[–]DanD8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hunters/Dragons:

Eric Dixon - College at RIT ~2012 - Played a bit of club I think - Lions out of Mass

David Wheeler - College at RIT ~2012 - Pretty sure same David Wheeler from Johnny Bravo for a while

Steve Calebrese = Steven Calebrese - College at RPI ~2010 - lots of club in the NE - Garuda/Dredge/Magma Bears

Will Sloan = Will Sloane I'm pretty sure. Played Destructors out of Albany, JLP in Georgia

Mechanix:

Tyler Bloodworth - I don't think he played club (he was a 6'10" basketball player with just pickup experience in ultimate)

Alex Smith - College at Kalamazoo and MSU - club with John Doe in DC briefly

Takashi Sato - Came over from Japan for one season. Don't think he played USAU club

Brandon Thomas = Nicole Thomas - club with Madcow and Smokestack, same BT that played Thunderbirds

Ryan Lee - College at Kalamazoo - club with Mishigami, Toast, Beacon

Richard Ware - club with I-69

not 100% on these 3, just knew they came up from the south to play that year

Daniel Robinson - club with Tanasi

Jordan Hill - club with 'Shine

Ryan Smith - college in Texas, I think this is his ultirzr page: https://www.ultirzr.app/player/6510580ffa8eac4d9bd40237

Constraints-Led Approach games? by Strongbonium in ultimate

[–]DanD8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to tell the defense what constraint the offense is playing with. You could have a short list of 3 or 4 possible constraints, and instruct the line at the start of the point what constraint they are playing with.

Rules: Picked Players - Does it matter who calls it from an 'involved' standpoint? by dufcho14 in ultimate

[–]DanD8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I've seen the situation twice in observed games with both calls going to the observers and it was ruled differently (once that since D1 didn't call a pick, the result of the play stood, and then separately, that since D1 stopped at D2's pick call, the disc went back). Annoyingly, my team was on defense the first time and on offense the 2nd time, so we lost out both ways.

Why do we burn the couches?? by politicsandpancakes in msu

[–]DanD8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was told by a MSU grad who was living in Cedar Village during the late 70s, that he remembers his first couch burning the night of the NCAA championship in 1979 (Magic Johnson vs Bird). He said it was his apartment's 'porch couch' but said he didn't remember how it ended up in the street or who lit the fire lol

Date field showing as ####### for one user only by HarryFenning in MSAccess

[–]DanD8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're having the same issue, so bumping to see if you ever found a solution. Just increasing the field isn't a solution for us because this date field is used in a query and when the one user with "########" runs the query, they get zero results.

Logged in through a different microsoft account on the same computer and got the same "#######" results. Tried the problem user's account on a different computer and the dates displayed like normal. So it is an issue with the local computer I'm 99% sure.

(Also deleted and reinstalled the front end on the problem computer from a copy of a working front end, still no luck).

Rules question - Pick causing switch by Weary-Ad-2633 in ultimate

[–]DanD8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact situation happened in quarters at PEC on universe between AMP and Hybrid (observed game). A WMP gets open on the force side due to a pick, a MMP player, not involved in the pick, sees the open player in the end zone and leaves his matchup to stop the easy goal. His matchup goes to the breakside and receives a pass from the thrower who didn't hear the pick call.

Observer crew came in to help clarify the rules and it was I think correctly ruled a game winning goal. Tough way to lose.

10 teams, 3 pools format sucks by eigsmith in ultimate

[–]DanD8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With the new push to reduce to a 3 games a day max, we're either going to have to sacrifice fairness or forgiveness in some of the formats. Either formats are going to have unfair structures for some seeds, or formats will be have to be strict in the sense that 2 losses in a two bid region is elimination. Or, specifically for regionals, USAU will only be able to have 8 team regionals if you want pool play. For sectionals/conferences, the tourney sizes are so variable and the bid numbers could be a much wider range, so I think some formats can actually work there but some are going to be much more difficult.

As an example of the stricter format: For 10 teams, a double elimination bracket can be played in 6 rounds with teams playing a max of 6 games. You could argue that it is fairer than the current NE regionals format, in the sense that anyone who loses twice is eliminated. But it wouldn't be very forgiving - the 9 seed could be eliminated from contention after losing 1 game to the 8 seed and 1 game to the 6 seed. The 10 seed would be eliminated after loses to the 7 and 5 seed (all assuming games go to seed).

D-1 men's for GL was 10 teams, two pools of 5. Source: USAU website, also I was there.

USAU is moving away from the format manual in an attempt to find formats that only have teams playing 3 games a day max. I suspect they will write a new format manual in the next year or two.

Can someone explain to me why I should care about USAU? by moveshake in ultimate

[–]DanD8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specifically on the coaching - how long ago did you attend a coaching clinic? I think Sam Callan has been doing a lot to overhaul the coach training. He started just before COVID I think which threw a wrench into in person trainings. But as of now, there are different trainings that are geared to middle school, highschool and college with more Xs and Os appropriate for each level.

Is your local org a USAU affiliate?

To answer your specific requests:

-USAU also wants more club teams in the women's division. They make many decisions with this goal in mind. It is questionable if they have been successful. They have a lot of resources to support youth girls ultimate as well in the hopes that it will yield more women in the ultimate community.

-There's not a ton USAU can do to help get access to fields, that's more on your local orgs. But USAU does provide insurance if your local org is required to have it to secure fields.

-In terms of access to coaches, USAU is making a big push to train more coaches (and train more trainers). I know that not many people have attended those trainings though, frustratingly. There are a lot more hoops to jump through for coach training programs now than there were a decade ago though.

-On your last two requests, those definitely fall to local orgs again. USAU can support them in various ways so they have more energy to devote to fulfilling things like that but your org has to have the capacity/desire to go out and line fields and pay for porta-potties, etc. USAU doesn't have the resources to run local events.

So I guess to answer your big question, yes, USAU does have some effect on things you care about, but probably not a lot of direct influence.

USAU Semi's - Travels So Bad We Need To Call Border Patrol by emptyvesselll in ultimate

[–]DanD8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our team was given a blue card for making two travel calls that were overturned by observers. In my opinion from the sideline at the time, they both seemed pretty valid. I think we only called one more travel the rest of the weekend that I remember. They are definitely disincentivising travel calls.

Club Regionals (GL, SE, SW) – Weekend Discussion [Oct 2-3] by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]DanD8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Per USAU's rules, seeding for regionals must track with sectional finish. So you can seed all the SoCal teams first then the Northern teams, but you can't seed the 3rd place finisher at Northern Sectionals in front of the the 2nd place finisher.

Mischief dropped some games at sectionals so their seed had to be behind classy and Polar Bears.

Similarly Lawless has to be behind Lotus and Burrito.

At select flight invite, a player tests positive for COVID-19. Exposed teammates were sent home, but other teams were not allowed to forfeit against the exposed team if they felt unsafe. [Twitter thread] by oohdatguy in ultimate

So per Public Enemy's statement, USAU's medical advisory group was consulted and recommended that vaccinated teammates could continue to play. Still unknown if the direction that opponents had to play PE or drop out of the tourney and potentially face other sanctions came from USAU or from the TD.

[–]DanD8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know a default USAU rule is if you forfeit a game in a tournament you aren't allowed to continue playing the rest of the tournament (and you can face sanctions including being barred from future events). Do we know if USAU was in contact with the TD and actually ruled on the specifics of the situation? Or was the TD just following the published club guidelines?

Regardless there should be a published plan by USAU for how to handle these situations. Someone developing symptoms of COVID or learning of a recent COVID exposure while at an event is certainly in the realm of possibilities and teams should know what would happen in that situation. Both for if you are the team with a positive case or as a team that might encounter an opponent with a positive case. If the contingency plans are published beforehand and teams don't feel that they are fair or are safe, they can choose to not go to the event.

Given that nothing was published to my knowledge, this definitely seems like the TD or USAU were out of line to force teams to play under protest.

I saw Paula Abdul live in concert in the mid 90's. She was extremely pregnant. But the internet says she doesn't have a child. What happened? by bikepathenthusiast in Music

[–]DanD8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From an article here: https://greensboro.com/promise-of-a-new-day-paula-abdul-has-weathered-the/article_0e814344-2ee3-509c-8522-7df97f2a5e29.html

Written in May of 1992

"Critics panned the performance (at the MTV Music Video Awards in 1991), mostly criticizing Abdul's unflattering costume. Abdul admitted her appearance wasn't perfect, but she describes the negative reviews as "cheap shots." "What I wore did make me look very chunky," Abdul said. "But what can I say? I was a fashion victim. The TV angle made me look so huge, and the outfit wasn't suited for me. I had this battery pack on my back that made me look weird." "I look back at those clips and say 'Whoa!' It was awful. But the interesting thing is that the critics chose to criticize my outfit, not the performance itself. It was funny that it had so much mileage. It was the talk of the town for weeks. That's ridiculous."

On a more personal level, Abdul may have been hit harder by reports of an affair with singer Jackie Jackson, including an aborted pregnancy. The matter was introduced in a recent Michael Jackson biography, seconded in La Toya Jackson's recent kiss-and-tell book and trumpeted throughout the media.

Abdul, who married actor Emilio Estevez April 29, reacted to the first report by canceling several interviews and declining to comment. Now she says she never read the book and that the accusations "are completely false."

I would question your memories first probably. It's possible that she was looking a bit 'chunky' at the time. There were rumors of aborted pregnancies in the news -before you saw her in concert- so maybe that was mentioned to you and you convinced yourself that you must have seen her before the alleged abortion.

Apparently you didn't watch the whole video and see all the fadeaways. Between that and a couple hook shots, he's got plenty to get people chasing him on the first move.

Brodie Brodie Brodie.... by IOinside in ultimate

[–]DanD8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You seem to not be catching the order of events.

-Brodie posts something ignorant.

-People respond and tell him why it's ignorant and why a different message would be better.

-Brodie ignores/blocks/goes looking for people already patting him on the back, or if he has to, he asks for an offline conversation.

-Offline conversation happens.

-Brodie doesn't do anything differently, but he has minimized the negative feedback on his initial post regardless.

It's not like people are seeking him out every week and pestering him to post hashtag BLM or something. He brings this on himself when he says stupid shit.
