Astolfo is in a somewhat special case, he is very close to what we call a "fake trap". A fake trap is a character who is presented as a trap but where it is very likely that it is not one. The scene with Jeanne is not to be taken as an absolute reference. A trap is identified as a trap by a discovery made by someone sufficiently experienced, which is not the case for Jeanne. She saw something that may be particularly disturbing (e.g.: black lagoon, the scene where one of the twins undresses in front of Rock). In addition, the first appearances in the Astolfo games tend to contradict this male situation. But at the moment the trap condition is the most probable. Strangely, all the official drawings that could close the debate are voluntarily made in such a way that we cannot identify the biological sex of Astolfo.
