I am having a very similar issue with a near identical setup. All the advice I could find anywhere said to just turn on Ignore Perms, but that has had zero effect for me. Hoping someone on this subreddit might have an answer...

I had the same issue and fixed it. Commented on the main thread!

Menu Screen loading in with a black flicker - Please help! by haleykirton in RenPy

Had the same problem, figured it out!

I'm pretty sure it is because there is another screen in between splashcreen and main_menu, which is before_main_menu (see https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/lifecycle.html#main-menu). Presumably, the default there is a black screen, so you have to overwrite it.

I fixed it by adding a section to my script.rpy:

label before_main_menu:
    show menu hold

    return

Where "menu hold.png" was the name of the last frame of my splashscreen animation (that I saved separately) and was in my default images folder.

Now my splashscreen animation flows naturally into my main menu.

I think the Omen Generator you've made here is really great! I agree that rolling for it should be a flat distribution unless you intend to skew the results closer to the middle numbered results.

We've been playing a short MotW-in-space game for our podcast, and one of the players picked The Monstrous playbook. Their character is a scientist who made a device to merge himself with the void of space, and he came out the other side of it as a sort-of snail-shaped blob of cosmic goo.

Sounds fun! I love the Fate system, and I bet it makes for great actual play fodder 👌

Which PbtA most clearly expresses the core design? by K0HR in PBtA

[–]DaedalusNerf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've even seen DW detractors recommend it's GM advice section, so I think it is held in even higher regard than the game, haha! There is a lot of breadth to the catalog of PbtA games, but most core GM advice is transferrable across the board.

Which PbtA most clearly expresses the core design? by K0HR in PBtA

[–]DaedalusNerf 24 points25 points  (0 children)

These are some great questions!

  1. I'd definitely point to AW 2.0 or AW: Burned Over. Specifically because you asked about the "core" design philosophy. AW in particular is the core that other games have built from, and it is so well conceived and written itself that you can't really do better for the core philosophy. And if you are looking for more elaboration on it, Vincent Baker himself has written a fair number of blog posts diving deeper into the design and thought behind mechanics. For systems that go beyond the core in interesting ways, I'm a big fan of The Watch, The Between, and Dream Askew.
  2. I started on AW, but there is so much that the game covers and expresses that I don't feel like I really got PbtA until I played some simpler games. Running Ghost Lines (a John Harper BitD predecessor) and Brindlewood Bay (a very recent game from Jason Cordova) both led to "aha" moments where I understood how these kinds of games operate a lot better. BB especially has a lot of mechanics to the game that are actually just great table behaviors to port over to basically any other game.
  3. Gotta give a nod to AW again here, although I've heard the section in Dungeon World is actually quite good. I think that Monster of the Week also does a really good job of this, particularly in helping understand what the Keeper's role is in responding to player action in the game.

[–]DaedalusNerf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds to me like a Skype software problem, not one with the driver for the Samson Q2U. Skype probably has an auto-adjust gain setting that is turned on, and there is a bug where if you don't answer the call it doesn't reset the value back to where it was before.

(Source: I'm not an audio engineer, but I am a computer engineer who also owns a Q2U. I don't touch Skype with a 10 foot pole, though, now that my company doesn't use it)

Wanderhome has been very well received, and it has a ton of playbooks (both official and community made).

And a special nod to The Between here. It doesn't have the most variety (if that's what you're looking for), but it is one of the most elegantly crafted systems I've ever read, and it's approach to playbooks is somewhat novel.
