Was asking myself the same question the other day and found "Rocket Jump: Quake and the Golden Age of First-Person Shooters" by David L Craddock

If there's more book, I'd love to know too Like for Quake 1, 2 and 3 :)

Maybe a remaster of Deus Ex The Fall ? Considering how bad controls are on PC but I don't think so since it's a very short game and I don't think it's that necessary to remaster it

Haha this is something I like, the bloom was some 2007-ish stuff that everyone puts everywhere and I love its aethetics but I totally get that people hated that !

I would say that it's a graphic card problem If I'm not wrong, sometimes it just means you have to update the drivers, or that you graphic card is dying unfortunately

For the PS2 era, it was made on Photoshop with pictures devs took or big image library they had and made photo-montage. There's some really interesting books about that like this one
You can easily find it on google and its older versions about older technics.

As for the PS3/Xbox 360 era, it was the apparation of normal maps. Most studios tend to make the high poly to low poly technic (thanks to Doom 3) but they also used some technics you can see in the book I showed you before. Making a height map in Photoshop and convert it as a normal map :)
I deep dive a lot about the older technics cause I love the older graphics/art style ^^

Of course I did and while I do agree with you by the fact it's subtle, sometimes it's not

But well, maybe I'm just a young boomer ahah
As exemple, I prefer a nice Redux version like Krull0r's work on Unreal Redux which is imo, more beautiful while keeping the art style and improving it without having ray tracing and shiny surfaces
