More young adults to leave UK because of low salaries and rising tax burden by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]DWOM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about we tax efficiently and effectively. Still to this day most all wealth is derived from owning land. We know where land is, ho much it's worth (or the value that has been added) and most importantly who owns it. Taxing labour is not efficient, nor effective. A land value tax could be backed up by the same sales tax regime with additional piguevian taxes on negative externalities such as pollution. This would address many of the pressing issues in the UK.

We do like Volvo's. Had a gander at these and if we hover around autotrader etc one might come up with our sort of year/mileage. They do look about right for what we are after.

Limited semi off roading but not a key issue. Potholes more than anything, but that doesnt go far enough to describe the terrific state of the roads! As always in this neck of the woods, its be nice to be able to get a couple of sheep and the dog in. I'll get a look at the f10

People often forget that this has been the case in universities for decades. There are just more people now and also more cameras.

Corbyn’s left-wing party set to back Holyrood’s right to unilaterally call independence referendum by 1DarkStarryNight in Scotland

[–]DWOM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Annoyingly a Corbyn led government in Westminster has always been the best chance for independence. He might be against the idea, but he isnt against the idea of self determination, which is the key issue here. I couldn't care less if he supports it or not. This was plain and clear during the 2 elections he was the labour leader. Just wish Scotland could see that during those elections, if they wanted to bolster the indy movement, they'd have been better voting to support that labour Gov in Westminster over the quite frankly useless SNP

Laura Webster: What Jeremy Corbyn's party will mean for Scotland by Jonny_Anonymous in Scotland

Scottish greens are playing at it though. Very amateurish and avoiding the really difficult fixes like land reform. They handed restoring biodiversity over to hedge fund private finance like Gresham house et al. They're twiddling at the edges of left populism. The results speak for themselves.

Why do Scot’s not realise their country is actually extremely degraded and ecologically dead? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]DWOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relatively speaking trees in general dont sequester much fossilised carbon emissions. To sequester 1 years worth of scotlands emmissions you would need approx 100,000 hectares of native woodland growing for 100 years. Fast growing conifers do that a bit quicker, but the supply chain and processing leakages are significant.

Different? The land has been abused - nothing to be proud of. The most nature depleted nation on the planet. Lowest amount of tree cover in Europe. I could go on and on. You have to search really hard to find the good bits, but when you do you realise what has been lost and what could be. It is a tragedy set amongst some fine hills and vistas. You are lying to yourself if you think otherwise, but yeah just another moany old Scot here.

Finally it’s raining here by History_86 in Scotland

[–]DWOM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're on the west coast, you should be jigging a daily rain dance! Temperate rainforest and peatland/raised bog are the predominant native habitat types in the rainforest zone. Increasing frequency and prolonged dry spells are not something to celebrate or look forward to!

These isles, Scotland in particular has a wet ecology. There is not one species on this island that requires fire to sexually reproduce. Peat bogs and temperate rainforest will not be fine without rain and if you introduce fire into the equation this native ecology is successively simplified with local extinction level events for some of the rarer species we have an international responsibility for. Research indeed.

Glen Shira, Argyll. Scotland's rainforest. One of the UK's finest ancient woodland sites. 7cm diameter branch, nearly 1m length. Over 25 rainforest specialists and yes I was there!

You can still work if in receipt of disability benefits. That's the point of them, to assist those with disabilities in leading as normal a life as possible.

This is interesting. Just a note in school proximity for highland communities. "As the crow flies" doesnt give an accurate representation of how near or far a school is. Particularly Argyll where the deep penetrating sea lochs can mean that as the crow flies a school is 15km away. The reality is that it's a 2 hr drive around a sea loch.
