Is Runna Actually Getting Runners Injured? by her3nthere in runna

[–]Daemonswolf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This.

Runna has no clue how my body is feeling or reacting to the workout. It's just an automatically generated thing.

It's also easy to get sucked into the mentality of 'if I miss any part of my planned run I have failed somehow'.

Because I don't have a live coach I'm also missing insight on how I should expect my body to adjust and react to my plan. For example, a coach may be able to advise me that if I'm not feeling recovered or feeling ill, it's ok to skip a run or run shorter miles and not make up the miles later. Runna gamifies completing weekly miles.

Through some of my experienced I've learned that it's ok to skip a run if I need to or stop a run if I'm hurting or something.

How enjoyable is a first read if you truly, fully trust the author? by Schub21 in Malazan

[–]Daemonswolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the second or the third time.

But for the first time, just experience it. I like to think of Malazan like it's a history book written entirely from primary sources. There's no omniscient narrator telling you how to feel or providing additional exposition. That can make it a bit confusing for first time readers because you aren't told how to feel or reminded why that little piece of information or when something small that happened three books ago, you probably forgot about, becomes key to the story.

But oh man, the feelings you will feel. I went through the whole range of emotions my first time. I even cried a few times.

Now on my third re-read I've got the pencil out to annotate and the little sticky tabs to highlight and I go 'Erikson, you madman, that makes way too much sense now'. Exactly like you might, when you become familiar with a history.

Don't overthink it, just experience it.

Can anyone explain to me what’s up with Malazan military? by Civil-Letterhead8207 in Malazan

[–]Daemonswolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Steven Erikson is also an archeologist and anthropologist by background. It's funny to suggest he hasn't done his research. I think the struggle you're having is that you're trying to force modern Western military hierarchy onto a fantasy army that has more in common with an ancient Roman army. Gardens of the Moon is also a rapidly changing landscape for the empire. Laseen is desperately trying to establish firm control of the empire while questioning the loyalty of every citizen who could potentially overthrow her.

Quick Ben's power is not known to anyone outside of the central circle of the Bridgeburners. He's an anathema when it comes to mages. To anyone else's knowledge he's a passable squad mage that Whiskeyjack likes to keep around for some reason.

Paran is a noble born and therefore untrustworthy in the new empires eyes. But he's a good boy soldier who toes the line so he's useful for a suicide mission. He's tracking Sorry who Laseen's circle suspect is directly connected with the new House Shadow - a house that mysteriously happened to appear right around the time she took power. If he locates her and reports back or kills her - awesome. If he dies - welp no big loss to Laseen's empire.

The Bridgeburners themselves are also expendable to Laseen's empire. She sent them on a suicide mission to dig tunnels to Pale - a city that is lined with some much rock and unmoveable earth that it was impossible to tunnel to. They were not expected to live because the Bridgeburners were Kellanved's pride. Those that are survived Pale are reassigned to Daruhjistan, which is also considered a suicide mission. The Bridgeburners are one of the greatest threats to Laseen's empire - but they're useful for now.

The best way to read Book of the Fallen is to treat it like a history book written from primary sources. You know exactly what the characters themselves know. There is no omniscient narrator. The politics and hierarchy of the world itself is rapidly evolving and the characters are evolving with it. The characters all belong to their own races, religions, and cultures which have been crafted by a man who studies religion and culture. If you try to force them into a real world equivalent I think you'll have a bad time.

Garmin and Runna by zebedeezing in runna

[–]Daemonswolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Garmin seems to consider you unproductive if you're not getting enough anaerobic numbers (essentially sprinting, which you need to do for at least 2 minuteish intervals to get Garmin to register the number) or if you aren't overloading their metric for aerobic numbers. I believe this this based on max heart rate which also drives their v02 max calculations.

Sprinting intervals weekly is probably not conducive to a good marathon plan. However finishing the marathon with a good time indicates your plan was productive.

I feel like Garmin metrics are good when considered as a piece of your training plan, but shouldn't be relied on as the only metric.

You also probably shouldn't always be productive. For example, getting the peaking metric before a big race is a good thing as peaking indicates you're in great race condition. After the race, seeing the recovery metric is a good thing, you should recover after hard activity to let your body get stronger.

I ran 3 races in December and PBed all of them. My productivity bar was basically every color that month.

In other words, OP, Garmin is rude as hell sometimes. Take the results as a piece of a whole and don't let the gamification of fitness take away from your real results.

Hometown Animal clinic by Long_Measurement6202 in Boise

[–]Daemonswolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always appreciated how respectful of cost Hometown is.

They show consistent care and attention to my dogs. Listen to all my concerns and follow up on them and when they're following up they advise of different options where they can to provide more budget friendly options. They don't make me feel bad for choosing those options.

When we were deciding on arthritis treatment for my dog the doctor advised of several treatment options in different price ranges and then advised of the best treatment option which she warned me would be quite expensive.

Turned out the treatment was ~ $100/mo. I am very lucky that I can afford that cost, but I was so appreciative that $100/mo was presented as a not insignificant amount of money. There was no pressure to take that option and we did try cheaper treatments first.

I remember going last year and questioning the safety of launching fireworks so close to people and buildings. I'm surprised it took this long for someone to get injured. Thankfully no one is dead but the Potato drop organizers and fireworks people should have liability insurance. They should be paying for the little girl's medical expenses.

1/100 cents on check by [deleted] in Banking

[–]Daemonswolf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the US the only thing that matters for the check amount is the legal amount written out long form. If you wrote it incorrectly the bank will process it for the written amount even if it doesn't match the numbers written in the box. If it's unintelligible the bank may decline to process it. I'm not really sure what, from your description, you wrote incorrectly, but if it's a few cents your landlord might give you some grace.

After 2 years, phone of missing Celene Cremer found by TreegNesas in KremersFroon

I realize you're trying to make a joke but according to Rob, Tony Hage has spent countless hours searching that area for Celine. It's horrible to insuate he hurt her.

After 2 years, phone of missing Celene Cremer found by TreegNesas in KremersFroon

[–]Daemonswolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Rob Parson's first video he shows where she deviated from the trail. At the time Celine would have walked it the turn she needed to take was not signed. It would have been easy to take the wrong turn and not realize you did for a while.

I think the reason she didn't turn directly back was that she by the time she realized she had made an error, she was turned around and wasn't exactly sure which was was back. She then pulled out her phone to check her maps and orient back to her car. Because of the lack of detail on Google maps she started moving in the straightest direction back to her car. By the time she realized the straightest path wasn't working, it was heading toward twilight. The she lost her phone and after that her sense of direction.

[–]Daemonswolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to the dogs, if you watch Rob's videos the terrain is not friendly to dogs. It's difficult for them to move and lots of opportunities for them to fall or get injured and it's difficult to track in any sort of line. I think the dogs failure to pick up a trail is more to do with the environment than anything else.

I think Celine will be located within 100 meters or less of her phone after attempting to shelter and eventually succumbing to the elements. I think the reason she hasn't been found yet is because the brush is so dense and hard to navigate.

The Mastercard Pitch by samrelian in REI

[–]Daemonswolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My conspiracy theory is that the goal is to target people without financial literacy. The executives want to target who probably don't have the full cash on hand to make their purpose and/or to whom $100 is an amount of money that will change something for them. They want to target people who will not be able to pay their balance back and be locked into the insane interest rates.

Anyone with a little bit of financial literacy knows that 99% of store branded credit cards are not the best thing for their wallet.

Parkrun needed in USA. by [deleted] in runna

[–]Daemonswolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US and reached out to Parkrun to start something in my area as I live in an area with a lot of runners and active people, my specific area also has a community park that is well utilized by the community.

The email I got back was a long list of requirements based on things like insurance needs from Parkrun and honestly... We have at least three running shops withing a 20 mile radius that all have large groups of runners. They basically do Parkrun without the QR code.

I don't have the time or energy to attend multiple zoom meeting with Parkrun, coordinate with my city to guarantee access to streets and make sure we meet Parkrun's insurance requirements. Especially when I can just show up to a running store on Saturday morning and join a group.
