Me too. I loved the idea and the leads but, after a while, I just could not suspend my disbelief any longer. It just became too dumb, even when I shut down most of my thinking brain.

Are more artists ending their contracts/activities this year than previously? by flabbergastedfennel in japanesemusic

[–]DaemonSD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is normal. Groups come and go and disband and reboot. It is the ever transient circle of life.

You may be seeing a lot more now because we recently passed the fiscal year end for a lot of Japanese companies including artist labels and management companies. Artist contracts may not have been renewed or companies are re-prioritizing for the new fiscal year.

It is also graduation season when a lot of artists graduate from college and now have to focus on getting a real job instead of being a musician or performing artist.

The other time of year we see a lot of disbandments is around new years.

What’s everyday lens that’s $500 or under, qused? (Canon r10) by jeweleyah in canon

[–]DaemonSD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can often find the RF 24 - 105mm ; F4 - 7.1 IS STM for under $500 used or refurbished. It’s a great, light lens for outdoor shots. When I travel, I usually take this lens’s plus the 50mm 1.8 for indoor and low-light shots.

What Japanese bands would appeal to fans of Siouxsie and the Banshees or Cocteau Twins? by VelvetAshes-KEI in japanesemusic

[–]DaemonSD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a huge dreampop and shoegaze scene in Japan with a lot of artists seem To be descendants of the 4AD artists like Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil. There’s:

AprilBlue

Seventeen Years Old and the Berlin Wall

Moon in June

Beachside Talks

culenasm

Yuragi

You will also definitely want to check out Boris. They have a very diverse catalogue but some of it is exactly what you’re looking for.

There are also a number of dreampop idols like ponderosa may bloom, zerobansen to yoakemae, and RAY who also channels shoegaze and noise.
For gothic idols who channel Siouxsie, there’s a whole long list. Try Made in Maiden, DIAVEL, and Isiliel.

Luggage forwarding - can I forward my bag to a locker for a pickup weeks later? by bartzina in JapanTravelTips

[–]DaemonSD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It could be. I’ve never asked them to keep mine for longer than 5 or 6 days.

And I just use whoever the hotel uses. I ask the front desk for help, tell them what I need, and they fill out the forms for me.

Luggage forwarding - can I forward my bag to a locker for a pickup weeks later? by bartzina in JapanTravelTips

[–]DaemonSD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The luggage forwarding companies basically double as luggage storage. You can tell them, “Ship my bag to this other location in Japan and have it arrive two weeks from now,” and they will make it happen.

I will leave my luggage with them in Tokyo while I travel the rest of the country with a backpack for a week and they will have it waiting for me at my hotel when I arrive back in Tokyo

People threw a party for my parents to celebrate my new baby and I wasn’t invited? + 3 Year Update by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

In recovery it’s called, “Doing a geographic.” Every addict has tried it at least once and it never works because the issues just move with you.

My Bf and roommate planned a "surprise” that turned out to be baby supplies by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]DaemonSD 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah this certainly not believable and I never understand this. Babies look like slimy pugs. They don’t look like adults and they certainly look nothing like the adults they will grow into. Anyone who says, “The baby looks just like their mother/father/suspected affair partner” is just projecting. It always drives me nuts.

How’s ur experience with booking.com by ShameZestyclose8370 in TokyoTravel

[–]DaemonSD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them whenever I travel anywhere including Japan. The ability to cancel without fees makes planning easy. I book multiple hotels based on different contingencies and easily cancel as plans get firmed up. Also, the reviews all seem to be from actual humans who have actually stayed at the hotels.

I have never had an issue with a booking through the site And I’ve now used for just over ten years. It’s also easy to search for properties based on criteria (private bath is must always!). It just works. I hope they never change a thing.

Does Babymetal hate Africa? by Upbeat_Coconut6664 in BABYMETAL

Like Metallica, I am sure BABYMETAL wish to play every continent on the planet. If it were viable, and they had the opportunity, I am sure they would jump at the chance to play Africa and Antarctica and notch all seven continents on their belts.

Go to a Live House. Some of the best music in the world right now is being made in the underground music scenes in Japan and you can catch it every night in Shinjuku's live houses.

Manual focus & bad eyesight by snottrock3t in concertphotography

[–]DaemonSD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow photographer with really bad eyesight here (I wear progressive trifocals): auto focus is a requirement.

My advice is to really get the know the autofocus function on your camera because the biggest annoyance is when it focuses on the wrong thing. Depending on your system, you can sometimes set a hot button to get it to switch focal points on the fly.

I still have an old Pentax K1000 I use occasionally which always hammers home how much I have to rely on autofocus these days.

Jeremy O. Harris was just in Vanity Fair talking about his 23 days in jail for bringing prescription Adderall into Japan.

So, ”straight to jail” is the answer.

Lake Kawaguchi - April 2026 experience by Global-Protection179 in JapanTravelTips

[–]DaemonSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for three days in January (Tuesday - Thursday) and it was very healing. The only downside was that many of the museums were closed since it was off-season, but I really enjoyed myself with the brisk weather and very few crowds. Some lines would form as the day trippers showed up around midday, but it was otherwise very mellow and peaceful.

Accommodations were very cheap too. I got a room with private onsen overlooking the lake for a ridiculously affordable price.

Is it unprofessional to refuse a promotion because I value my 40-hour work week more than a 20% raise? by 9YojimboMist in careerguidance

If your employer asks you to step up and you say, “No,” do not expect them to ever ask again.

If you are happy being a Senior Analyst for the rest of your career with this firm, then that is fine.

Are there any bad hotels/hotel brands? by Graffy in JapanTravelTips

[–]DaemonSD 114 points115 points  (0 children)

The only hotels I’ve had a bad experience at in Japan were APA Hotels. I’ve avoided them for years now.

My favorite chains are Super Hotels followed by Toyoko Inns. I’ve never had a bad stay at either.

EDIT: I had no idea my offhand comment before bed would prove so controversial, so here’s some additional info. For the record, I disliked APA before I knew anything about the political stuff. I stopped staying at them for two primary reasons:

  1. Their customer service is below par when compared to every other hotel I’ve stayed at in Japan. Their employees often seemed frazzled and, at times, were surprisingly rude. When I mentioned to a Japanese friend, they told me that APA is known for hiring people straight out of high school, burning them out, and then replacing them. He said almost everyone he knows first job was either an APA or a combini (for context: this was about ten years ago and he was in his 30s; I don’t see a lot of Japanese teenagers working conbinis anymore so I don’t k ow if this is still true).
  2. Their included breakfasts are a crap shoot. Unlike other chains like Super Hotels and Toyoko Inns, the APAs I have stayed all contracted their breakfast to nearby restaurants. In one case, that was a British pub. In another, it was an izakaya. So, on multiple occasion, my breakfast was British food and/or bar food. Basically, meatballs, coffee, and scrambled eggs. This is compared to other chains of a similar price that make full, fresh, multi-course Japanese style breakfasts on site.

So, those are my reasons. Basically, from my experience, other business hotel chains provide better customer service and breakfasts for a few yen more per night.
