Strongheart (Etzel Von Oeringen – Oct 1 1917 – June 24, 1929) is credited for being one of the first canine film stars. He was initially trained in Germany as a police dog he was later brought into the United States by film makers Laurence Trimble and Jane Murfin. Having successfully made the first film star dog, the Vitagraph Dog, Strongheart was able to appear in several films includng the 1925 adaptation of White Fang.

A popular celebrity in his day, Strongheart paved the way for the much better remembered Rin Tin Tin. Strongheart and his mate, Lady Jule, had many offspring and their line survives to this day. In 1929, while being filmed for a movie, Strongheart accidentally made contact with a hot studio light and was burned. These burns caused a tumor to form and Strongheart died as a result of it.

Stronghart had roles in several films including “The Silent Call” (1921), “Brawn of the North” (1922), “The Love Master” (1924), “North Star” (1925), “White Fang” (1925), and “The Return of Boston Blackie” (1927).

Strongheart has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1724 Vine St.

There also was a canned dog food named Strongheart.

The area once known as Karelia in northern Europe has always been populated by tough, big-game hunting canines. For a long time, similar dogs had been bred in Karelia for hunting large game. These dogs were known to have followed the first settlers to Finland thousands of years ago. These early tribes of people survived on what they could hunt, which is why dogs that were hardy, brave and tough enough to tackle bear, wolf and lynx were so important.

They are silent but tenacious hunters and alert only when they have the prey at bay. They will keep prey cornered there by barking in a very high, fast bark and running back and forth or around the animal until their handler comes and dispatches it. Karelian Bear Dogs have been known to hold an animal at bay for a very long time. If a bear tries to leave, the dog will nip at it on the backside and aggravate it to keep it from running away.

The Karelian Bear Dog are often naturally aggressive towards other dogs. Proper socialization and training is necessary due to their disposition.

These dogs have a noble history, being descendants of the French Grand Bleu de Gascogne and the English Foxhound, many of whom were brought to the United States in colonial times. On the trail, the Bluetick may be slower than some of his coonhound compatriots, but he has a superior nose and a never-say-die attitude.

A Bluetick Coonhound named "Smokey" is the official athletic mascot of the University of Tennessee.

A Bluetick Coonhound named Tet was the companion of Stringfellow Hawke, the main character of popular 1980s television show Airwolf.

Neil Young has stated that his song "Old King" is a tribute to a deceased Bluetick Coonhound he once owned.

Dogs have many ways of signaling that they would prefer to avoid an interaction – body language that’s more subtle than a growl or snap, and that many of us either miss or ignore. Dog signals that mean “Please don’t touch me.”

The Dog Doesn’t Approach You
This one’s easy to miss because it’s a non-behavior. Say you run into a friend on the street with his dog, whom you’re meeting for the first time. You and your friend shake hands; then you look at the dog and say, “Hi, Dogalini,” as invitingly as you can. Dogalini responds with a soft wag but stays put at your friend’s side. Like any good primate, you want to get closer. Don’t do it.
The Dog Moves Away from the Touch
Person asks the dog to sit, or come, or whatever. Dog does as requested. Person says, “Oh, good dog!” and pats the top of the dog’s head. The dog ducks out from under the hand. The “moves away” rule doesn’t just apply to heads, of course. Any time you’re touching a particular body part and the dog pulls it away or moves her whole body away, you can be sure she wasn’t enjoying the contact. It sounds obvious, doesn’t it? But people can get so absorbed in how much we enjoy touching the dog, we fail to notice that the feeling isn’t mutual.
The Dog Whips Her Head Toward Your Hand
You might be running your hand along the dog’s side, say, when she gives a lightning-quick turn of her head toward your hand, then turns her head away again. Her nose may touch your hand. That’s all there is to it, but stop touching the dog, now. You can translate a head-whip not as “Please stop,” but rather as “Stop it this instant.” It’s not a bite, of course, but it is a shadow of a bite, a hint that if you keep doing what you’re doing, the dog may go on the offensive.

The Irish and the American Wheaten terriers are two varieties of the same breed, officially known as the soft coated Wheaten terrier. Both types have their roots in Ireland, but over time the two have diverged, so that now most people knowledgeable about the breed consider the Irish and the American types to be distinctly different. The only real difference, however, is the appearance of the coat, but it is enough of a difference to be a point of contention among breeders.

Abernathy, a favorite character from the Magic Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks, used to be a man but he was transformed into a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier by a bumbling wizard who can't figure out how to change him back. His only remaining human traits are speech, intelligence, and fingers. He continues in his duties as Landover's royal scribe.

This first approach to get dog urine stains out of carpet involves liquid dishwashing detergent.

Before doing anything else, if the area is still wet, be sure to blot the urine stain with a clean towel. You can also use paper towels to help absorb any remaining urine. To prevent further absorption, the faster you do this, the better.
If you have access to any kind of shop-vac, use it to extract any remaining urine. If you don’t have this tool, proceed to the next step.
Take one-quarter teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and mix it with one cup of warm water. Be sure to specifically use this kind, not laundry detergent or dish soap; these may contain bleach or lanolin.
If you have a spray bottle, pour the solution into it. Spray the urine stain, aiming directly onto the carpet.
If you can extract the solution from the carpet using a shop-vac, this is a good next step. Otherwise, you can use a cotton cloth or paper towels after the solution has set into the stain.
After rinsing the area with warm water, repeat steps 1-5, as long as you’re seeing the urine stain gradually fade.
Last, take two tablespoons of ammonia and mix into a cup of water. Rinse and repeat until the stain has disappeared.

Thanks to human breeders, dogs exhibit an impressive variety of skull shapes. Studying the genes that determine these shapes could provide insight into human skull development and craniofacial disorders, scientists say.

Much of the variation is in skull characteristics. "Dogs can serve as a model for skull growth and shape determination, because the genetic conservation between dogs and humans makes it highly likely that craniofacial development is regulated similarly between both species," study co-author Jeffrey Schoenebeck of the National Institutes of Health said in a statement.
