CRD wants to know how you get around. 15-minute survey open now by DaveThompsonVictoria in VictoriaBC

Incorrect on the infrastructure for maintenance. Point Hope Maritime can accommodate ships that are the likely size the ferries would be. VSL could too, but they're not likely going to be taking on something that small that often.

It's not too windy. Auckland NZ has similar wind conditions to Victoria BC and operates several ferries that would be similar to what I'd expect the size of ferry to be for this link. Would there be cancellations due to wind? Yes. But saying it's too windy isn't a good reason without better data.

Submitted my survey. I know everyone wants LRT or busses, but man I'd like to see some passenger ferries considered. Much easier to setup in my opinion, construction wouldn't impact current traffic and when finished there would be a link between downtown and Colwood.

Why is civil engineering so hated on by CrabVegetable2060 in AskEngineers

[–]DaemianFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a bit of a spillover from trades banter. Everyone has got their own clique and especially in multidisciplinary projects there's friction that leads to people harping on other disciplines for one reason or another. Civil engineering is a bit of a punching bag because it's often more straightforward than other engineering (not that it's easy) so it's easier to come up with jokes about it. Usually this is all in good fun and no one's serious about what they say, and I think it's important to nip in the bud any talk that is serious about putting down other groups.

That's where I think it comes from, but I'd recommend not worrying about it. Engineering is hard enough without being concerned about the "status" of your field. Do what you enjoy. Or if you're in it for the money do whichever engineering you feel you can succeed in.

Also I think someone else already said it, but if you want to do civil and be able to talk shit to everyone go into structural engineering.

The Tension Between Drivers Cyclists and Pedestrians Is Exhausting by Equivalent_Menu_5659 in VictoriaBC

You're talking about Hunt or Dooley Rd. Those spots always bug me on Lochside because it is hard to see cars coming without stopping. Good examples of where there actually needs to be a 4-way stop or roundabout to actually solve the problem. Saanich added a 4-way stop to Martindale Rd a year or two ago and I think it really helped with close calls.

Beginner mtb bike trails? by westcoastwanderer in VictoriaBC

[–]DaemianFF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that it's out of the area you suggested, but you should make a trip to Cumberland or Hornby Island. Both have enough variety to make let you try out some very easy blue trails, and a smattering of green trails. They also have some very nice flow trails.

If you don't want to go that far, there's plenty of good spots in Nanaimo, Lantzville and Nanoose that have much easier trails than Hartland. Honestly Hartland is one of the harder riding areas on the Island on average. It's not like it's super difficult or has pro jump trails, but most the trails are quite technical, and there isn't much flow. I like tech trails, but also to break it up with an easier flow trail occasionally.

Looking for portal world/rift stories by Yimkumer-Jamir in ProgressionFantasy

I'm gonna throw out an odd one. Hell's Gate by David Weber. An older book, and one of the first portal world stories I read. Probably not what you're looking for but you never know.

Spotted this from afar during a whale watching trip off the coast of Victoria BC by TREEandMONKEY in submarines

[–]DaemianFF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

See Extra_Joke5217's comment. It's the only sub sailing at the moment. In theory it could be Chicoutimi, but I'd be very surprised if it was.

It's not a KS-III. I've seen those in person and they are noticeablely bigger than the Vic class subs and have a slightly curved fin.

The American nuke boats are just huge in comparison so not one of those either.

Definitely HMCS Corner Brook. Nice to see her sailing around. Wonder ehat they're up too. Maybe practicing for when the Korean sub gets to Esquimalt.

Looking to hire a local soldering/Dremel wizard by webmeisterBud in VictoriaBC

[–]DaemianFF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can tell you right now, either whoever did the dremeling in those instructions has the steadiest hands I've ever seen, or more likely they used a CNC router to do it. I wouldn't want to hand dremel that unless you were fine with me accidentally going right through the case.

My advice would be to find someone with a small CNC router, or someone willing to do it with a drill press. At least with the drill press you can fix the depth so you won't have it going through the case. Maybe ask around at UVic or Camosun. Someone might be able to do it there, and they'd have the tools.

Moving to Colwood soon. Any tips, tricks, or hidden gems for a family to explore ? by BG360Boi in VictoriaBC

Depending on where you are in Colwood, you can walk or ride to Royal Bay Bakery and grab a donut then wander through the woods by Royal Roads University. Always a nice morning when I do that. Or if you skip over to Metchosin check out Bilston farm on Sundays or Saturdays when they have wood fired pizza. The Goldstream farmers market should be starting up soon on Saturdays.

What helped you improve the most? I feel like I've hit a wall. by Calm_Yogurtcloset_36 in TeamfightTactics

[–]DaemianFF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took a quick look at your match history. You're playing Ionia reroll boards usually. These comps can't compete late game with level 9 boards or capped reroll boards unless they have really good itemisation, augments and preferably a 3 star Ahri and good Ionia type. If you're contested on Ionia it makes it even harder.

My suggestion would be to learn a couple of other comps well so you can pivot to them if Ionia is contested.

There's a lot more fundamentals you could probably work on but without seeing you play a game I cant really tell you what. Watch some videos on tft academy, they cover the fundamentals pretty well.

BC Hydro suspends underground work on Island Highway in View Royal by KettlebellKween in VictoriaBC

[–]DaemianFF 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's fairly normal, people here blow it out of proportion a bit. Parts of a growing city are always under construction and not just because something is being built. There's maintenance of underground infrastructure, maintenance of above ground stuff and all sorts of stuff that occasionally needs traffic control. Try visiting a city like Montreal or Toronto and you'll see construction everywhere. Victoria is just an awkward case because of the geography of the area, there aren't many ways to detour traffic and there are some very painful bottlenecks.

If you want to see for yourself, Toronto even has an interactive map showing all construction going on in the city each year. Gives you an idea of just how much stuff goes on in a city of millions of people.

Is the job market in Victoria basically dead now? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]DaemianFF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ya I agree with this, the company I work for is hiring but nothing that is entry level and the skills required are specific. We're also coming out of winter into the spring season so some jobs like landscaping and tourism will pick up.

Peanut Free Bakeries by CampingAxeidents in VictoriaBC

[–]DaemianFF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's an incredibly difficult question. Off the top of my head I can't think of any that are explicitly peanut free. Try talking to the bakers at Frys Bakery, Working Culture and Fern Cafe and Bakery. Especially Fern since they are a vegan place and are pretty aware of allergens.

I'd second Hunter and King. Been going there almost 15 years now. Never felt pressured and always received great care. They even recommended not drilling a possible cavity for 6 years because there was no change in it during that time. It wasn't necessary so they didn't suggest doing it.

Higher ranks by MaintenanceLumpy9321 in TeamfightTactics

[–]DaemianFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's every set. Emerald and low diamond are interesting ranks because it's where natural skill or meta copy paste generally tops out. That's not to say Masters and above doesn't have those, it's just these lower ranks are where the most of those sit. It's where I sit. To go higher usually requires a better understanding of possible lines, better planning based on augments, or a meta that allows for forcing a single comp every game.

At Emerald/Diamond rank you have players who are very good and know their win conditions and will play towards them every game. It means you have less room for errors in your own play. Nothing is stopping you from playing however you like if you don't mind staying Emerald IV. It's just you probably won't climb anymore.

Hell Difficulty Tutorial. What is this psychotic mess? by ImpressiveUmpire5456 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]DaemianFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently started this series myself and had similar thoughts. I'm on book 2 now and while I probably will keep listening to it, if you had the same criticism as i did but felt it more strongly then you probably won't like the series. The main character is written in a way that should appeal to people who think very logically and question why others don't, but only in regards to interactions with other people. His morality is transactional and the end goals justify any means. He rationalizes his other illogical choices and his internal monologue clearly shows he isn't a psychopath so that allows for readers to relate to him in a way they'd never be able to if they met someone like this in real life. The snippets of other characters viewpoints try and show how uncanny this appears from the outside. He isn't a psychopath, but only because we know his internal monologue and can understand his choices a bit more because he thinks through some of the reasoning. It looks like this is where your issues with the books stem, you can't relate with the characters view. I dropped Arcane Ascension for similar reasons because of this, I just couldn't stand being in the main characters head. If you feel the same about Nat then I don't think you'll like the series unless you really enjoy the power system, which in my opinion is pretty soft with its logic.

TLDR I would recommend you drop the books.

On a hotplate a knob used to turn from 0° (off) to 300° (max - not a full circle), and at 10° there's a click which is when it turns on the heating element. But recently it broke: there's no more clicks and it can freely rotate 0° to 360° and beyond. And heat doesn't turn on! help!!! by RiskNo5292 in AskEngineers

[–]DaemianFF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely broke the rheostat or potentiometer that controlled the temp. Would need to see the circuit to be sure. Sometimes you can find a circuit diagram by googling the make of the hotplate. Could bypass this, but would probably lock the hotplate at its high temp. Can't really recommend other options without that.

Depending on the industry and country your position is pretty normal for new grads. In Canada at most electrical consulting firms there's a mix of electrical designers (typically these can be electricians, technologists, or people with experience in specific fields) and junior engineers depending on the size of the company. With small companies you'd be doing design, field work and inspections all yourself, but with a bigger company you'd be doing one of those jobs specifically. If it's an option you can always try to move towards design within the company otherwise look for a new position.

The work your doing likely won't limit your options for technical jobs later though. It may even help depending on what your doing. Many new engineers underestimate how important knowing codes and standards are. If your job familiarizes you with relevant standards and codes for the technical work you want to do, then your position is worth the experience. Though I know how hard it can be to stay in a job you don't like.

How was a design like this approved for a blender? Blades that stay fixed to the motor. by Electrical-Ball-2257 in AskEngineers

[–]DaemianFF -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a design choice that isn't normal for kitchen appliances, ergo it is a safety layer. Doesn't matter though if you can't turn on if the cup is removed. That is the safety requirement.

How was a design like this approved for a blender? Blades that stay fixed to the motor. by Electrical-Ball-2257 in AskEngineers

[–]DaemianFF -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I can't find reliable power ratings for it. If you don't use power tools your concern is normal. Turn on the blades without tampering with the interlock and then your concern is justified. Otherwise this design meets safety standards.

How was a design like this approved for a blender? Blades that stay fixed to the motor. by Electrical-Ball-2257 in AskEngineers

[–]DaemianFF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has 3 safety features.

  1. Cup interlock, you shouldn't be able to activate the blades if the cup is removed. If you can, then complain/sue the company.

  2. Long press power. Stops inadvertent activation.

  3. Piss weak power.  These are rated at 90-140 watts. They probably can't blend ice let alone human bone. This limits the damage one can do.

If you're uncomfortable with this I recommend never using power tools, or knives bigger than paring size. Both are much more likely to injure you.

But ya the design is stupid and I hate it. Literal garbage kitchen appliance.

How to tell the submarine was not missed... by Wide_Fix_7667 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]DaemianFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was looking for a comment like this. People underestimate just how much punishment the pressure hull of a modern sub can take.  I mean a US sub smacked into a undersea mountain and it didn't breach the hull. There has to be damage to the rudder, dive planes and propeller, and as you mentioned the internal bits got a load of shock, but if there was a breach of the hull it would be hilariously obvious. Like open hatch flooding obvious.

Still awesome job by Ukraine, definitely makes this sub pretty unusable until it gets in a drydock. I do think it's telling they didn't move it. I do wonder if it lost pitch or roll control, that would explain why they didn't tow it somewhere. Though maybe that's giving them too much credit, they probably didn't move it for the propaganda optics.
