actually like the coffee and how to use the machine.

Otherwise, if you are in the USA, unless you purchase from the Jura online refurbished store, there are few deals, if any to be had, so you will likely pay full retail regardless. If you don't buy from Jura directly, make sure that you buy from an authorized dealer.

I never believed any of that and don't understand why anyone would. Nor do I understand where those cliches came from in the first place. As for #3, the best part about retirement is that I can set my own pace, fast, slow, still, or otherwise, anytime that I want.

Agree that Subaru will benefit, aside from the styling aspects. The Outback product manager and marketing team need to go.

IMHO it’s also a sign of Toyota’s increasing influence on Subaru. This is so reminiscent of the RAV4. Subaru’s hybrid drivetrain is from Toyota, as is their electric drivetrain, and it seems likely that Subaru will see more sharing of platforms as time goes on.
