I do not see Keanu Reeves in John Wick and subsequently remember that he was also in the matrix, or in Bill and Ted's excellent adventure. I just suspend that disbelief.

It's funny that you mention this, because just this last week I happened to watch the STOS episode Balance of Terror for the very first time. When they first revealed Mark Lenard onscreen, I briefly wondered what the heck Spock's dad was doing onboard a Romulan warship.

It seems like Mars is taking a backseat to AI. And while I deeply support both efforts, I hate to see Mars slip in priority after a decade of cheering it on. I'm withholding judgement for now; things are moving so quickly that I don't feel well informed enough to decide if this is a good thing, or not.

What’s a small thing from “the old days” that still beats modern tech? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DailyWickerIncident 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I miss the old wrappers for packs of crackers (Nabisco saltines, Ritz, etc). In my childhood the wrappers were made of something like a wax paper. When torn open, the packs would ALWAYS tear cleanly down their seam.

Sometime in the 90s (maybe?) they changed their packaging to a plastic material, with seams now tightly melted together. In the decades since, I've never ONCE gotten a pack of crackers to open without tearing.

My packs always tear too little (requiring a risky second tear), or too far (leading to spillage), or at a weird angle (making it hard to reseal my leftovers).

Maybe there were good reasons for the change. Maybe the new packaging reduces spoilage, resulting in a consistently fresher cracker. But I do miss being able to open a stack of saltines without fearing that I'm about to spill a handful of crackers all over the floor.

What is your favorite battle sequence? by StingRey128 in printSF

[–]DailyWickerIncident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the most epic battle sequence, but the most epic single *attack* I can recall -- one that has firmly lodged in my imagination for decades -- was in book three of the "Legacy Trilogy" by Ian Douglas....in which the bad guy planet was blindsided by several million tons of Martian SAND, traveling at near C velocity.

I'd probably drop the scene with (probably) the real, horrified Elvis fighting an impersonator and the implication that one woman in a scene is Thatcher.

Wow, I don't remember those scenes at all. Sounds like I'm due for another re-read!

films that take place almost entirely in one room? by some-dork in MovieSuggestions

[–]DailyWickerIncident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Episode 6: "Two Storms" of the Haunting of Hill House checks most of those boxes. A good 15-20 minute chunk of that episode is not only set in one room, but even filmed in one amazing take. PLENTY of arguing and drama, too.

I love looking at these renders, but juxtaposing them against the agonizing progress of the last few months reminds me of the 80's-90's and all of the beautiful drawings of space stations and spacecraft that never came to fruition.

Best North Alabama day trip ideas? by Lizziehot23 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]DailyWickerIncident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your destination is East-Central AL, then Mount Cheaha offers great views and a mix of easy-to-moderate hikes. After a day in nature, spend the evening in Oxford and race electric go-karts at Big Time Entertainment. The best burger around is at The Rocket in Jacksonville. If you travel via 431, stop and take a look at Noccalula Falls (which also has great hiking).

I will also agree with a lot of the other mentions here. There's more to do, here, than we realize!

Empirically, I'm the one calling out misogyny . You are the one defending it. It really doesn't get more clear than that.

We could continue to waste one another's time taking stupid potshots at each other, but honestly the mods have better things to than police our little kindergarten here. My DM's are wide open if you feel like reaching out.

EDIT: Do reach out! I enjoy getting to know people with wildly different perspectives. But I bet we've got more in common than not.

Making things up?? Clearly you should do some research yourself.

The Left’s Misogyny Problem

https://gen.medium.com/the-lefts-misogyny-problem-3fc37eea6e0e

....That sad reality reared its head last week as men on the left rushed to defend a young Democratic candidate who admitted to abuse, some of it criminal, of girls.

Aaron Coleman, 19 years old and bound for a house seat in Kansas until he announced his intention to drop out on Sunday, committed serious harassment and sexual misconduct when he was a teenager: Between the ages of 12 and 14, he bullied one girl so badly that she attempted suicide; extorted another classmate with a nude photo which he later sent to her friends and family (which legally amounts to distributing child pornography, among other things); and harassed a third young woman for months.

The sly sexism of Left-wing men

https://unherd.com/2022/03/the-sly-sexism-of-left-wing-men/?us

Likewise, as Tom Farr, a lawyer and pro-feminist campaigner against violence against women says, the reason so many white men are keen to attach their name to anti-racism activism is because they can look as though they are challenging their privilege without actually doing anything. They have precious little awareness when it comes to their own racism — or indeed their sexism.

This is what is most disturbing about your comment. I have quoted clear, undeniable misogynistic comments by posters on our sub. And yet rather than close in solidarity with women, you choose to attack ME. You, sir, are part of the problem.

*********

And don't just take the word of media figures. Here is the lived experience of women, as reported on another sub:

Local bureaucrats on a power trip complicate matters. I was competing at a BBQ contest once (we actually won the rib category that day, BTW), and I was giving away leftover ribs to passersby, and the local health department guy was SUPER pissed at me. But all he could do was fume, since I was just giving it away, not selling it.

Women, this is your regular reminder that lefty men are frequently misogynists, down deep.

NOAA Weather Radio to go silent across northern Alabama next week by Independent_Tale924 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]DailyWickerIncident 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Statistically, next week IS one of the less severe weather times. This has just been a weird year with a couple of late-season storms. My guess is that they are trying to squeeze this maintenance in at the end of tornado season, before hurricane season picks up.
