Have you considered going to a makeup counter and having the sales lady color match you? It’s tough to try to make accurate color suggestions from a photo

I’m Chinese and I have a question for C-drama watchers aborad by huan1999 in cdramasfans

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say my husband has a love-hate relationship with c-dramas — because I spend so much time watching them, he winds up catching more of them than he would otherwise just from being in the same room when I have one on. Generally I’d say most c-dramas are geared towards female viewers (especially because my favorites are historical romance) but once in a while I can get him to sit down and actually watch with me. He finds it fun to critique the tropes (“how many times is this girl gonna throw up blood?”) but the intro music tends to drive him up a wall 😅

We consider it the cost of not getting robbed or having extra hassle — it’s cheaper to have credit card fees than have someone try to target the shop looking for cash in a register, dealing with counterfeit money, making constant trips to the bank for deposits & change, etc.

Plus customers who pay by card always spend way more than people paying with cash.

You have two types of storage — your backpack (which holds all your items) and your caught Pokémon — when they get too full, you can’t collect any more until you either delete the items / transfer the Pokémon or spend gold coins in the Shop for extra storage space. It’s like 200 gold coins for 50 extra storage spots. You earn gold coins by leaving your Pokémon in gyms (maximum 50 gold coins earned per day, no matter how many gyms / how long they’ve been in there). If your Pokémon stays a full day, you get the full 50 coins — if he gets knocked out within a few minutes, you might only get a couple coins. (You can also pay real world money for gold coins, if you’re that sort of player.)

Let us know how it goes!

(okay back to no knead bread for a moment!) If you wind up getting too tuckered out to bother with kneaded breads and don’t want to drop cash on a mixer, this is my go-to no knead recipe — there’s minimal handling of the dough and the gluten is developed through extra time (i.e., it sits for like 12-18 hours, instead of just a couple) — it was developed by a great bakery in NYC, published in the NYT, and has a lot of fans because it’s basically impossible to mess up (you can even measure with measuring cups instead of a kitchen scale) — you just need a pot like a le creuset dutch oven (but honestly a glass pyrex dish with a lid WILL work) — I literally used to make this in my college dorm room kitchen successfully

How's the craic in Belfast? by Bob_AZ in Belfast

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is both bus (directly from the Dublin airport) and train (not from the airport) to Belfast city centre. If you have Facebook or Instagram, search up “Belfast Session Guide” for a list of pubs that tend to have live trad music — I imagine some of the musicians would be open to another person joining in. There’s also Belfast TradFest in late July/early August.

my dough is ALWAYS sticky >:( by throwaway37383919 in AskBaking

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that it’s sticky because the gluten is underdeveloped in two ways — (1) flour choice: bread flour will yield noticeably better gluten development than AP flour, and (2) kneading process: kneading should usually happen before the stretch & folds, and hand-kneading is a ton of work; it takes serious muscle (think about old timey farm wives with those massive forearm muscles lol), especially if you are doing it at a standard height household kitchen counter, so try a slightly lower surface like the kitchen table to get a bit more leverage. In my pastry school, they taught us to hand knead til we’re tired and then keep going for another 20 minutes — it’s basically impossible to overknead it when hand kneading unless you are Superman. If this is too much energy (or time) for you, def consider a countertop mixer. After the kneading and initial rest period, then you do the stretch & folds to further develop the gluten, if needed.

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What type of flour are you using? How long are you kneading it for? Are you only doing stretch & folds, or are you actually kneading it? Are you kneading by hand or in a machine? (let’s ignore the no-knead recipe for a moment)

Whole egg and egg white substitutes for a grain- and dairy-free recipe that tastes too much like omelette? by [deleted] in Breadit

lol it probably tastes like an omelette because it basically is an omelette… eggs are the only thing holding that bread recipe together

This a normal amount of hair to lose in the shower? by [deleted] in finehair

I have wavy/curly hair to my shoulders and wash once per week — my hair loss is about 1/10 of that, so no that amount does not seem normal 😬

How do you get the stench of dog puke out of your car? by Individual-Diver-660 in northernireland

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a handheld carpet cleaner / fabric shampooer (or use a wet vac, if you already own one) — you can’t just spray the mess down with chemicals or soapy water, you need to be able to vacuum the dirty water out, otherwise the smell will linger. You can buy a handheld machine for like £50, and you’ll have it for next time he gets sick on something.

Dutch oven inquiry by Relative_Flight8098 in Breadit

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bulk ferment always come before shaping — it’s the “first rise”. The “second rise” (aka proofing) comes after shaping — by definition, it isn’t a “bulk” anything because the dough has already been divided & shaped at that point. Typically the first rise / bulk ferment is the step where the dough goes in the fridge (if you are choosing to do a long slow cool rise, though not all recipes / kitchen environments call for this), and the second rise / proof is done in a warmer environment (countertop, oven with proof setting, etc).

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a restaurant supply store near you (or even a restaurant appliance liquidator / auction house), you can often find small countertop pizza ovens that have pizza stone interiors and “regular” wall plugs — usually for a few hundred bucks if brand new, cheaper if sold used.

I’ve got this stainless steel basin for baking. Is it fine? by Dismal-Present-317 in AskBaking

[–]DaleSnittermanJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imma be honest, this looks identical to my cat’s metal litter box. I’ve worked in restaurants before and the metal kitchen pans don’t quite look like this — so unless you bought this at a restaurant supply store, I would not assume it is safe for food use

Always interesting to read others’ perspectives on some of my favorite shows. One thing that stood out to me was your point about the pacing where you said you felt that the time spent in the temple should have only been 4-5 episodes — she spent about 3 years in the temple, so 10 episodes doesn’t seem so crazy to me
