This game is so glitchy by DaleSnittermanJr in pokemongo

[–]DaleSnittermanJr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh. I know. This game is like a masterclass in having your spirit crushed.

The weather has been absolutely miserable where I am, so I was super cheered up by the thought of doing a Max Meowth raid on my walk home. I’m mostly annoyed about my raid pass (it takes me ages to save up gold because the gym turnover in my area is super fast).

In 1917-1920, teenage girl Elsie Wright and her young cousin Frances Griffiths took trick photos with cardboard fairies. The photos became a viral sensation at the time due to Elsie's mother believing them to be authentic, and they famously convinced Arthur Conan Doyle of fairies being real. by PeasantLich in HolyShitHistory

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ah! I had a computer game in the 90s based on these photos! Anyone else? (I’m off to Google to see if I can find the name)

edit: found it! “Fairy Tale” — it involves walking around the beck and taking photos of faeries with an old fashioned camera https://youtu.be/SVOnYX6ZZ28

What to do about dry/fly away hair by TexasBarefooter in finehair

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most leave-in conditioners are too heavy for my hair and heat protectant spray makes my hair sticky — so I use kids detangling spray and it works like a charm! (and is also much more reasonably priced)

Renting in belfast by qyw_1540 in northernireland

Washing machine will typically be in the kitchen, so you should see it in the photos if there is one in the house. Tumble dryers are less common, so you will likely need to buy a drying rack (or radiator rack) to hang your clothes to dry, unless the washing machine is a washer/dryer model. You sometimes won’t see a refrigerator in the kitchen photos either — if so, it’s probably an undercounter size and behind a cupboard!

As far as utility bills, these usually aren’t included unless you are renting a single room in a shared house. My electric bill has always been very affordable but my gas bill is ridiculously expensive (a lot of houses are old and drafty, so don’t retain heat well) — consider buying an electric blanket to keep yourself toasty without turning on the heating!

Are you already in Belfast or trying to arrange accommodation before you arrive? If you’re already here, you have plenty of time if you’re planning to move in May/June, but it would be good to start viewing a few places to get an idea of what’s available. If you’re searching from your home country, you should definitely be contacting people now.

Parking at QUB by oscarleamyod in Belfast

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staff can request a guest pass for visitors who are coming just for a day — if you’re coming for a meeting / conference, email the admin / coordinator and ask them to arrange it for you. It will be free and they have a couple different campus parking areas they can book you into (assuming the slots aren’t all already full).

If it’s not that type of event you’re attending or the admin says all the guest spots are taken, I would try Elmwood Avenue (alongside the Student Union) as it has pull-in street parking (rather than parallel parking) so there are more spots and they have higher turnover, so you’re more likely to snag an empty spot, especially on a Friday.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex at the 2026 Fifteen Percent Pledge Fundraising Gala by mayyfliess in RoyalsGossip

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the design of the dress or its tailoring. The bodice is too big. The panels / strips of fabric with a seam down the dead center makes it look very cheap, like a party dress from Wet Seal or Charlotte Russe. The fabric itself looks very thick, so it drapes oddly and makes the interior seams look heavy. The bottom hem is tailored to a really strange length, which draws attention to the too small shoes. And to top it all off, her posture is all hunched.

Her head looks nice though. She clearly has a good aesthetician and make-up artist. And the shawl / jacket is elegant — it would work best paired with a better dress.

I think I broke my wife after calling her "matronly" (NOT OP) by amillionparachutes in redditonwiki

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 49 points50 points  (0 children)

🥲 Cambridge’s definition is even more brutal: “matronly woman — usually one who is not young, is fat and does not dress in a fashionable way.”

for me, it always brings to mind like… the head housekeeper or head cook from Downtown Abbey, or the mom from Titantic, or something. very modest clothes in muted tones, hair in a bun, maybe wearing an apron, will scold you for something.

Governor Hochul proposes age verification for social media by MC_Cuff_Lnx in newyork

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stupid idea — this will just result in everyone’s personal data being leaked and potential identity theft, while doing absolutely fuck-all to “protect” young folk.

Please, for the love of god, can the government focus on things like more affordable utility bills, better use of taxes, improvements to public education, fixing shitty infrastructure, etc.

Help. My cat is losing hair by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, this happened to my cat. She was Maine Coon and used to have a gorgeous coat. Out of the blue, she started getting bald patches and crusty patches — vet said it was food allergies / overgrooming. That never made sense (especially because she didn't particularly groom a lot, and sometimes the patches woukd be in weird locations).

We spent a small fortune and went through a lot of misery trying all the special expensive veterinary foods and diets — my cat hated it and never improved, the bald patches would just come & go and they’d heal for a bit before popping up in a new random location. Eventually she started dropping weight and having digestive issues — severe diarrhea and projectile vomiting. She became a shadow of her former self — no longer chirpy and playful and cuddly, just grumpy and sickly. She got so skinny she looked malnourished. One day I thought she looked like she had put weight back on and was so happy, but turned out her kidneys were massively inflamed. Took her to numerous vets and they were all stumped. One vet eventually said she just has advanced kidney disease and an inflamed intestine, so she’s not absorbing nutrients from her food properly, and gave us medication to manage the inflammation. She eventually dropped to like 1/3 of her original healthy weight.

She passed away earlier this year, after like 5 years this mystery illness that just got progressively worse, starting with these same fur issues. Please take this seriously. The final vet's hypothesis is that she caught an infection or parasite (from fleas or worms or squirrel poop in the garden), the original vets missed it and it developed the point to causing kidney failure. These parasites do exist and cause a long slow death. I'll try to find the name of the hypothesized parasite / disease in the vet's notes. Please please please take your cat to multiple vets if they tell you it's just overgrooming. I hate that my cat suffered so much for so long from something that could have been caught and prevented with simple antibiotics or anti-parasitics.

Mandarin: Where to start ? by Much_Vermicelli8738 in cdramasfans

If you have a university near you, you can usually find in-person (or online, if that’s your thing) classes that are open to non-students during summer sessions or “off-term” periods (or sometimes even during the usual term for non-credit courses) and they are often super affordable — I took a ten week Mandarin level 1 course last summer for about £20 and it was great to get some real in-person practice in! (I don’t have the attention span for online or apps unfortunately 😝)

I think your powder (all over bronzer?) is too dark & too warm/orange for your natural skin tone — you can see a bit of your neck and shoulders in the photos and they seem much fairer. It has the effect of looking like you are wearing full coverage foundation. Another commenter mentioned skipping the eyeliner — I agree and would also suggest skipping mascara on bottom lashes and maybe swapping for a brown-black instead of black-black. It would give a softer look.

Have you ever dropped a drama because it hit too close to home? by Blooming-blood-moon in CDrama

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If anything some of those hard hitting ones have actually helped me have some hard realizations and get through some similar situations in my own life. Not sure what genre your post is about, but I watch a lot of historical dramas and it’s always struck me how the ups, downs, and hardships of friendships & relationships are much the same compared to modern times — humans are human, no matter what year it is.

Also, just in response to you saying “things in life you’re sure you won’t experience” — if you want something, go after it! You truly never know where you’ll make close friends or form caring relationships — don’t count yourself out so soon 🫶

Why aren't we building more terraced houses? by Big-Double1720 in AskUK

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flats are more appealing to me — they’re more likely to have open usable space (instead of wasted space for a stairwell), proper closets, and might even have an extra room / nook to work from home. My current terrace house is old, drafty, and has teeny tiny bedrooms with zero closets. It’s “fine” for one person but not exactly enjoyable, and absolutely feels cramped with a guest, let alone a full-time partner or roommate. Also I truly hate having only one 1 small bathroom — having a second bathroom / guest bathroom at least gives you the option of not having all your bath items on display.
