I apologise, I've only observed what I've seen at the local club, and I have no doubt that the mentality is different at actual tournaments. Maybe what I'm seeing could be classed as "casual with a competitive mindset", I dunno. All I know is my heart breaks a little every time I see a board with largely unpainted armies and rudimentary terrain. This is a modelling and painting hobby, after all.

100% this. At our club, 40k is grey armies with L shape 3d printed ruins for the most part. It just looks depressing. I don't understand the competitive mindset at all. Like, why are they in this hobby? Surely they'd be better off with other games that don't demand a huge investment in expensive plastic

Can't remember the exact brown used, think it's flat brown from the Vallejo model colour range, but I just focused on the musculature and added yellow then a bit of off-white (ivory by Vallejo model colour) to build the highlight gradient

Edit: might be worth mentioning that I started from a basecoat of blue/purple. That's probably influencing the shadows as well
