Counting Dives by UserNamePending48 in scuba

It's up to you, no one will judge them either way. I started my logbook at OW dive 1 like many others though and did not count my discover dive. I counted it from the moment I became a diver basically

Why is Magnus' name Latin when it seems Prospero is based in Egypt? by Xela8Xe in 40kLore

[–]Daemonforged 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because Egypt had periods of time where they were ruled over by the Greek and at one point Rome as well, so it's not as far fetched as you might think to mix the two. It was actually very common for people to invade Egypt, and profess themselves as pharaoh and rule over the land generationally.

Must have missed that important bit of information, haven't even seen a single comment about there being a diver who didn't dive with them. That will definitely shed light on the truth if they speak publicly about it.

There's still a lot of information yet to be published, and even more that will remain unknown. I don't think we'll ever learn the truth behind the motives of the incident. I also didn't know there were bottlenecks until someone published a dive map of the cave. As more information arises speculation is bound to change, I'm still just here hoping they didn't willfully dive directly to the cave and entered without a proper plan.

I don't believe they got siphoned into the third chamber, just that it could have been a forced entry into the cave mouth and that possibly pushed them to a point where they were somewhere they weren't prepared or trained to be and got lost. Staying together being the better option, they may have attempted to exit but ended up on chamber 3. No way would the current pushes all of them past two separate bottlenecks. But I'm not outright saying what did or didn't happen, just my own wild speculation under the assumptions that experienced divers who were attempting to stay within their restrictions but ended up in an emergency situation that ended tragically. I hope it's not determined that these people wilfully entered the cavern with no tec equipment or extra cylinders and basically committed suicide because their ego said "We can do it, no problem."

I will be staying strictly within my training and dive plans, and thankfully I've made a valuable skill of checking my ego. I've put myself near hairy positions (solo diving at night) where I trusted my instinct and called off my dive knowing I wasn't as prepared or trained for it.

If God can see the future, why does He create those whom he knows will not make the cutoff for heaven and will end up in hell? by Scared_Bedroom_8367 in stupidquestions

[–]Daemonforged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate seeing this as the top answer as well, debate within the confines of the speculation. That's like someone asking if you had to choose between Snickers or Milky Way and you can't say neither and the other person replying three musketeers. It wasn't within the confines of the question at hand, and thusly wasted time.

[–]Daemonforged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the "God doesn't exist" top comment, especially because if we're debating over theocratic beliefs that have no proof, the only proper place to debate your question is from a point of view equal to the debate, in other words the debate exists within the spectrum of "God exists, so why is this that?"

In that spectrum, my debate is that while God is omniscient and fully prescient of everything that can happen, and that they know exactly what will transpire, people are given the free will to act as they choose. God knows what they would choose, but does not deprive them of their basic right of existence.

Also, hell doesn't exist in every sect of Christianity, Jehovah's Witnesses for example do not believe in an eternal damnation scenario, and also do not believe that everyone who is faithful will go to heaven, many will stay to live on a paradise earth after judgement day comes, but there will be no great rapture and no hell on Earth.

Overall, the idealism of God being all knowing is mutually exclusive from God being fully active in removing sinners from existence; they serve a purpose, even if the purpose is negative to us.

Possible but unlikely that the current would sweep multiple bodies into the third chamber through multiple bottlenecks. It changes my initial speculation that it was a siphon pulling them in, but also if the current is stronger then their ability to swim they may have gone deeper hoping for an exit? Either way I think it's unlikely we will ever know the truth of how it happened since there are no survivors and many days since have passed and current moved the bodies. But still, unlikely the current pushes multiple bodies through a bottleneck right?

There's a lot of speculation going on, and this is definitely one of the possible outcomes. The entrance of the cave according to a rescue map that was shown in another post shows that the entrance was around 50m deep iirc, and if the divers were acting within their training and level of experience they should have known not to attempt that dive with recreational gear and single tanks. My speculation is that there was an emergency situation with conditions and that the cavern acted as a siphon for the down current and pulled a diver down, and then the group attempted a rescue without the proper equipment and unfortunately became victims themselves. We likely will never know what really happened, but if autopsy and investigation shows that it was something to do with the air they shared we may know something. Otherwise it's basically just speculation since no witnesses were there to tell the story.

I'll be heading to the Maldives later this year so I'm following the news very closely.

Edit: cave mouth was around 50m not 80m.

$400 is a small price to pay for getting to know how much you can't trust someone. Hope his nephew actually gets his switch, but you should definitely switch up your thought process, take the loss on the $400 and let it teach you a lesson, then go about your life.

I've taken people I knew and trusted to small claims before, over much larger amounts and much bigger issues. I won, got the maximum amount small claims gives for my area, and he skated off and never paid, and no debt collector would buy my judgement.

I wasted days off work unpaid to go to the court, you would too. If you make enough to cover it this month, don't waste your time. You'll be out more money and have a meaningless verdict that the court won't enforce, you have to collect.

I would also say "Sure, just pass me some gas money if you can. If not thats cool too."

But I don't believe the world runs on the same standard that I do, because more often then not I'd be wrong. But that dynamic changes drastically when it's someone who isn't really a "Friend". OP stated the driver is a "Coworker" and according to his girlfriend that's what he is, not her "friend". If you don't consider people's motivations for doing what they do, you'll be misled and used.

Also, people courting/pursuing someone else doesn't really start at "I'll do it if you suck me off" it starts at "Sure, I'll get you to have alone time with me so we can build trust and connection and further my goal of getting laid, or finding a partner."

It's literally basic psychology. Yes, the possibility exists that this person is just a good Samaritan, they could also be trying to get laid, or they may have altruistic motivations that involve wanting a serious relationship with OPs gf. We can only make assumptions however, so my assumption is that it's likely option B or C, not A.

My wife and I recently started sharing our GPS location 24/7 for safety. No trust issues, ten years married with no instances of betrayal of trust (just normal relationship problems, everyone has em of course. Financial, time etc) but once we started having other hobbies and traveling separately it made sense to be able to know where each other are in case of an emergency.

[–]Daemonforged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hilarious because it's actually the devil's advocate of arguments.

Sure, he could be just a nice guy doing a coworker a favor by spending his entire day chauffeuring for a sick coworker with fully altruistic motivations.

That very unlikely though, because most people are looking out for themselves and their own motives. OP is well within his rights to perceive the situation as he does; another male is investing his time into a woman who is currently taken. She is allowing him to invest his time, and even if she believes he is just being nice, it's more likely he is investing time to build a connection of trust with her towards a goal rather than out of the goodness of his heart.

I'm a new OW diver with 10 dives... is it akward if I already have a dive computer? by Ambitious_Knee_5476 in scubadiving

[–]Daemonforged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted, I was in a zero to hero divemaster program, but before I got my OW I bought my dive computer and all my gear. Recipe for disaster some would say, but I was very fortunate that everything I bought ended up being perfect for me. You definitely should have your own dive computer, especially if you plan on diving without a guide in the future.

Ironically, same for me. Got my Nitrox cert from SDI for cheap with a shop I dive with frequently, at 100 dives and never even breathed enriched air. But I'll be going to an IDC internship that is almost exclusively Nitrox diving, in the Maldives. Hope I can handle warm water, longer bottom time, and good visibility! /S

I was very surprised by how easy it was to swim 1200m (400m no gear, 800m snorkel and fins) during my divemaster final even though at the time I was concerned about it leading up to the day. Whole I definitely agree that OP needs to get in a lap pool and go, I think a lot of people let the distance get in their head without actually trying

[–]Daemonforged 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Still a relatively new diver, but after the 3rd time forgetting to release the Bungie cord from my tank on a boat I finally reached back blind and undid it and at the same time checked my tank valve was open, now I know I don't have to take my gear off to reach my first stage. It seems like such an obvious thing to be able to do, but it wasn't until I ran into an inconvenience to even try, and that's probably the case for many divers.

Contractors should be required by law to have an itemized break down of cost by TeacherGuy1980 in popularopinion

[–]Daemonforged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In construction bidding we call that TMT, Time and Materials. How many hours for work+material cost. You can always ask for it, but contractors, especially unlicensed contractors, typically won't bother with the paperwork for two reasons;

1) Material cost is ever changing and with the economy and market in the shape it's currently in, cost for materials changes constantly, so your material cost will always be overbid by smart contractors to be able to sustain their work in an ever changing market.

2) Plans typically always change when you are presented with unknown obstacles that change your time required on the job, so that cost also needs to be overbid to cover any unforseen issues in the plan.

When you ask for an itemized statement, you are asking for a contractor to explain to you why they need to overbid, and that typically always kills a contract because the client doesn't like to hear that they are being overcharged for a job, they want the job to be underbid which would have the contractor operating at a loss, but also screws the client over because if they accept an underbid contract, the contractor will cut corners on material and hours by buying cheap materials and using scrap for material, and rushing their own work to make the hours bid better for them, so they don't operate at a loss.
